Unit 10 Peace

by Stephen Bruce

© Stephen Bruce 2015 General Introduction This unit forms part of a scheme of work for art designed to support 2 schools wanting to develop art lessons based on the National Societies 15 Christian values that many Church of Schools have adopted.

The units in this scheme have been written by Stephen Bruce of Chalice Arts UK. Stephen is a art educational consultant and former head teacher.

This scheme of work provides an opportunity for pupils to engage in making art and at the same time reinforcing the core Christian values in a visual way. Schools can adapt the unit for different year groups as they see fit. It could be used as a whole school unit or given to a particular year group or varied year to year in rotation.

Chalice Arts UK provides a variety of art projects for schools. More information about the author and his work can be found at: www.chaliceartsuk.co.uk 3 Displaying pupil’s artwork linked to the core values is a very powerful way for schools to ensure they are prominent and in constant focus.

More information about the National Societies values for schools can be found at the following website:

http://www.christianvalues4schools.co.uk Art Activity 1 – Angel of Peace 4 Example Learning Objectives • To develop a painting based on the theme of an Angel of Peace inspired by the work of Gustav Klimt. • To use acrylic paint or water colour paint to develop concepts of pattern and shape and skills of colour mixing and detailed brush control. • To learn the use stencils to apply gold paint to produce a border design.

Resources • PowerPoint slides of various Angels of Peace particularly by Adrian Jones who designed the sculpture. • Photographs of paintings by Stephen Bruce and Gustav Klimt. • Water colour paper or canvas board, acrylic paints/ or other water colour paints, size 4 brushes, palettes, water pots, table coverings, art aprons, pencils. 5 Key Points of the Teaching Sequence

• Introduce the theme through looking at the sculpture of Adrian Jones. • Show the example painting by Stephen Bruce and discuss the decoration being influenced by the artist Gustav Klimt. Show examples of his work and discuss the patterns etc. • Teacher to model outline of how to compose the Angel of Peace. Simple shapes – see photocopy resource. • Using the photocopy resources children compose their drawings and begin painting. • Gold paint is used to complete the work and highlight details to make the work special. • A stencil is used to create the border design using gold paint. This is done under the supervision of an assisting adult who can help hold the stencil in place for the children. • Alternatively children can invent their own individual borders. 6 • Carry out learning checks/ mini plenary at various points to check pupils are making progress and to highlight interesting work and ideas and use of paint. More discussion and reference to the work of Klimt can take place to achieve interesting patterns.

You could also consider using sketch books to work out initial ideas using pencil drawing and also for making notes about the properties and safe use of acrylic paint and colour mixing examples. Children might like to collect their own examples of Klimt patterns or sculpture with the theme of the Angel of Peace. Example Learning Objectives • To compose and draw from observation using line, learning the term still-life. (Composition, position and size) • To develop skills in using acrylic or water colour paint, developing colour mixing skills and improving brush control e.g. mixing tones of green, tones of white etc. • To learn that objects in art can hold symbolic meaning e.g. a flower or colour representing peace.

Resources • Canvas boards or water colour paper, acrylic or water colour paints, size 4 brushes, palettes, water pots, table coverings, art aprons, pencils. • Still-life with a peace lily or a vase of lilies or one or two lily heads for close up drawings. Key Points of the Teaching Sequence 24 • Look at examples of drawings ar paintings of lilies. Use Georgia O’keeffe or other artists. • Discus lily being a flower of peace – show a peace lily. • Introduce the still-life the children will draw, pointing out the size and position of the flowers and leaves. • Discuss the composition and model on a sheet of paper how to compose the work. A large cut out window (e.g. from a sheet of sugar paper) placed over the still-life so that it is framed will help children compose their work. • Make a drawing on the canvas board or water colour paper. • Teach/ model the use of acrylic paint (or water colour if used), its properties and discuss colour mixing. Teach about the safe use of this paint – washing brushes, wearing art aprons and taking care not to get paint on sleeves etc. • Paint the still-life using the acrylic paints. • If you are using poster or powder paint then teach/ model the use of these. 25 • Use frequent reminders about holding paint brushes in pencil grip to help improve brush control. • Occasionally stop the class to share children’s work and demonstrate key skills e.g. a child’s work with good composition or use of colour mixing etc.

You might use sketch books to do pencil sketches of lilies or to collect examples of different artist’s work. Paintings of lilies are a popular artistic theme and many examples can be found on the internet. Paintings of lilies by Giorgia O’Keeffe 26
