Dull morning & coldish. Went usual round C.H. Saw no one. Times New Year honours. Aird made a baronet, Lord Romer a G.C.B, only ones I knew. Nothing in any letters. No congratulations, no nothing. Busy all morning. Weeded out things that are useless from cupboards etc. Miss Gill came. Had fitted the small Hare camera ready for use. Lunch. After from 2.0 to 3.45 or 4.0 developed about 30 plates taken of Miss Hall in French Republic dress on Saty Decr 22nd. Burnt seven or eight old painting frames in room. Wednesday January 2 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.15am. Walk round Campden Hill. After in morning got small camera ready. Lunch. At 2.15 went by Met.Rly to call on Meagher 172 Pentonville Road. If horrible when Du Maurier knew it what of it now. Walked past Claremont Square & Mrs Sheehy's. Saw funeral horses at show. Then thro' Exmouth St & on to the Foundlings. Called at a shop & bought a table. Talkative man. Then strolled to Garrick. Tea. Saw Lawrence Bradbury. Tips: Cole 5/6, C.C 10/s, waiter 10/s, sergeant 10/s & 2/6 cabman, 2/6 Wilkins. Strolled to Punch dinner. Called Whistlers & also saw Lewis the bronze man. Sir Wm A, O.S, R.L, A à B, J.T, self, F.C.B, A.G, H.W.L, B.P, L.B, & new man, Raven Hill, for 1st time. Affecting evening. Tenniel made speech, & W.A & F.C.B. Very touching. No sort of reference whatever to me. Left with Tenniel at 11.0 by cab & bus. Home 11.45. Roy just came in from Midge's. Sat & read Westminster. Bed at 12.45. Cold & raw. Miserable. (Red ink: Tenniel's last Punch dinner. Affecting speech.) Thursday January 3 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.25. Dull foggy morning. Cold. Went for walk C.H. After Roy getting off for Pyt House. Skemed subject of Kitchener & John Bull. Stace came 11.45. Photod him Otley & self. M went to Mr Rose's to see Lord Robert's entry into London. After came foggy & dark. Extreme difficulty in getting a print of phos. Had to give up at 3.30. Mr Meagher called. Also man from Elliot & Fry's. Could not get a print of self. Up in room & worked on 1st central official cartoon from 4.30 to 8.15 when M & self dined quietly. Roy out at Mite's. Bed tired after snooze. (Red ink: Lord Roberts enters London. At work on 1st official cartoon. Great difficulties as to light.) (Cutting glued in: Death of Alexander Keith.) Friday January 4 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.15. Out for usual walk. Pitch dark all day. Impossible to enlarge or do anything so went on to work. Mr Blair called at 12.30am. M & Miss Gill. After went on & finished at 9.15. M, Roy, Miss Gill & self dined after. Not very tired. Smoke & snooze. (Red ink: Worked & finished first official cartoon. Great difficulty as to light. Very dark. My 56th birthday.) (Cutting glued in: Court Circular.) 2 LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1901 Saturday January 5 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.15. Did not go out. Printed some blues in morning. Finer. M had mislaid Academy ticket for Old Masters. Lunched at home & left after & walked up Park. Bus to Garrick, rear. On after to the Garrick Theatre. Sat next M & saw a children's play, Strewelpeter. Grossmith Junr & Kitty Loftus. Mr Douglas & Shorter & his wife in theatre. Out. Put M in carriage & to Athenaeum. Wrote letters & tea. Then after home by bus. Roy out. He dined with Mr Blair & went to Mrs Dane's Defence. M & self had quiet evening & rest after. Very cold at night. (Red ink: M & self went to matinée of Strewelpeter at Garrick Theatre.) (Cuttings glued in: Deaths of Duncan Graham; Alfred Jackson; James Stern.) Sunday January 6 Stafford Terrace. Up at 9.0. Bitterly cold east wind. Out for walk. Gave old woman 6d. Back & all morning printing & sorting. At 12.30 took M up Row, going by bus to Hyde Park Corner and walking home. Met Mr Blair. Blizzard of east wind. M & feather. On reaching home saw dear Mite in cab. Lunch after walked at 3.0pm to the Athenaeum. Wrote letters in room below until 5.45. Cornered by Canon Harford about the Queen's anthem. Up in drawing room & again wrote letters till 7.0pm when left & home by bus. Dressed. Mr & Mrs Isadore Spielmann dined, Maud & Lennie & Roy. Lennie had been delighted by his visit to Pyt. Bed at 12.45 after reading. M felt the cold very much. (Red ink: Mr & Mrs Spielmann, Maud & Lennie dined.) Monday January 7 Stafford Terrace. Up 8.15am. Out for walk. Snow on ground & sleety snow. Met young Manley & sister. Gave Roy £9.0.0. He left for City & to go to Haywards Heath with Lennie. Frightfully cold all day. Put things in order etc. Mended chest of drawers etc. Packed bags. 2 men came at 4.0pm from the Daily Mail to interview me. Stayed until 6.0pm. Mr Howard delivered small satinwood table in the morning room, 2 vases & a small figure, £14.0.0. Roy back at 6.45. Did not go to Haywards Heath. M & self dined quite quietly. Roy back from dining with Mite at 11.45. Bed. Very cold & threatened snow. (Red ink: Interviewed for 'Daily Mail'. Satinwood table came for morning room.) (Cuttings glued in: Court Circular. Obituary of Lord Leconfield.) 3 LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1901 Tuesday January 8 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.20. Very tired. Down. Finished packing. Roy off to City. Frightfully cold & snow. Goodbye to M & left in cart 1.0am. Crocodile bag not down. Flurry. Great difficulties in driving to St Pancras. Blocked roads. Got to station. Left 12.5. Down with a Mr Fitzgerald who had been devil to Frank Lockwood. He shared my lunch cheerfully. Omnibus at station. At Bylaugh at 5.0pm. Tea. After wrote letters. 16 at dinner, Mr & Mrs Bulteel etc. Took Miss Moore. Boy playing organ & piano with mechanical instrument. Looked at Pannell's book after. Bed at 11.50. Very cold. Mr & Mrs Loame, Mr & Mrs Bulteel, Miss Moore, Miss Merriman, Miss D'Arcy, Billy, Mr Hand, Mr Fitzgerald, Captain James, Mr & Mrs D'Arcy, self. (Red ink across page: Went down to Bylaugh Park to shoot in the snow.) (Cutting glued in: Court Circular.) Wednesday January 9 Bylaugh Park, East Dereham. Up at 7.45. Breakfast 8.30. Down. Great pain in loins. After started 9.30pm. 7 guns, drove 6 miles. Lovely day. Slight snow but after warmer. Good lunch. Best day ever had. Got 47 pheasants, 1 hare, 1 duck, 1 partridge, 50 in all. Left off at 4.0 & drive home. Tea. Wrote letters from 5.0 to 7.15 & diary. Took Miss Merriman in to dinner after. Played 100 up with Mr Hand. Won. 1st cartoon of mine in 'Punch'. Lost 100 game with Mr Bulteel. Bed at 11.45pm. (Red ink: Best day's shoot at Bylaugh Park ever had. (Cuttings glued in: Death of Alan Charteris, Jany 11; notice of LS's 1st cartoon in Punch. W G, Jany 9, 1901.) Thursday January 10 Bylaugh Park, East Dereham. Up 8.0. Breakfast 9.0am. Wore covert suit. Many letters. Drove to Foxley Wood. Mr Marriott, Mr Head, Captain James, Mr Fitzgerald, D'Arcy, self, Owen, Billy. Got 29 pheasants & 14 rabbits. 43 head. Not lucky in being placed. Ladies to lunch. Sat between Miss Moore & Miss Merriman. Accounts of self in Daily Mail & Daily Graphic & last night's Westminster Gazette. Lovely sunset. Rich orange. Left off at 4.20 & home 4.45. Tea up in room & for 2 hours writing letters. Dressed. Down for dinner. "Who dat a knockin at de door?" Took Mrs Loamas in. Long talk. 2 games of billiards after with Mr Head. Lost both. Got to 99 in the first. Billy marking. Bed at 11.45. Took 2 C.L.L.P. Many notices in papers on my cartoon etc etc.
