As a result, history represents the values, ideologies, and most importantly for this dissertation, the remembrances of the victorious. Their remembrances never remain ethereal or disembodied; they become the object lessons about the past for those living in the present. And these object lessons, the lessons of history, become the narratives and locations that transmit a nation’s idealized values and origin stories. It is in this confluence of remembrances, object lessons, values and origin stories that this dissertation examines in the Alamo. The Alamo represents a consummate site of memory for the United States. As a cultural narrative it persists from a mid-nineteenth century battlefield through the present day as a cinematic narrative. The Alamo is one of the historical watershed moments of the Westward expansion. However, the tales of the victors (ironically, in this case, the victors at the Alamo are the Euro- Americans who died in the battle) transmit values, lessons and stories steeped in narratives of denial.

    Battle of the Alamo 1 Battle of the Alamo The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas). All but two of the Texian defenders were killed. Santa Anna's perceived cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians—both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States—to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution. Several months prior, Texians had driven all Mexican troops out of Mexican Texas. Approximately 100 Texians were then garrisoned at the Alamo. The Texian force grew slightly with the arrival of reinforcements led by eventual Alamo co-commanders James Bowie and William B. Travis. On February 23, approximately 1,500 Mexican troops marched into San Antonio de Béxar as the first step in a campaign to re-take Texas. For the next 12 days the two armies engaged in several skirmishes with minimal casualties. Aware that his garrison could not withstand an attack by such a large force, Travis wrote multiple letters pleading for more men and supplies, but fewer than 100 reinforcements arrived. In the early morning hours of March 6, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo. After repulsing two attacks, Texians were unable to fend off a third attack.

Two men dominated the development of the Mexican oil industry from 1900 to 1914, Edward Doheny and Weetman Pearson.- Doheny was an Irish-Ameri- can and Pearson became an English lord but both realized the vast po¬ tential of Mexico's oil and overcame many obstacles to successfully exploit it. During a tumultuous time of political and social uphea¬ val, the foreign oil companies created an extensive industrial complex in Mexico centered in the Tampico region. The year was 1840 and the old mission still lay in ruins. Nevertheless, already San Antonio de Béxar’s leading tourist attraction, its cold stones possessed the ability to inspire. A citizen of the United States and a Presbyterian minister, Lawrence was touring the Republic of Texas gathering materiel for an emigrant’s guide he was planning to write. What he had already seen of that fledgling nation impressed him mightily. “It contains,” he insisted, “more productive and valuable land than any other country of similar extent in the known world.” Yet, nothing he had previously experienced had prepared him for the sensation of reverence and awe that the Alamo stimulated. Clearly moved, he waxed elegiac: Will not in future days Bexar be classic ground? Is it not by victory and the blood of heroes, consecrated to liberty, and sacred to the fame of patriots who there repose upon the very ground they defended with their last breath and last drop of generous blood? Will Texians ever forget them? Or cease to prize the boon for which these patriots bled? Forbid it honor, virtue, patriotism. Let every Texian bosom be the monument sacred to their fame, and every Texian freeman be emulous of their virtues. Lawrence was by no means alone in expressing such sentiments. Almost before the blood dried on those shattered stones, the Alamo and its defenders entered the realm of myth and legend— and there, in large measure, it remains.1 !1 Myth and fallacy has so enshrouded every aspect of the Alamo story that it becomes difficult—not impossible, but difficult—to separate the fanciful from the factual.
