JFD’s copy, edited for the British edition, with over 30 pages showing holograph corrections. Six of these pages contain substantial additions. Contains many early, heavily corrected versions of chapters, some of which were originally submitted as independent articles for magazines. The oldest of these date back to the early 1930’s. Also includes correspondence, transcripts, miscellaneous articles, and newspaper clippings relating to coyote history and folklore. Typescript. 570 leaves. Original typescript draft. The Ben Lilly Legend. [Boston: Little, Brown, 1950]. See McVicker A13. Source Material. Approximately 750 leaves. Consists of correspondence with people who knew Ben Lilly, as well as transcriptions of letters and documents. Also includes a dozen photographs of Ben Lilly and 3 homemade knives which apparently belonged to Ben Lilly. The protective wrapping has in JFD’s handwriting: “Ben Lilly Knives from New Mexico, 1940.” Typescript. 275 leaves. Original draft, all chapters present. Heavily corrected by the author. Chapter II, “The Cowwhip,” has an attached letter from Henry Nash Smith to Bertha Dobie written on October 18, 1943. Smith is returning the typescript of the chapter to Bertha with positive reviews (JFD having left for Cambridge, England to teach). A later version of the same chapter labeled “revised” follows. Typescript. 81 leaves. Heavily corrected by the author. Consists of the additions and revisions JFD used to update his Guide to Life and Literature of the Southwest. Typescript carbon. 42 leaves. Chapter 21--”Range Life: Cowboys, Cattle, Sheep”--from the revised Guide. (An earlier draft of the introduction to this chapter can be found in the typescript above.) JFD reworked this part of the Guide more than any other. His superb collection of books about range life (now housed at the University of Texas at Austin) was reaching culmination, and this chapter reflects his knowledge and love of the subject. An important, early work which JFD later enlarged and Dorothy Sloan Books – Catalogue 10/1 (3/93) revised to create the Guide to Life and Literature of the Southwest. 10. DOBIE, J. Frank (ed.). Tone the Bell Easy. [Austin: TFLS, 1932]. Includes contributions by JFD, J. Mason Brewer, Martha Emmons, Ruth Dodson, and others. See McVicker B15. Typescript. 254 leaves. The galleys are present for the first half of the book, through Jovita Gonzalez’s article “Among My People.” Page Proofs. 167 leaves. Lacking preliminary material and JFD’s essay “Mustang Gray: Fact, Tradition and Song,” otherwise complete. JFD’s heavily corrected draft of the essay is present in the above typescript. Artwork and Illustrations. 10 (of 11) original pen and ink drawings by Tom Smith used to illustrate J. Mason Brewer’s article “Juneteenth.” These original drawings, measuring approximately 6.5 x 10 inches (17 x 25 cm.), are much larger and more detailed than the reduced versions in the book. Other than some minor creases to extremities and a paperclip rustmark in the margins of two drawings, the lot is in fine condition. Also included are 44 leaves of hand- sketched musical notation that were used throughout the book for illustrations. Miscellaneous. Small lot of four letters to JFD, all dated 1932, from Louise Girvan, Henry Meyer, ? Rourke, and Walter R. Smith praising the book. 11. [POTTER, Jack]. The typescript is an assemblage of individual articles submitted by the contributors with the addition of an introduction and notes. 31 of the 37 stories that appear in the book are present. There are moderate editorial corrections throughout by JFD and another person (probably Boatright or Ransom). Corrections by the author of each article are also present in varying degrees. Contains JFD’s editorial corrections throughout. The second half of the galley proof exists in an unrevised and revised version. Also included is the following correspondence: 14 typed letters signed and one autograph letter signed from Carl Hertzog to JFD dated between June 3 and October 5, 1942, accompanied by 5 typed carbons of JFD’s letters to Hertzog.
