Table I shows the reaches which have failed their quality objectives for the year to September 1993. This period has seen the number of reaches failing their quality objectives fall to a new low. Only 30 reaches failed to meet their objectives, which represents 176 km of watercourse of 4.6% of the total length of watercourses assessed. Table la shows the number of reaches which failed their quality objectives, and the corresponding percentage length of watercourses assessed, over the past 15 months. Table 2a is a matrix showing the total length of river in each class against objectives. Table 2b shows the total lengths of river meeting their quality objectives. EC Freshwater Fish Directive (78/559/EEC) A total length of 1470 km of freshwater river is designated under the EC Freshwater Fish Directive. Of this, 504 km is designated as salmonid and 966 km is designated as cyprinid. 173 sites are used to assess compliance against the water quality standards set in the directive. II sites failed to comply with the standards during the period 1 October 1992 to 30 September 1993 (see table 3). There has been a net increase of 2 sites since the last report (1 salmonid site entered the list and 3 left, whilst 5 cyprinid sites entered the list and 1 left). EC Dangerous Substances Directive (76/464/EEC) 7 sites have failed the standards as set in the EC Dangerous Substances Directive (see table 4). Two new sites (1 in the river Wandle and the other in the river Lee) have been added to the list and both these failures are for total HCH. The Tideway Table 5 shows the achievements of the 3 tideway reaches against their quality objectives and fig. 5a shows the dissolved oxygen profile for the period July - September 1993. During the period July - September 1993 there were numerous outbreaks of rain which caused storm sewage inputs into the tideway and resulted in reduced water quality, but 2 notable incidents occurred. Firstly, after heavy rain on 11 August massive amounts of storm sewage entered the tideway. The "Thames Bubbler" was deployed as a preemptive measure and as a result dissolved oxygen (DO) levels did not fall below 50% saturation. Secondly, very heavy rain occurred on 7/8 September (rainfall was greater than 30 mm in some parts of the region). This time the "Thames Bubbler” was not deployed and DO levels fell to 27%. Also during the Salmon freshet experiment come into operation. The aim of this scheme is to increase the freshwater flows entering the tideway, by reducing the amount abstracted, to assist the salmon run up the Thames. The result of this scheme was that whenever it was in operation more freshwater entered the tideway and this improved the water quality. DO levels were usually at least 60% saturation in the upper tideway. Throughout the period the middle tideway has been satisfactory. DO levels have ranged between 30 and 50% saturation as a result of the influences of storm sewage inputs and various extreme spring tide cycles. 3 sites on the tideway failed the standards as set in the Dangerous Substances Directive. There has been a net decrease of 1 site since the last report and now all of these failures are for total HCH (see table 6).
