EDUCATION . PhD, University of Notre Dame, January 2016 Dissertation: Inspired Scribes: The Formation of the and the Vocation of Ancient Jewish Scribal Scholars This dissertation examines the variant manuscripts of the book of Jeremiah in light of the practice of ancient Near Eastern scholarly scribes who were responsible for transcribing and interpreting prophetic oracles. These scribes actively participated in the process of divination, i.e. in the discernment of the deity’s will. Through techniques of “scribal prophecy”—or better, “textual divination”—these scribes shaped and expanded the meaning of prophetic oracles. These techniques of textual divination illuminate the practice of the Jewish scribes who utilized similar divinatory methods in their interpretation, adaptation, and expansion of Jeremiah. M.Div.
