This is the last issue for this year and the first for 2020. The year has simply flown past. Thank you to everyone who supports Sibrydion, in everything, as this is YOUR magazine. So thank you to: • The business advertising, which funds the whole thing, and I understand works well for all of these local businesses! Debbie Ashton, • The regular feature contributors, who give us interesting articles on Editor Wildlife (Rennie Telford) and seasonal gardening tasks and advice (Lisa Cunningham–Allsop at Camlan) • The Wordsearch (Alan Jones) – a very welcome addition. • The intrepid volunteers who help to get the magazine through letterboxes. • Our trusty hippy deliverer, Steve Parry, who has been doing drops around the coast to get our publication out to Harlech, Barmouth, Dolgellau, Machynlleth and often Bala too! • Our village rector, who always writes thought-provoking common sense articles on life (Rev Lindsay Ford) • All other volunteers, particularly who help me out in more technical ways – Malcolm Hills (Events) and Bernie Pridding, removing staples from the magnetic charging port of my computer, or similar when needed). You are all invaluable! I love you all 

Sibrydion 17 Safety alert for you and your beloved canine companions By Glyn Evans

One afternoon, recently at around 15.45, my day took a massive dive. Both of my Working Cocker Spaniels were by my side, whilst I worked on a local estate. Suddenly, they ran off to greet 3 lads, who were clearing trees. I went over to have a general chat and after a minute or two, one of the lads informed me that the dogs where eating some stuff on the bankside Bybehind Glyn me. Evans I shooed them off, thinking no more and put them back on their leads and took them to the shed before returning to work for around 20 minutes. 18 Sibrydion As all my friends know, I’ve being accused so many times of being over cautious with not allowing my dogs off the leads. So please take note that it only takes a moment for dogs to tuck in to something they shouldn’t, if it is there. They are natural scavengers. Both dogs will have urine and blood tests in 2 weeks to see if all is clear, to hopefully confirm that they have escaped any permanent organ damage We collected two very happy dogs that morning. Rice becomes toxic and deadly poisonous after a couple of days outside of a fridge. DO TAKE CARE! Supplier of Nature’s Menu and Lily’s Kitchen Pet Foods Rice is not just toxic to dogs, but to humans also. Humans can suffer permanent kidney damage from eating rice, which has been reheated. It is much safer for all concerned to throw away any left over rice, but at least it should be cooled quickly, stored in a refrigerator and only reheated once to over 79ºC. Guidance can be found online.

You will often see a Peregrine high in the sky above you on the lookout for an unwary gull or for that matter any other bird - the female, which is much larger and heavier than the male, has been known, believe it or not, to take on birds as big as Greylag Geese or even a Heron! Frosty Starts By Lisa Cunningham-Allsop – Camlan Garden Centre, Dinas Mawddwy.

December At the time of writing we’ve had quite a lot of wet weather, and the ground is pretty saturated making the last mow of the season a challenge. The weather has become much colder and by the time you read this winter will be well under way! This is the perfect time of year to plant shrubs, soft fruit bushes and trees, with nurseries only having the plants available from November. The RHS recommend that: ‘planting is best done between October and April. Container grown plants … are easier to care for if planted in autumn or winter, as they need less watering than ones planted in spring or summer. Bare-root and rootballed trees and shrubs are only available in autumn and winter. They should be planted immediately, but if this is not possible … then they can be heeled in. There are a surprising variety of native Welsh fruit trees and we will be stocking them from mid-November, as well as soft fruit bushes such as raspberries and gooseberries. When planting rhubarb spread a good dollop of well-rotted manure around as a mulch being careful not to cover the crown. This will help produce a healthy crop of fruit next year. As always it’s worth looking at the RHS website for detailed step-by-step guides for everything in the garden: www.rhs.org.uk January This is a good time to plan for the year ahead so a good excuse to stay indoors in the warm, with a diary and seed catalogues! On crisp clear dry days head outside and prepare the beds for early spring growing. The frosts will help break down rough clods of soil and also add some organic matter such as well rotted manure or home-produced

38 Sibrydion garden compost to improve the texture and richness. Don’t forget to assist our feathered friends at this hard time of year, homemade fat balls are a good indoor activity and you will be rewarded with lots of activity to watch from a warm spot inside! Be careful not to disturb potential hibernation habitats and leave the leaf mounds in place! The Woodland Trust have a comprehensive guide to our Frosty native hibernating wildlife and how you can assist them: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk We’re getting ready for Christmas at Camlan and Starts will have loads of tempting things in the garden centre and farm shop! Call ahead if you’re making a special journey to make sure we have what you need available, and if not we always do our best to order special items in, including plants. We have exciting news that our new café will be opening early next year, we’ll update you in the next diary…

You can find us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @CamlanDinas and our website is www.camlan.cymru which also has information about the café and farm shop.

A Letter of Appreciation to Share

We get a lot of positive feedback about the I love doing the Word search. As an Englishwoman, magazine, which helps to make the team feel I found the Welsh place names rather more that we are doing something right. It means a lot challenging, but I enjoyed it and completed it. to hear the positive comments from readers. It gave my 93 year old brain-box some welcome I thought I would share this as it is so exercise! complimentary to all who contribute... I also like the vicar, Lindsay Ford’s articles too, (although I am a Roman Catholic). He speaks good Dear Editor, sense. I am hard of hearing and I can no longer hear Would you please convey to all of the contributors to my own priest, when I attend mass every Sunday. Sibrydion, how much I enjoy the magazine, which I receive by post, (subscription). I find the articles most Keep up the good work and give my thanks to ALL interesting, especially the Nature Notes, which are your helpers who distribute the magazine! so informative. In issue 66, I learnt about the Lobster Moth; a species that have never heard of before. Nora C.
