An additional seven which may occur are included. Keys to subfamilies, genera and species are given. Two subfamilies and twenty-five genera are represented. A discussion of specific identification, habitat, and distribution is given where possible. The Laphria canis complex, index complex, and aeatus complex are discussed. One new species, Laphria calvescenta is described. Laphria disparella has been raised from synonymy. Machimus virginicus was removed from Asilus sensu-latu and placed in the genus Machimus.

  • Fiji Arthropods
FIJI ARTHROPODS Editors’ Preface We are pleased to present the second issue of Fiji Arthropods, a series offering rapid pub- lication and devoted to studies of terrestrial arthropods of the Fiji Group and nearby Pacific archipelagos. Most papers in this series will be the results of collecting and research on the Fijian fauna deriving from the NSF-funded “Terrestrial Arthropods of Fiji” project. Five co-PIs and 18 specialists (see Fiji Arthropods I, p. 18) form the core team of scientists who have agreed to publish new taxa that result from collecting during this sur- vey. However, as space allows, we welcome papers from any scientist who is currently working on arthropod taxonomy in Fiji. This second issue contains results of discoveries of new species of Diptera in the families Empididae (Sinclair & Evenhuis), Keroplatidae (Evenhuis), Dolichopodidae (Bickel), and Drosophilidae (McEvey & Polak) from Fiji and nearby Pacific archipelagoes. Manuscripts are currently in press or in preparation on Anisopodidae, Saldidae, Lauxaniidae, Pipun- culidae, Rhagionidae, Keroplatidae, Formicidae, Tabanidae, Muscidae, and Asilidae and will appear in future issues. The editors thank the Government of Fiji (especially the Ministries of Environment and Forestry), the National Science Foundation (DEB 0425970), and the Schlinger Foundation for their support of this project. Types of new species deriving from this study and vouch- er specimens will be deposited in the Fiji National Insect Collection, Suva. All papers in this series are available free of charge as pdf files downloadable from the fol- lowing url: http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/fiji/fiji-arthropods/ We encourage interested authors to contact us before submitting papers.

Many rhagionid genera and species have been found in the Mesozoic. Their fossils came from Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. In the present paper, descriptions of a new genus and species of Rhagionidae from the Middle Jurassic of China, Achrysopilus neimenguensis gen. et sp. n. and a key to genera of Chinese fossil rhagionids are given. Key words: Diptera; Rhagionidae; new genus; new species; China; Middle Jurassic Introduction ial placement is not clear. As defined here, the fam- ily is represented in the Mesozoic of China by six Rhagionidae is a cosmopolitan family of usually small monobasic fossil genera, viz. POLSKA AKADEMIA NAUK MUZEUM I INSTYTUT ZOOLOGII FRAGMENTA FAUNISTICA Tom 38 Warszawa, 30 IX 1995 Nr 9 Przemysław Trojan Occurrence of Rhagionidae, Therevidae and Asilidae (Diptera) in the pine forests of the Berezinsky Biospheric Reserve Abstract A study conducted in three study sites in the canopy layer of a pine forest in the Berezinsky Biospheric Reserve has yiek ed 7 species of Rhagionidae, 6 of Therevidae and 6 of Asilidae. The Berezinsky Biospheric Reserve is diversified both in terms of habitats and floristic composition (Litvinova 1991, Bańkowska & Litvinova 1994). Faunistical- ly, the reserve is very poorly investigated, and the available data do not reflect the diversity of the fauna. The only exception is a study of horse flies [Tabanidae ), which includes a comprehensive list of species and data on their abundance (Tereskkina 1991). The following paper contains information on species composition of three dip- teran families: Rhagionidae, Therevidae and AsiLidae. The catches were perfor med in three study sites: Kvetcha, Perekhodci and Postrezhe. Each site repre sents a different type of pine forest (Bańkowska & Litvinova 1994). The study material was collected with Moericke’s traps in the years 1989 and 1990. A description of the study sites and trapping methods may be found in the paper quoted above. Represe ntatives of the three families under study are not abun dant in the material cc llected. It particularly concerns traps situated in the gro und cover which were frequently subject to damage. Because of that the mate rials collected in canopies and ground cover have been combined. However, we have preserved the division into individual sites where the catches were perfor med.

Silva Gabreta vol. 17 (2-3) p. 73–81 Vimperk, 2011 Some data to horsefly fauna (Diptera: Tabanidae) in south-eastern part of the Bohemian Forest, Czech Republic, with notes to Hybomitra arpadi (Szilády, 1923) Libor Dvořák Municipal Museum Mariánské Lázně, Goethovo náměstí 11, CZ-35301 Mariánské Lázně, Czech Republic [email protected] Abstract The data on 909 specimens of 17 species of horseflies (Diptera: Tabanidae) from six montane stands of south-eastern part of the Bohemian Forest (Šumava Mts.) are presented. Altogether with the older records, 22 species are known from the study area. Typical species of colder stands at medium and higher altitude and/or forest species dominate in the study material. The species spectrum is completed by several species preferring lower and medium altitudes. The most important data from the current survey are the records of a rare montane species, Hybomitra arpadi (Szilády, 1923), and sparsely collected species Atylotus fulvus (Meigen, 1820), Tabanus autumnalis Linnaeus, 1761, and T. bovinus Linnaeus, 1758. Two species recorded during the previous research are listed in the Red List of invertebrates of the Czech Republic: Atylotus sublunaticornis (Zetterstedt, 1842) as endangered and Glaucops hirsutus (Villers, 1789) as vulnerable spe- cies. The distribution of H. arpadi in Europe and in the Czech Republic is discussed. Key words: Šumava Mts., Hybomitra arpadi, distribution, faunistics INTRODUCTION No paper has focused on horsefly fauna of any locality of the south-eastern Bohemian Forest (Šumava Mts.) so far. The only published data from the study area, concerning only single records of extremely rare species Atylotus sublunaticornis (Zetterstedt, 1842) and Glaucops hirsutus (Villers, 1789) from the Mrtvý Luh peat-bog near Dobrá, repeated in several studies (MOUCHA & CHVÁLA 1969; JEŽKOVÁ 1974; JEŽEK 1977b; CHVÁLA 1980).
