International Journal of Health and Economic Development, 6(2), 36-46, July 2020 36 The Relationship between Fame and Fortune in Performance Related Careers with a Shorter Life Expectancy due to Accidents, Addiction, Homicide and Suicide S. Eric Anderson, Ginny Sim La Sierra University, Riverside, California, USA [email protected] Abstract Around 92% of the US population dies from natural causes. However, only 49% of famous musician stars die from natural causes resulting in performance related careers being one of the most dangerous professions in the United States. According to this study, musicians were 20 times more likely to die from an addiction, four times more likely to die from an accident, six times more likely to die of homicide and four times more likely to die of suicide than the general population. Why do dangerous profession lists fail to include musicians in the high risk career list categories? It is not the profession that is dangerous, but primarily the personality type gravitating towards the profession that creates risk. Should certain personality types be directed to non-performance related careers? Probably not, since performing on stage may be a more effective intervention than psychiatric treatment. Keywords: Accidents, Alcohol, Anxiety, depression, homicide, musicians and suicide. Introduction Is there a relationship between fame in performance related careers with the shorter life expectancy due to accidents, drug overdose, homicide and suicide? The number of musicians, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Amy International Journal of Health and Economic Development, 6(2), 36-46, July 2020 37 Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Prince who died of addiction is staggering.

Van Tatenhove, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Kentucky, sitting by designation. No. 12-5715 Moore v. Weinstein Co. COOK, Circuit Judge. Plaintiff-appellant Sam Moore, half of the 1960s and ’70s music duo “Sam & Dave” that sang the well-known songs “Hold On, I’m Comin’” and “Soul Man,” appeals an adverse judgment on his trademark-infringement and common-law claims against the producers and distributors of “Soul Men,” a 2008 fictional film starring actors Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac (the “Movie”), and its accompanying soundtrack (the “Soundtrack”). Moore appeals five claims that center on a common theme: the Movie and Soundtrack infringed his unregistered trademarks of variations of the phrase “Soul Men,” and appropriated his life story for defendants- appellees’ pecuniary gain. For the following reasons, we AFFIRM the district court’s grant of summary judgment. I. Sam Moore is a renowned entertainer. Signed with his coperformer Dave Prater by Atlantic Records in 1965, the duo released a 1967 album titled “Sam & Dave Soul Men” that included their hit single “Soul Man.” Sam & Dave, also known as “Double Dynamite,” recorded music in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Stax Records company.

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY FANTASY RECORDS EXCEPT AS NOTEO. n early January of this year, I flew out to San Francisco to spend two days I at Fantasy Records. The purpose of my visit was to listen to old recording sessions from the 1960s and '70s that took place at the long-gone Stax Records recording studio, once located in Memphis, Te nn. Stax went bankrupt back in 1975, and Fantasy had acquired most of its assets, including the original master tapes of such hits as "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay," "Soul Man" and "Theme From Shaft." This was my third visit to Fantasy to listen to the Stax tapes. The five-story Fantasy Records build ing, located in Berkeley, just across the bay from San Francisco, is somewhat modern looking, with a tinted-glass and white concrete-slab exterior. The Stax tapes are kept on the second floor, in a vault-like room behind a door you'd think was for a hall closet.
