INTRODUCTION In the past worthwhile “signature events” brought fame and fortune to countries, provinces and cities all over the world. Modern times with its competition on all fronts and increasing entertainment options make it very difficult to find a place in the sun for any new activity, and it is not easy to create such events without simply copying another event. Our aim was to find an event that would stand out and live up to the challenge of becoming a Signature event for Mpumalanga. This presentation tells you more. 2. THE SABIE 109TT This will be an event based on international proven results that will, combined with local vision and drive, create a Signature event for Mpumalanga. Chances are that it will become one of the best and most exciting South African Sporting events, ever! This event will be based on a world-renowned motorcycle race, held annually for more than a century on the Isle of Man. 3. THE ISLE OF MAN TT The Isle of Man TT is a race for motorcycles that has been running since 1907.

DPRU Policy Brief No. 00/P5 December 2000 1 DPRU Policy Brief 00/P5 Foreword The Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU), located within the University of Cape Town’s School of Economics, was formed in 1990 to undertake economic policy-oriented research. The aim of the unit’s work is the achievement of more effective public policy for industrial development in South and Southern Africa. The DPRU’s mission is to undertake internationally recognised policy research that contributes to the quality and effectiveness of such policy. The unit is involved in research activities in the following areas: · labour markets and poverty · regulatory reform · regional integration These policy briefs are intended to catalyse policy debate. They express the views of their respective authors and not necessarily those of the DPRU. They present the major research findings of the Industrial Strategy Project (ISP). The aim of the ISP is to promote industrial development in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) through regional economic integration and cooperation. It is a three-year project that commenced in August 1998 and is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Ultimately, this project will identify the policies and programmes that support regional interactions that contribute to the industrialisation of SADC national economies. This

I was taking a trip back from Pretoria to Phalaborwa, which I had done many times over the years. I got to the end of my trip on the N4 highway, turned left onto the R33 to Belfast which then turns off onto R540 to Dullstroom, which eventually lands you up in Lydenburg. Having done this trip so many times, I was basically driving the route in ‘automatic’ (you know the kind, when you start your vehicle to go to town on Saturday and then find yourself at work

As a result, reducing road traffic crashes is, arguably, the most critical aspect that needs to be addressed within a roadway system. Injuries and fatalities resulting from traffic crashes are a serious problem. Globally, the number of road traffic deaths continues to rise, reaching a devastating 1.35 million fatalities in 2016, which equates to almost 3700 people being killed on the world’s roads every day. Despite the efforts made by government agencies and the engineering community, the road crash fatality rate in South Africa remains higher than the global average.

BOX 75, PILGRIM'S REST, 1290 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A Phase 1 Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) regarding archaeological and other cultural heritage resources was conducted on the footprint for the proposed Nkambeni Cemetery, on portion A (portion of portion 148), of the farm Kaap Block, section F, Numbi. The study area is situated on topographical map 1:50 000, 2531AA KIEPERSOL, which is in the Mpumalanga Province. This area falls under the jurisdiction of the Mbombela Local Municipality, and the Ehlanzeni District Municipality. The National Heritage Resources Act, no 25 (1999)(NHRA), protects all heritage resources, which are classified as national estate. The NHRA stipulates that any person who intends to undertake a development, is subjected to the provisions of the Act. The applicant, Mbombela Municipality, who is requesting the development of the new Nkambeni cemetery (with access roads, parking, security offices and ablution facilities), is faced with a challenge of providing land for burial purposes. The current cemetery, servicing the Nkambeni community is already running out of burial space. The proposed site is 41 ha in extent.

Contact: Mark Turner Call +27 78 075 0720 Email: [email protected] Local Fax: 086-6105113 INT Fax: +27-86-6105113 Directions Oxwagon Lodge is located on one of the main Johannesburg - Hartbeespoort roads, which is called the route R511. If you drive north from Fourways (Johannesburg), stay on the R511 all the way. Remember to look out for the left-turn which the R511 takes a few kms after Diepsloot/Dainfern. Continue on the R511 for about 20 kms. Just as Hartbeespoort Dam comes into view at the top of Saartjiesnek, proceed down the hill for 0.5 km and look for our entrance, on the right hand side. Turn in here and take the sand road back to the top of the hill. If you're coming from Randburg along the R512, proceed to the Broederstroom Farm Stall T-junction and then turn right. Drive about 9 kms to the R511 (passing Pelindaba on your right) and see the signs for Hartbeespoort. Turn left onto the R511 and proceed up the hill until the Dam comes into view. As above, proceed down the hill for 0.5 kms and look for our entrance on the right hand side. Turn in here and take the sand road back to the top. From the centre of Pretoria, take the "original" N4 heading west and come off at the second Pelindaba exit. We are then about 2 kms along the R511 towards Hartbeespoort, just follow the signs. If travelling from Pretoria's northern suburbs, take the "other N4" heading west (very confusing!) towards Rustenberg and come off at the Brits exit.

  • The Geology and Geochemistry of the Sterkspruit Intrusion, Barberton Mountain Land, Mpumalanga Province
THE GEOLOGY AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE STERKSPRUIT INTRUSION, BARBERTON MOUNTAIN LAND, MPUMALANGA PROVINCE Gavin Patrick Conway A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science. Johannesburg, 1997 11 DECLARATION I declare that this dissertation is my own, unaided work. It is being submitted for the Degree of Master of Science in the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It has not been submitted before for any degree or examination in any other University. __I_It __ ·daYOf A~V\.-~t 19 't1-- 111 ABSTRACT The Sterkspruit Intrusion, in the south-western portion of the Barberton greenstone belt, is a sill-like body containing rocks of gabbroic to dioritic composition. It is hosted by a sequence of komatiitic basalts and komatiites of the Lower Onverwacht Group. The intrusion is considered unique in this area in that it lacks ultramafic components and has no affinities with the surrounding mafic- to- ultramafic lavas. The gabbroic suite also contains an unusual abundance of quartz, and the chill margin shows an evolved quartz-normative, tholeiitic parental magma. Based on petrographic and geochemical evidence, the intrusion can be subdivided into four gabbroic zones and a quartz diorite, which is an end product of a differentiating magma. The chill margin records an MgO content of 4.8%, an Mg# of 42, an Si02 value of 52.5% and a normative plagioclase composition of An 44. The sill-like nature of the body, indicated by geochemical trends, and the steep sub-vertical layering, point to a body that has been tilted along with the surrounding lavas.

Archaeological investigations, done at Bakkiesfontein 568 IR, (Dipaliseng Local Municipality) Greylingstad Mpumalanga Done by Domonique-Marie Verkerk BHSC (Heritage and Cultural Tourism), 2011, UP BA Archaeology, 2012, UP Tel: 012 3333931 E-mail: [email protected] Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, University of Pretoria 5 October 2015 Summary Concentration camps were a tactic created by the British to end the South African War (1899- 1902). Many innocent Boer and African families were sent to these camps where they died of diseases, such as, poor conditions and lack of shelters. Boer families were sent to concentration camps in Heidelberg. Africans, on the other hand, were sent to the concentration camp in Greylingstad. A possible location for the African concentration camp in Greylingstad is Bakkiesfontein 568 IR. Unfortunately, there is nothing to show where this camp is as a fire destroyed many of the records. Bakkiesfontein 568 IR was chosen as a possible location for the African concentration camp in Greylingstad because of the old house, stream, stone walls, railway, SR fort and the African cemetery. Bakkiesfontein was surveyed by foot. The aim was to find the location of the concentration camp. Areas where pedestrian surveys were conducted included the house, barn, possible midden, graves, stone walls and stone circle. The pedestrian survey showed that Iron Age communities also lived on the farm. Three test-pits were also conducted. Areas where the test-pits were conducted included the midden, between stone walls and on a slope near a stone wall. The test-pits were not that successful. The artefacts found during the test- pits and surveys include; metal, ceramic pieces and pottery, glass pieces and even plastic.
