Al centro del progetto di restauro e valorizzazione si trova l'ambizione di SPRIMENTAZIONE/ fare del Forte un centro di interpretazione della cultura alpina teso entro un dialogo costante tra tradizione e contemporaneità: l'interpretazione e il racconto delle Alpi EXPERIMENTTION contemporanee, con il loro fascino e le loro contraddizioni, incorporano la storia e la tradizione alpina. Un progetto culturale che unisce il rigore della missione educa- tiva e scientifica del museo alla forza comunicativa del parco a tema, per capire e conoscere attraverso emozione e divertimento. Il Forte offre al visitatore una porta di accesso privilegiata al patrimonio della Valle d'Aosta e della bassa Valle, con lo spazio Vallée Culture, l’Info Lounge e le numerose iniziative legate al microsistema Bard-Donnas- Pont Saint Martin, di cui è parte integrante. Art and landscape history: British artists in nineteenth- century Val d’Aosta (NW Italy) Pietro Piana, Charles Watkins and Ross Balzaretti Keywords: Landscape Change, Aosta, Alpine landscape, Topography, Elizabeth Fortescue, John Brett Abstract This paper explores the value of landscape and topographical art for understanding contemporary landscapes of the Val d’Aosta, NW Italy. The region became very popular with British tourists in the early nineteenth- century and several amateur and professional artists depicted its landscapes. The paper focuses on the case study of Saint-Pierre, its castle and the surrounding landscapes, examining views by amateur artists like Elizabeth Fortescue and professionals such as John Brett. The examination of art, alongside written accounts, historical cartography and field data, provides insights into the landscape history of the Val d’Aosta. The analysis of the artists’ representations raises questions of landscape identity and characterisation and provides evidence for subtle changes in local land use practices which have had a significant impact on land use change. We suggest that this artistic heritage should be recognized as a source to help improve sustainable tourism in the area and to assist in the development of current land management policies. Introduction What can topographical and landscape art tell us about the landscape history of a place? Can it provide useful evidence for current and future landscape management? In this paper we explore these questions by considering British paintings and drawings of the Val d’Aosta and Saint- Pierre Castle in the nineteenth-century. We focus first on why the Val d’Aosta became popular with artists and explore how it became a didactic landscape for amateurs and professionals. -

Marengo and the Journal of General Jean Boudet By T.E. Crowdy Following my translation of General Guénand’s notes on the battle of Marengo, I present the 1800 campaign journal of General of Division Boudet, translated into English and published fully for the first time. This journal is a daily summary of the movements and operations of Boudet’s division during the 1800 Marengo campaign. It commences on 23 May when the division passes into the Italian side of the Alps, and ends on 16 June following the Convention of Alessandria between the two rival armies. The journal’s account of the famous battle of Marengo on 14 June 1800 is one of the key primary sources of the battle, describing Desaix’s arrival on the field, and the fierce fighting in the evening. The battle of Marengo and the feats of the 9th Light infantry during the battle have long been an area of particular interest for me. This journal was one of my first research targets in the late 1990s when I first began to research Marengo and the regimental history of the ‘Incomparable’ 9th Light Infantry. Boudet’s journal is one of a number of handwritten manuscripts bound into a single volume at the Service Historique de la Défense (SHD), at Vincennes. The manuscript (MR 1610) bears all the hallmarks of being written daily, or at least very soon after the campaign, perhaps from notes taken on the way. Having collected a great many documents relative to the campaign in the early twentieth century, Captain Gaspar de Cugnac held Boudet’s journal in high regard, and in his opinion, credited Boudet with great sincerity. -

Mansfield Italian Highways And Byways From A Motor Car CHAPTER I THE WAY ABOUT ITALY ONE travels in Italy chiefly in search of the picturesque, but in Florence, Rome, Naples, Venice or Milan, and in the larger towns lying between, there is, in spite of the romantic association of great names, little that appeals to one in a personal sense. One admires what Ruskin, Hare or Symonds tells one to admire, gets a smattering of the romantic history of the great families of the palaces and villas of Rome and Florence, but absorbs little or nothing of the genuine feudal traditions of the background regions away from the well-worn roads. Along the highways and byways runs the itinerary of the author and illustrator of this book, and they have thus been able to view many of the beauties and charms of the countryside which have been unknown to most travellers in Italy in these days of the modern railway. was our watchword as we set out to pass as many of our Italian days and nights as possible in places little celebrated in popular annals, a better way of knowing Italy than one will ever know it when viewed simply from the Vatican steps or Frascati’s gardens. The palaces and villas of Rome, Florence and Venice are known to most European travellers—as they know Capri, Vesuvius or Amalfi; but of the grim castles of Ancona, of Rimini and Ravenna, and of the classic charms of Taormina or of Sarazza they know considerably less; and still less of Monte Cristo’s Island, of Elba, of Otranto, and of the little hidden-away mountain towns of the Alps of Piedmont and the Val d’Aoste.
