The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror in 1066-7, is one of the world’s most famous fortresses, and Britain’s most visited heritage site. It was built to protect and control the city and the White Tower survives largely intact from the Norman period. Architecture of almost all styles that have since flourished in England may be found within the walls. The Tower has been a fortress, a palace and a prison, and has housed the Royal Mint, the Public Records and the Royal Observatory. It was for centuries the arsenal for small arms, the predecessor of the present Royal Armouries, and has from early times guarded the Crown Jewels. Today the Tower is the key to British history for visitors who come every year from all over the world to relive the past and to enjoy the pageantry of the present. It is deservedly a World Heritage Site. The Government is accountable to UNESCO and the wider international community for the future conservation and presentation of the Tower. It is a responsibility we take seriously. The purpose of the Plan is to provide an agreed framework for long-term decision-making on the conservation and improvement of the Tower and sustaining its outstanding universal value. -

Isle of Wight Parks, Gardens & Other Designed Landscapes Historic Environment Action Plan Isle of Wight Gardens Trust: March 2015 2 Foreword The Isle of Wight landscape is recognised as a source of inspiration for the picturesque movement in tourism, art, literature and taste from the late 18th century but the particular significance of designed landscapes (parks and gardens) in this cultural movement is perhaps less widely appreciated. Evidence for ‘picturesque gardens’ still survives on the ground, particularly in the Undercliff. There is also evidence for many other types of designed landscapes including early gardens, landscape parks, 19th century town and suburban gardens and gardens of more recent date. In the 19th century the variety of the Island’s topography and the richness of its scenery, ranging from gentle cultivated landscapes to the picturesque and the sublime with views over both land and sea, resulted in the Isle of Wight being referred to as the ‘Garden of England’ or ‘Garden Isle’. Designed landscapes of all types have played a significant part in shaping the Island’s overall landscape character to the present day even where surviving design elements are fragmentary. Equally, it can be seen that various natural components of the Island’s landscape, in particular downland and coastal scenery, have been key influences on many of the designed landscapes which will be explored in this Historic Environment Action Plan (HEAP). It is therefore fitting that the HEAP is being prepared by the Isle of Wight Gardens Trust as part of the East Wight Landscape Partnership’s Down to the Coast Project, particularly since well over half of all the designed landscapes recorded on the Gardens Trust database fall within or adjacent to the project area. -

ANALYSIS | ANALYSE MONUMENTS TO THE MOTHERLAND The Lost Gothic Houses of John George Howard (1803-1890)1 JESSICA MACE, Ph.D., is a SSHRC (Social > JESSICA MACE Sciences and Humanities Research Council) postdoctoral fellow in affiliation with the Canada Research Chair in Urban Heritage at the Université du Québec à Montréal. earing the middle of the nineteenth Ncentury, the use of the Gothic Revival style for houses had been a mainstay of architecture in England for almost a hundred years. On the outskirts of the Empire, however, the situation was rather different. In the English colony of Upper Canada (present-day Southern Ontario as it was named from 1791-1841), the only known examples of early Gothic houses are few and appear to have existed in the context of present-day Toronto beginning in the 1830s. None of these homes survives, but all seem to have been designed by one of the province’s first and most prolific architects, John George Howard [1803-1890] (fig. 1). Although Howard designed a variety of Gothic houses, including small labourers’ cot- tages,2 this paper will provide an exam- ination of his designs for the houses of the elite. These homes, in particular, sig- nal an interest in Gothic for associations of prestige, lineage, and the assertion of social standing. Through an examina- tion of a heretofore unexplored aspect of Howard’s multi-faceted career (including new attributions), this article will reveal Howard’s ability to keep abreast of con- temporary architectural developments in England and to produce fashionable homes with desirable associations. -

Harbor Drive friends. The Toga Party was a blast; most members came Redondo Beach in costume and they were quite creative. And what about CA 90277 that PRYC Punch… Hey that got folks going. We had a 310-372-3960 great time down at Cabrillo Yacht Club thanks to Bruce and PRYC OFFICERS Tony on “Last Resort”. Bruce, once again, thanks for Commodore making the arrangements. Don & Cathy on “Bottom Time” Pat Paxson Vice Commodore along with Tammy on “Newfie’s Land” and Kevin powered down together. What a Shawn Milligan wonderful spread on the dock along with Cathy’s fresh catch of scallops which she sautéed for the group. For dinner we went up to the club and dined on the Rear Commodore Kevin Herink veranda. Cabrillo YC is beatiful and the people are quite friendly. I missed the Pot Luck Olympic Party, but have no regrets because I was in Secretary Avalon for the weekend and attended the Kenny Loggins concert. The man and Shelia Anderson his band put on a great show. This was the first time I was inside the Casino and Fleet Captain as I walked up the wide hall into the main ballroom and out to the balcony I felt like Carl Chiverton I went back into time. My yardsale buddy 85 year old Bonnie Peacock 85 told me Junior Staff Commodore some great stories about dancing to the orchestra on the Catalina Steamer and Penny Towne Vowles her adventures on the island when she was young. -
