The annual SSAFA Qualifying Stableford was held this month. This was won by Graham Warren with 36 points, John Moss the runner-up with 33. They will both represent us at the end of season tournament at Bawburgh which sees all participating Norfolk clubs represented. Graham and John were congratulated by Ian Pilcher, Manager SSAFA Golf, who we were pleased to welcome to our event. He told us a little about the work of SSAFA, the oldest national tri-service military charity dating from the late nineteenth century. It works to ensure that the needs of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families are met in an appropriate and timely way. Its work in Norfolk is carried out by 55 volunteers and in 2017 it supported 431 dependents, and in harmony with other military charities distributed £255,000. Golf days play a small part financially but importantly help to promote an understanding of SSAFA and its work. 21 golfers played in our competition and £105 was raised. Before he left Ian presented Pat Holman with a SSAFA ‘shield’ for display within the clubhouse. Qualifying Stableford SSAFA Our friendlies this month have been played in a variety of conditions. We played at March on a saturated course losing 5-1. Contrasting sunny days saw our two home games with Middleton and finish 3-3. Eggs in Jar Winner: Peter Lunt Daily Mail Foursomes 2nd Round It was my great pleasure to watch Tracy Russell and Trish McManus play their second-round match against Thetford on Sunday 22nd April. The Thetford team consisted of Jess Dixon playing off 2 and Shelley Pleasance off 4 so they provided formidable opposition. Our ladies played superbly and thanks to an impressive chip in by Tracy from off the green on the 9th, they finished the first 9 all square. They managed to hold this score until the 15th when they went 1 down. Shelley the sunk a long putt on the 16th for a birdie which put them in a dormie 2 position. Unfazed, our ladies won the 17th so both teams teed off on 18th with Thetford leading by 1 hole. Unfortunately Tracy and Trish could not pull off a win on the last hole so the match went to Thetford. It was a delight to watch really high quality golf from these four ladies and to witness a match played in such excellent spirit. Congratulations to the Thetford ladies, but also to our Ryston Park team for representing the Club in such a positive and sportsmanlike manner. Janet Coles Lady President SPONSORS - Morris Armitage Estate Agents We are very grateful to Morris Armitage Estate Agents for their generosity in sponsoring our new flags. We have white flags for back hole position, yellow flags (as shown) for middle of the green position and red flags for front of the greens. These are good quality flags with Ryston Park logo on one side and Morris Armitage on the other.

Our Ladies Captain Boo Moore received a card from Ryston Normal for Norfolk Celebrity Desmond of Wiveton Hall Handicaps wishing her well. With the recommendation from Golf to keep Boo enjoyed his programmes handicaps up to date, the Committee agreed with Mr P and a lady member’s Holman that all social cards, where a player has played daughter-in-law works in under their handicap, are to be submitted to the Lady's and Men's handicap secretaries so they can maintain Desmond’s office and an overall history of members playing ability. arranged the surprise. A 6 monthly review of handicaps will be taken, and these social cards will be used to give a view for the history of the players' golfing ability. DELAMERE COMBOY SCRATCH COMPETITION

Delamere Golf Club sits on the edge of Delamere Forest in Cheshire. The Delamere Comboy Trophy was presented by Carol Comboy to CCLGA in 1975 as a County Scratch Competition. In 2014 it became the Delamere Comboy Scratch Trophy - an Open 36 Hole Scratch Competition and immediately attracted a National field. In 2015 it was added to England Golf list of order of merit competitions and has attracted an elite entry of golfers from a National field. Tiff Mills invited Ann Fletcher to be her caddy and they travelled to Cheshire on Saturday 31st March for a practice round before the 36 hole competition on Sunday 1st April. The course is in a state of refurbishment, 90% of the gorse and 30% of the trees had been grubbed out, so the course was therefore altered to accommodate the GR’s and holes being upgraded. They had an early start on Sunday with 8.04 tee. A fifteen foot downhill birdie putt on the first was a good start for Tiff. The greens were running fast and true, though undulating, a very good test of putting skills. Tiff carded an excellent score of 76 gross for her first round. The turnaround was very tight and her 2nd round tee time was 12.04. The afternoon weather turned colder and her afternoon score was gross 79. (Playing off a 3 handicap on a strange course is still a good result) Looking at the start sheet Ann could see that 60 % of the field were handicap 1 and below. Although the Delamere Comboy is a Scratch competition there was also a prize for the handicap competition. Tiff came in 16th out of a field of 56 in the handicap competition. An enjoyable, yet tiring weekend for them both but one we hope Tiff will repeat next year. Considering Tiff is working full time and doesn’t get to play as much golf as previously, she still remains very competitive and with the RNLI result she is still playing to her handicap. Congratulations Tiff a great result for you and the club. Thanks to Ann for being available to caddy and support. St George’s Day Social Golf 5 teams of 3 contested the St George’s Day social event. Resplendent in red and white each player took turns to play with a red ball to contribute to their team score. Jim Marsh took the men’s individual prize scoring 32 points. Anne ‘Birdie Queen’ Emmerson won the ladies prize with a magnificent 38 points and her team of Tracy Russell and Ted Filby won the red ball team prize. Nearest the pin for ladies was Tracy Russell. The next social event is on May 7th and will feature the War of the Witches, a team match between my team and Susan’s team. Do not miss this event which will be very exciting! Maggie Ward

Landlords Charity Day

Sarah & George Pratt kindly allowed the Gamekeeper’s /Landlords to hold their annual golf day at Ryston Park Golf Club. This year it was held in aid of James Bagge’s Charity “Walking for Norfolk “ to raise money for unpaid carers. Around forty players who are friends or members of the local shoots participated . On arrival everyone enjoyed their bacon rolls and coffee before braving the weather. Unfortunately the weather rather spoilt the day which meant the competition was decided over 9 holes as the course started to flood ! Winner: Andrew Howlett 19 points, 2nd Ian Buttle (on count back) 17 points, 3rd John Rice 17 points. Ladies Winner: Janet Rice 14 points. Nearest the Pin: Peter Jones from Heygate Farms Swaffham. Once they dried out everyone enjoyed lunch provided by Classic catering. Heygate Farms donated one hundred pounds which gave them a profit on the day of Nine Hundred and Eighty Six Pounds. John Alflatt has been a member at Ryston Park GC for 69 years and during this time has been Club Captain & President of the golf club and only recently retired as a Trustee. His handicap has been as low as 3 and at the age of 90 he is still playing regularly off a 18 handicap and John held the course record at one point. John celebrated his 90th birthday on the 1st April by holding a party at the golf club where friends from Golf, Bowls, Twinning and ex work colleagues helped him celebrate in style. John has participated in many types of sports including skiing, curling, bowls and snooker, to name a few. John’s partner Joyce and his daughter Kim have changed to Social Membership but 90 year old John continues golfing - an example to us all.
