Cook Yale University Press, 452 pp., $35.00 In both his life and his writings Alfred Kazin was divided between two ideas of what it meant to be a Jew in America. He was committed to one idea and tempted by the other. Kazin was committed to the idea that a Jew was an outsider, with no special loyalties to any collective identity, not even that of other Jews, and that a Jew could therefore sympathize with other outsiders, regardless of their ethnicity, skin color, or other marker of identity. For him to be a Jew was to be an individual, with all of individuality's responsibility, loneliness, and willingness to take risks, someone whose deepest concern was justice—justice for all other outsiders as well as for himself. Whenever Kazin lapsed from this commitment, he later returned to it with a sense of exhilaration at seeing clearly again. He was tempted by the idea that a Jew was a member of a separate and unique group of people, loyal to one another and their history, with a collective experience that differed from all others. To be a Jew, in this way of thinking, was to share in a group identity to which individuality must ultimately be sacrificed, and to be concerned most deeply with power—power wielded by other groups against one's own, and power that one's own group can gain through alliances with those more powerful.

Alfred Kazin’s Journals is a profound and exciting book, more so even than the best of the dozen works of criticism and autobiography that he published during his lifetime. Almost every morning from the age of eighteen, in 1933, until his death in 1998, he wrote his private thoughts about literature, history, the social world of publishing, universities, and politics, his four marriages and uncountable affairs, the “many people I know and admire, or rather love,” and what it means to be a Jew. He wrote sometimes as a literary and erotic conqueror, sometimes as a guilty victim of conscience, always with infectious intellectual energy. Kazin climbed from a Jewish ghetto in Brooklyn to the sudden fame of his book about American writing, On Native Grounds (1942), to the literary editor’s desk at The New Republic, where he followed Edmund Wilson and Malcolm Cowley, and on to the success of his memoir A Walker in the City (1951). UMEÅ 1979 ACTA UNIVERSITATIS UMENSIS Umeå Studies in the Humanities. 26 Monica Loeb Vonnegut’s Duty-Dance with Death - Theme and Structure in Slaughterhouse-Five Umeå, 1979 ISBN 91-7174-031-7 Abstract The influence of Vonnegut’s didactic purpose of writing on the treatment of theme and structure in Slaughterhouse-Five is investigated in this study. The following elements of structure are studied: point of view, the treatment of time, charac­ terization, the use of other sources, and imagery. These are constantly related to the novel’s themes, such as war, cruelty, death, time, innocence, survival, free will, fantasy and regeneration. Since Vonnegut himself survived the Dresden bombings during World War Two, his novel is very personal, which is particularly reflected in his point-of-view technique, the subject of Chapter One. Vonnegut cre­ ates double narrators in Slaughterhouse-Five : a personal one, including authorial intrusions, and an impersonal one. This division is a direct reflection of the dichotomy between reality and fantasy that prevails in the novel. In Chapter Two, Vonnegut’s treatment of time is demonstrated to be a process of spatialization. Structurally, this means a fragmented narrative split into several time levels that chiefly form what the author calls his ”telegraphic schizophrenic" style. Thematically, the protagonist comes "unstuck" in time, thus succeeding in confronting an absurd world and finally transcending death.

Fifty years prior, in 1961, Governor Nelson Rockefeller signed legislation creating the City University of New York (CUNY) and the legislature endorsed the Board of Higher Education’s recommendation that this newly formed institution be given authority to grant doctoral and postgraduate professional degrees. Thus the GC was born. In honor of the GC’s fiftieth anniversary, faculty members, students, staff, and alumni gathered in Elebash Recital Hall on October 25 to celebrate this major milestone. “We are here to remember the great scholars of our past that set us on the path of scholarly achievement,” proclaimed President William P. Kelly before introducing seven current faculty members who, one at a time, took to the stage to pay tribute to a well-known predecessor. David Nasaw, the Arthur M.     Alfred Kazin: A Biography by Richard Cook, Yale University Press, 2008, 464 pp. Michael Weiss In 1959, Alfred Kazin wrote ‘The Alone Generation,’ an incisive and brilliant essay about the failures of modern literature. The critic who would later describe himself as a ‘cultural conservative’ and, semi-seriously, a ‘literary reactionary’ uttered this cri de coeur: I am tired of reading for compassion instead of pleasure. In novel after novel, I am presented with people who are so soft, so wheedling, so importunate, that the actions in which they are involved are too indecisive to be interesting or to develop those implications which are the life-blood of narrative. The age of ‘psychological man,’ of the herd of aloners, has finally proved the truth of Tocqueville’s observation that in modern times the average man is absorbed in a very puny object, himself, to the point of satiety. Not many people write like this anymore, with daring subjectivity. Rare today is the freelance reviewer who sees compassion as an insufficient measure of aptitude in fiction. Kazin avoided the Marxian gloss or the close reading of the New Critics, preferring instead a full-blooded, fist-pounding approach to telling good books from bad. He was demanding, irritable and shrewd; and for almost half a century, he was well sought after for his opinions. In fact, it would be hard to mistake the author of the above passage for a man of any other generation or milieu. ‘Herd of aloners’ sounds suspiciously like Harold Rosenberg’s famous epithet for the detractors and unwitting apologists of mass culture – the ‘herd of independent minds’ – which Rosenberg applied as cuttingly to the highbrow Partisan Review crowd as he did to the purveyors of passive entertainment, for whom the common denominator could never be low enough.

    1 The Trauma of Sharply Fallen Circumstances World of Our Fathers IN ONE OF those odd coincidences of “Jewish geography,” David Horenstein and Nettie Goldman, Irving Howe’s parents, had lived as teenagers in the shtetlekh of Bukovina (between Russia and Romania), and had arrived in the United States in 1912 on the same boat. But they did not get to know each other until they met in the Bronx, where they spent the next thirty-five years together.1 When Irving was born on June 11, 1920, and throughout the 1930s and ’40s, the Bronx neighborhoods in which the Horensteins lived were predominantly Jewish, and Yiddish was the language of the home, streets, and shops. At the newsstands, popular Yiddish dailies, includ- ing the Forverts and Der Tog, sold as well as or better than English-lan- guage papers. The Yiddish language, a significant carryover from the Old World, provided parents who spoke the foreign tongue an element of familiarity in an alien land. Their young children, therefore, often started school knowing Yiddish better than English. This was true for Alfred Kazin and Daniel Bell and many other children of Jewish immi- grants who later would be counted among the New York intellectuals.2 And it was certainly true for Irving Howe, who could both read Yiddish and speak it. The public school proved to be an arena in which immigrant chil- dren began to differentiate themselves from their parents.
