Donations in part from our members help fund these events. In addition, our extensive sheet music archive and curriculum materials are available to music educators in San Diego County and beyond. In addition, the group has performed at the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido, the Twilight in Balboa Park Summer Concerts series and, of course, the San Diego Jazz Fest. Leader John Contreras is the reedman and, together with trombonist Lee Fugal and drummer Kenny Powell, is one of the featured vocalists. Phil Kirk (trumpet), Ken Dillard (piano), Jim Goodwin (banjo/guitar), and Stan Kling (tuba) complete the lineup. Dixie Express plays traditional jazz, blues, ragtime, swing arrange- ments and crossover tunes with a touch of western swing. Be sure to hear this band on Oct. 18 and don’t forget your parasols and “shout rags.”
