Sabeta aka Mau Mau: The Influence of Hip Hop on Zimbabwe's Urban Culture INFLUENCE OF HIP HOP ON ZIMBABWE’S URBAN CULTURE . The Influence of Hip Hop on Zimbabwe’s Urban Culture Shingirayi Sabeta aka Mau Mau Shingirayi Sabeta aka Mau Mau is one of the pioneers of Hip Hop in Zimbabwe. His debut single “Mau Mau” was released in 1997 and he followed his success with two albums, Mfecane (2001) and Coup D’Etat (2002). His early recordings defined Shona rap and was acclaimed for its politically conscious lyrics. Today, Shingirayi produces Gospel Hip Hop and his latest album appeared in 2010. The following piece is a transcription of his presentation at the Hiphop Symposium that took place at the University of Zimbabwe on February 27th, 2013, which is a personal reflection about the Zimbabwean Hip Hop scene, its beginnings in the 1980s and the directions it is currently taking. We live in a world that is dominated and heavily influenced by one thing that none of us can escape: mass media. If you live in a city or town in Zimbabwe it means that on a daily basis you will be exposed to what is going on globally through newspapers, magazines, radio, television, the computer and now – your mobile phone. So you effectively have the world on tap: just a click away. And just as Western culture as a whole filters to us here in Zimbabwe through mass media, so does the sub-culture of Hip Hop. Most of us know Hip Hop as a type of music, a dance, a style of dress, a way of speaking, an attitude.

Sang Nguyen REFERENCES TO WOMEN IN R&B AND HIP HOP Case Studies of Girl, Baby, Bitch and Shorty Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences Master’s Thesis April 2020 TIIVISTELMÄ Sang Nguyen: References to Women in R&B and Hip Hop: Case Studies of Girl, Baby, Bitch and Shorty Pro gradu- tutkielma Tampereen yliopisto Englannin kielen ja kirjallisuuden maisteriopinnot Huhtikuu 2020 Tässä pro gradu-tutkielmassa tutkitaan nimitysten girl, baby, bitch ja shorty naisiin liittyvää käyttöä ja merkityksiä R&B ja hip hop –musiikkigenreissä 15 vuoden ajalta (2000-2015, poislukien vuosi 2006). Keskeisinä tavoitteina tutkielmassa on selvittää edellä mainittujen nimitysten yleisyys R&B:ssä ja hip hopissa, tutkia nimitysten merkityksiä ja konnotaatioita eri sanakirjoissa ja laulujen konteksteissa ja pohtia näiden nimitysten ja musiikkilajien sosiaalista ulottuvuutta ja yhteisöjen ja laulujen sisältöjen vuorovaikutusta. Tutkielma on sekä kvantitatiivinen että kvalitatiivinen. Kvantitatiivinen tieto pohjautuu vuosittaisiin Top 20- lauluihin Billboardin R&B and hip hop- listoilta (yhteensä 300 kappaletta). Tiedonkeruu tapahtui AntConc- ohjelman avulla, jossa kerätyistä laulunsanoista sai muodostettua oman korpuksen tarkempaa numeroanalyysia varten.

  • From Queen Latifah to Lil' Kim: the Evolution of the Feminist MC
Maneto: The Temple University Multi-Disciplinary Undergraduate Research Journal | 1.1 From Queen Latifah to Lil’ Kim: The Evolution of the Feminist MC Jacquelyn Jordan “Every time I hear a brotha call a girl a bitch or a hoe/trying to make a sista feel low/you know all of that’s gots to go.” -U.N.I.T.Y, Queen Latifah “I am diamond cluster hustler/Queen bitch, supreme bitch/kill a nigga for my nigga by any means bitch/murder scene bitch/clean bitch, disease free bitch.” -Queen Bitch, Lil’ Kim The feminist lyricism of early female hip-hop artists conveyed a message of empowerment, and an awareness of the power of one’s own femininity. Artists like Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, Monie Love and Queen Latifah reigned as the queens of hip-hop in the late 80’s and early 90’s, cementing their legacy as hip-hop royalty. But it was during the late 90’s and into the millennium, that this feminist message within hip-hop music began to change. A new kind of feminism was developing within the music and culture, with lyrics focused on sexual liberation, control, and sexual domination. In this paper, I will argue that while the style in which these concepts were presented, there no distinct difference between the feminist philosophy of a socially-conscious artist like Queen Latifah or a more sexually liberated artist like Lil’ Kim. Both encouraged women to be liberated, empowered and to resist sexist oppression through the genre of hip-hop. The major problem with feminism is that it is difficult to define.

The study will conduct an analysis of two corpora of songs from two different periods (early 1970s and late 2010s), as they appeared in the American chart Billboard, in order to provide valid results both in terms of quantitative distribution and qualitative delineation of such themes. Furthermore, those results will be processed with the purpose of defining a co-relation between modern American society and modern American pop music. In light of this research, it is argued that this co-relation is represented by the two elements of selfishness and materiality. Towards Selfishness and Materiality4 1 Introduction Music is one of the oldest arts ever existed: it has been accompanying humankind for 40000 years (Killin, 2018) and now permeates almost every aspect of our lives.
