Occasionally, I need to a large, shallow hole.The job normally calls fqr a Forstner bit. The problem is these bits can be a little pricey. So, I converted an inexspen- sive spade bit into a shop-made version of a Forstner bit by grinding down the long tip (seePhoto at left). To do this, you'Il need a spadebit with "spurs" on the outer edge.The spurs will give you a clean hole. Start by removing the bulk of the material off the Spurs Grindand tip using your grinder.Then "dress" the tip with a file, (detail,lqft). Keep the new tip aligned with the center hole in the body of the bit for accu- rate holes. It's best to use the mod- ified bit in a drill pressto prevent the bit from wandering.
