EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Behr’s Hairstreaks (Satyrium behrii) were searched for by BCCC crews over a 4 day period, targeting seven locations in appropriate habitat as recommended by local experts. They found Behr’s Hairstreaks in three of the locations and incidentally in one other while targeting another species of .

INTRODUCTION

In British Columbia Behr's Hairstreak, Satyrium behrii (Edwards) is restricted to the southern Okanagan Valley from Penticton south where its larval foodplant Antelope Brush () occurs. Nectar plants include Erigeron sp and introduced Yellow Sweet Clover. Behr’s Hairstreak main flight period is June into July. It has a Conservation Status Rank of S1 (critically imperiled) in British Columbia and is listed as threatened by COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada). The main threat to this species is the loss of the Antelope brush to development, vineyards other agricultural encroachment.

Behr’s Hairstreak was one of a number of target invertebrates that were surveyed for during the spring and summer of 2007 by the British Columbia Conservation Corp. The goal was to collect information about the target species distributions and occurrences.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

We would like to thank Leah Ramsay, Jennifer Heron, Jerry Mitchell, Bianca Sawicz and Orville Dyer for all their help and instruction with this project. In addition we would like to thank Howie Richardson, Denis St-John, Neil Mathes and Sarah Bunge.

METHODS

Site Selection Transect sites were chosen one of three ways. They were chosen because they had: 1) been recommended by local butterfly experts, 2) they had appropriate habitat based on what we knew about the target species, or 3) because the target species had been found there in the past. Accessibility to each site also influenced site selection.

Butterfly Capture and ID We walked 5-10meters apart (unless otherwise stated) across the study area with aerial nets. We attempted to capture all seen. If a butterfly could not be identified immediately from memory, it was misted with water from a spray bottle to immobilize it. Butterflies were then identified using the Butterflies of British Columbia by J. Acorn and I. Sheldon, 2006 and Butterflies of British Columbia by Guppy and Shepard, 2001. When we were unsure of the identity of a butterfly we took pictures of our specimens to have a specialist confirm our ID. Jenny Heron and Dean Nicholson were the specialists most often consulted for confirmation. Voucher specimens were also collected when uncertain of ID. Voucher specimens were killed by either pinching the butterfly on the thorax or by placing the butterfly in a killing jar.

In four of the areas we also conducted an antelope brush survey that consisted of measuring basal diameter and distance between plants. The measurements are not reported out here but were passed on to H. Richardson for analysis.

Data Collection and Entry While walking the transect, information about the site was recorded onto a Butterfly 3

Collection Field Form designed to capture the information required for the Wildlife Species Inventory database. In addition all butterflies caught were recorded on either an Incidental Collection Form or the Butterfly Collection Field Form depending on the species—again set up for data capture into the Wildlife Species Inventory database. The target species were recorded on the Butterfly Collection Field Form and all other butterflies were recorded on the Incidental Collection Form. Total distance covered per site was calculated by measuring the distance of the transect and multiplying that distance by the number of people that walked the transect. The total number of person hours was calculated by timing how long it took to finish the transect and multiplying that by the number of people. All the data was then entered into an Excel spreadsheet.

RESULTS

Nineteen Behr’s Hairstreaks were found in three locations during targeted surveys of seven locations. It was found at the Okanagan Falls Landfill on Allandale Rd. , the southwest corner of Vaseux Lake and along 201 Rd. east of Okanagan Falls. This species was also found incidentally during another survey (for ) in South Kilpoola unit 4 (see map and Table 1). Details for the locations for the areas surveyed for Behr’s Hairstreak have been submitted to the Wildlife Species Inventory. The embedded table in Appendix A contains the fields collected.

Search Effort: There were seven sites visited over a four day period. A total distance of 57.1 km was searched over 43.3 person hours.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

Before going out in the field:  Contact local enthusiasts to find out when a species will be flying.  Have a list of sites where a species was previously sighted.  Access to detailed maps of the area with information concerning land tenure, broad ecosystem units and road access to facilitate planning.  Spend time researching the target species at the beginning of the field season.

Recommendations to improve data collection:  Improved storage methods of voucher specimen.  Pictures should be labelled and the number should be written down on the data collection form (e.g. a labelled line could be provided).  Ensure that the effort for each target species is high enough to provide strong data o Sample over the entire flight period o Sample numerous sites with appropriate habitat o Sample area with appropriate habitat where they have not yet been found
