Mormon Battalion and Tucson Presidio MORMON BATTALION AND TUCSON PRESIDIO Mexico broke off relations with the United States in March 1845 after the annexation of Texas. A Mexican attack on U.S. troops occupying disputed territory preceded a U.S. declaration of war on Mexico in May 1846. The Mormon Battalion served under General Kearny, commander of the Army of the West. He led his soldiers of "wilderness-worn dragoons" from Santa Fe in 1846, descended the Gila, and spent the next two months following the river's passage to the Colorado. They marched through the villages of the Gila Pimas, but completely bypassed Tubac and Tucson and avoided any confrontation with Mexican troops. The Mormon Battalion, a company of Latter Day Saints from the Midwest who volunteered for duty in order to prove their patriotism and diffuse the religious hatred of their neighbors, swung farther south and went through Tucson on its way to California. The Mormons were the first representatives of the U.S. government to meet the Mexican population of Arizona at a mescal distillery between the San Pedro and Santa Cruz valleys. There the tee-totaling Mormons met a sergeant and several soldiers from the Tucson presidio. The sergeant politely requested that the Mormons make a detour around Tucson. Several days of sparring followed as Tucson's veteran commander, Antonio Camadurán, attempted to persuade the battalion not to enter the community. When all threats and pleas for an armistice failed, Comadurán withdrew his outnumbered garrison to San Xavier. The result was a peaceful day of trading between the Mormons and the Mexican inhabitants of Tucson. The battalion lumbered into town on December 17. The residents of Tucson offered the soldiers food and water, and the soldiers responded by bartering clothing for the beans and flour they needed. .

    The Chronology of the Mormon Battalion A TIMELINE OF EVENTS SURROUNDING THE MARCH OF THE MORMON BATTALION Most students of Mormon history will recall that the story of the Mormon Battalion began during the early days of the Saints’ westward trek to the Rocky Mountains. Many will also associate the end of the Battalion’s march across the Southwest to California with the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill. However, the events leading up to the Mexican War and the dramatic results of that war on the history and geography of the United States are probably less well remembered. This chronology presents a combined timeline of LDS Church history, US history, the Mexican War, the march of the Mormon Battalion, and includes significant events following the mustering out of Battalion members. 1821 August 24 Mexico becomes independent of Spain after more than ten years of civil war. At the time, Mexico claims most of the western third of what would eventually be the continental United States, although it was sparsely settled except by Native Americans. The northern Mexican territories include Texas, Nuevo Mexico (New Mexico) and Alta California (Upper California). 1830 April 6 The Church of Jesus Christ is organized by Joseph Smith at Fayette, New York. 1836 March 2 Texas declares independence from Mexico, the result of an increasing number of American settlers who resent centralized control by the Mexican government. After several defeats at the hands of the Mexican Army, led by General Santa Anna, Sam Houston leads a surprise attack by the inexperienced Texian army against the Mexican army at San Jacinto, scoring a dramatic victory and capturing Santa Anna.

    Augustus Erastus Dodge: Substantiating a Family Legend by Grant Eckstein Prof. Richard Bennett Church History 342 Augustus Erastus Dodge: Substantiating a Family Legend The myth of Augustus Erastus Dodge is family apocrypha. Much is known about him in the family, yet almost none of it has been substantiated. He was a pioneer and he lived in Toquerville, Utah at the time of his death. Nearly all other details of the life of this enigmatic family hero are no more than rumor and hearsay. As part of an ongoing project to become familiar with and annotate the lives of long-lost relatives, I launched a research project to discover the real Augustus Erastus Dodge. Notable family lore asserts that he was a bodyguard for Joseph Smith and a stone mason on the Nauvoo and Manti temples. The march of the Mormon Battalion led him to what was then Cuided de los Angeles and he participated in the American acquisition of California. He was a lonely friend to countless Indians in Southern Utah; they in turned helped him escape from the war path of an angry tribe. He went to Toquerville after receiving forged documents supposedly written by Brigham Young and there became a fruit grower of regional renown. After three wives and countless occupations, Dodge eventually passed away in 1900. Despite the colorful imagery of his pioneer history, precious little of Dodge’s life is attributed to fact and most of it is legend. But is the legend of Augustus Erastus Dodge factual? What elements are true and which are likely inventions and modifications perpetuated through generations of retelling the story? It is the intention of this paper to prove that the Dodge legend can be verified both in its correct portions and its fallacies.

Perkins On 17 July1846, one day after Captain James Allen had mustered in the Mormon Battalion, U.S. Army of the West, Brigham Young called eighty- nine bishops1 to look after the wives and families of the Mormon Battalion.2 Among the group called were Ute Perkins (1816–1901), a thirty-year-old member of seven years, his uncles, William G. Perkins and John Vance, and his first cousin, Andrew H. Perkins. Until Nauvoo, the Church’s two general bishops, Bishop Newel K. Whitney in Kirtland and Bishop Edward Partridge in Missouri, bore as their major responsibility the challenge to care for the poor and needy. In Nauvoo, in addition to the general bishops, the Church initiated the prac- tice of assigning bishops to aid the poor within Nauvoo’s municipal wards— hence the beginnings of ward bishops. During the trek west, as the calling of these eighty-nine bishops shows, the commitment to calling local bishops to care for small membership groupings was underway and became enough of an established practice that in Utah it became standard Church administra- tive practice—a presiding bishopric at the general level and ward bishops at the local level. Therefore, study of the bishops’ work during the Winter Quarters period deserves historical attention, to which effort the following material contributes.3 Ute Perkins lived in a temporary Mormon encampment called Pleasant Valley, where his father Absalom was the branch president.

Wilson ii ABSTRACT Jack Santino, Advisor While Mormons were once the “black sheep” of Christianity, engaging in communal economic arrangements, polygamy, and other practices, they have, since the turn of the twentieth century, modernized, Americanized, and “Christianized.” While many of their doctrines still cause mainstream Christians to deny them entrance into the Christian fold, Mormons’ performance of Christianity marks them as not only Christian, but as perhaps the best Christians. At the annual Mormon Miracle Pageant in Manti, Utah, held to celebrate the origins of the Mormon founding, Evangelical counter- Mormons gather to distribute literature and attempt to dissuade pageant-goers from their Mormonism. The hugeness of the pageant and the smallness of the town displace Christianity as de facto center and make Mormonism the central religion. Cast to the periphery, counter-Mormons must attempt to reassert the centrality of Christianity. Counter-Mormons and Mormons also wrangle over control of terms. These “turf wars” over issues of doctrine are much more about power than doctrinal “purity”: who gets to authoritatively speak for Mormonism. Meanwhile, as Mormonism moves Christianward, this creates room for Mormon fundamentalism, as small groups of dissidents lay claim to Joseph Smith’s “original” Mormonism. Manti is home of the True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days, a group that broke away from the Mormon Church in 1994 and considers the mainstream church apostate, offering a challenge to its dominance in this time and place.
