Welcome to the 44th Annual 2014-2015 Area Emmy® Awards Gala. Each year the gala is a re-imagined tour de force that depends on the organization and artistry of the Emmy® Event Committee and dozens of skilled craftspeople. Emmy® Event Committee Chair Karen Sutton leads the way tonight from the new SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco. The Emmy® award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sci- ences (NATAS). This year a record number of entries were received by our chapter in 67 categories; 761 English and 135 Spanish. Tonight the gala originates from what may be our most stylish venue to date. It’s certainly the jazziest. Have fun, and the best of luck. I hope that your nomination is transformed into Emmy® gold!

The San Francisco/Northern California Chapter annually honors outstanding individual, news and program achievements in Northern California, Hawaii and Reno. The purpose of conferring the coveted Emmy® statuette is to provide incentive for continuing outstanding individual and pro- duction achievements within the television industry. The Emmy® Awards program is also a means of focusing public attention upon the multi-talented individuals who comprise this business and to honor them. There can be one award, more than one award or no award pre- sented in each category.

This was a record year with 896 entries (761 English and 135 Spanish) submitted in 67 categories from the calendar year 2014, for Emmy® award consideration. All entries were submitted and uploaded through Emmy® Express and then judged online by the following NATAS chapters: /Midwest; Mid-Atlantic (Philadel- phia); Northwest (Seattle); and Suncoast (). At least five peers viewed and scored each entry. English and Spanish entries were judged separately. The online programs were scored for content, creativity, and execution (1 to 10 points), for a possible total of 30 points. Craft categories were judged on creativity and execution only, for a possible 20 points. After scoring all the entries in the category, the judge certified his or her scores and the ballot was sent directly to Spalding and Company, our accounting firm for processing.

A tabulated sheet representing each category, with separate entries for English and Spanish-but not identified-was presented to the Awards Committee. The committee determined a cut-off in each category and entries above that score were considered nominees. The committee then selected the Emmy® recipients by highest scores. The Awards Committee members made these selections without knowing which entries or categories were being considered. The nominations were announced May 6, 2015 on the Internet. 230 English and 57 Spanish entries were nominated with 873 certificates being handed out to 517 individuals. Tonight, we recognize the top scores of Emmy® award excellence.

Congratulations, 2015 Emmy® nominees from your gala committee. This is a reminder of the changes we made two years ago that have helped to streamline the show.

1. Each nominee has submitted a spokesperson that is designated to give a speech, should that nominee receive an award. 2. When the Presenter reads the award recipient, they will also read the name of that spokesperson. But if that spokesperson is not available to come onto the stage, other parties may come onto the stage to receive the statuette in their place. 3. In the event that no spokesperson was submitted with the nomination, then the Presenters will simply announce the Award Recipient and NO ONE will be permitted on the stage for that category. 4. The spokesperson should come up onto the stage using the stairs on the right or left. 5. Once on the stage, the spokesperson will receive a temporary statuette. 6. The spokesperson is then welcome to approach the microphone and give their speech. 7. Other parties are welcome to join the spokesperson on the stage...but they will not be permitted to give a speech. 8. All speeches are limited to 30 seconds. 9. If you are not the designated spokesperson, or you have al- ready given a speech, you will not be permitted to give a speech and will be disappointed to find, that the microphone will not be active. 10. After receiving the award statuette, parties will be escorted backstage to deposit the temporary statuette, sign paperwork, and receive your engraved Emmy® statuette.

11. When you are given your Emmy ® statuette backstage, you will also be handed an ID card, take this ID card to the Red Carpet area where the Photographer will take your picture and you can give a personal interview.

Presenter: Stan Burford Former Executive Producer KGO ABC 7 Trafficman, KGO Radio Silver Circle class of 2000 Former NATAS Chapter President

The Governors’ Award is the highest Award a local chapter can bestow. It is for recognition of achievements by individuals, organizations or companies which do not fall within the structure of the Chapter’s regional Area Awards. Historically, Board of Governors’ Awards are for truly outstanding and unique accomplishments, or for achivements of some duration and durability.

Over a span of 43 years at ABC7 News, David Louie has covered some of the biggest stories in the Bay Area and Northern California, including earthquakes, floods, the kidnap of heiress Patty Hearst, the disappearance of an entire bus of school children in Chowchilla, and the outbreak of SARS and toxic shock syndrome. He has been a reporter, an anchor, an assistant news director, a bureau chief and a business editor, covering the rise of Silicon Valley. His work has been recognized with four Emmy® awards.

- 40 - David joined KGO-TV in 1972 right out of Northwestern University’s school. However, his TV career began at the tender age of five when he appeared for eight years on a weekly public affairs show on the NBC affiliate in Cleve- land. He worked at two Cleveland and two Chicago TV stations during his undergraduate years. He was part of the KGO-TV “News Scene” team to report from China in 1979, a first for a local TV station, one year after normaliza- tion of relations with the U.S. In 1976, he was elected to the Board of Governors of the San Francisco/Northern California Chapter of NATAS, serving as local awards chair, national trustee and a member of the national awards committee. In 1990, David became a NATAS officer, elected first as Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Board, the first minority to hold that post. As chairman, he helped to create a $20,000 NATAS scholarship, promoted media literacy, and led profes- sional delegations to Asia and Europe. His passion to encourage more minorities to enter TV and to assist with their skills development led to leadership roles in the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA), serving as local chapter president and then national president. He currently serves on the board of the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and its foundation. He has mentored many young professionals and students through the years and has volunteered for many community groups and boards. He is also an avid photographer and foodie.
