Frick Award Online Balloting Begins Tomorrow and Continues Through Sept. 30 OAKLAND, Calif. – No baseball broadcaster was more decisive—or distinctive—in the big moment than the Oakland A’s late, great Bill King. Now, it’s time for his legions of ardent supporters to be just as decisive in voting him into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Starting tomorrow, fans of the legendary A’s announcer can cast their online ballot for a man who is generally regarded as the greatest broadcaster in Bay Area history when the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Facebook site is activated for 2012 Ford C. Frick Award voting during the month of September. King, who passed away at the age of 78 in 2005, was the leading national vote-getter in fan balloting for the Frick Award in both 2005 and 2006. Following his death, the A’s permanently named their Coliseum broadcast facilities the “Bill King Broadcast Booth” after the team’s revered former voice. Online voting for fan selections for the award will begin at 7 a.m. PDT tomorrow, Sept. 1, at the Hall of Fame’s Facebook site, www.facebook.com/baseballhall, and conclude at 2 p.m. PDT Sept. 30. The top three fan selections from votes tallied at the site during September will appear on the final 10-name ballot for the award.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, August 21, 2017 * The Boston Globe The pick here is Andrew Benintendi over Aaron Judge Dan Shaughnessy Aaron Judge vs. Andrew Benintendi. Forget 2017 American League Rookie of the Year. I’m asking . which guy would you rather have on your team for the next 15 seasons? We love these Yankee-Red Sox mano-a-manos. It’s as old as the rivalry itself. Joe DiMagggio came to the bigs in 1936. Ted Williams burst on the scene three years later. Throughout the 1940s, it was a raging argument. We were even led to believe that the respective owners of the Sox and Yankees once made a late-night swap while in a drunken haze. The alleged trade was called off by dawn’s early light. Remember when the Sox had Carlton Fisk and the Yanks had Thurman Munson? New York’s grumpy catcher was a league MVP before his career was tragically cut short when he crashed his plane in 1979. Fisk went on to become a Hall of Famer. Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs were rivals of sorts in the 1980s and who can forget those early years of this new century when Nomar Garciaparra vs. Derek Jeter was a real debate. Now we have Judge and Benintendi. Big Poison and Little Poison. It’s 6 feet 7 inches and 282 pounds vs. 5-10 and 170. It’s not about Rookie of the Year anymore. Even though he is playing as badly as anyone can play at the moment, Judge pretty much retired the rookie trophy with his ridiculous first half.

Stanford Continuing Studies Course Syllabus Spring 2018 Baseball: Inside America’s Game BAS 101 Mondays, 7:00–8:50 pm 9 weeks, April 9 – June11 (no class May 28) Instructor: Gary Cavalli Course Summary This course is for anyone who has ever loved, played, or been intrigued by our national pastime. As every fan knows, baseball is much more than a game. The most traditional, numbers-oriented and nostalgia-inducing of our major sports, it offers a reprieve from the fast-moving digital world, a fantasyland for statisticians, an instrument for social change, heroes to admire and memories to last a lifetime. During this 9-week course, students will spend time in the company of baseball insiders, taking an informative, in-depth, and entertaining look at America's game. Topics will include how to build a team, a fan base and a new ballpark; scouting vs. analytics; the business of baseball; the challenges of the college game; representing players and negotiating with teams; and the real-life MLB experiences of a star player, veteran umpire, legendary scout, beat writer and columnist. Grade Options and Requirements No Grade Requested (NGR) Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) Students must attend at least 7 of the 9 classes to receive credit. Weekly Course Outline April 9 – "Baseball’s Hot Button Issues” – Bruce Jenkins, San Francisco Chronicle columnist and former Giants/A's beat writer April 16 – “College Baseball: Challenges and Opportunities" David Esquer, Head baseball coach at Stanford, former head coach at Cal April 23 – "The Business of Baseball" –

NBC History 5 On behalf of the NBC Baseball Foundation Board of Directors, I’d like to thank you for attending today’s game and sharing in this great tradition. It is my honor to serve as Chairman of this organization and to see 2016 Graduate of the Year 6-7 firsthand how the efforts of the Board have made this event stronger than ever. As a private, non-profit organization, we are dedicated to carry-on Hap Dumont’s original vision; one that provides quality baseball Former Graduates of the Year 8-9 in a family setting. The National Baseball Congress State Tournament was started in 1931 by Hap Dumont. It was originally 2016 League Affiliates 10 played on Island Park in the middle of the Arkansas River. In 1935, Hap added what has become our treasured annual event, the NBC World Series. Since then, the World Series has seen a few changes. The bats were wood, then switched to aluminum, then back to wood. The ownership of the tournament has 2016 NBC Award Sponsors 11 changed from private to public and now private. The boxcars outside the right field fence where kids used to watch the games are gone and the concourse was added.
