Pathways Newsletter and Program Guide Spring/Summer 2021 www.buckscounty.org 2 Commissioners’ Message Spring 2021 A MESSAGE FROM THE BUCKS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is appreciation of even the simplest pleasures in life: the freedom to explore new places, to be out in the fresh air and to exercise in the great outdoors. When the coronavirus began spreading across our region last spring, shuttering our workplaces, our schools, our stores and our social gathering spots, many of us retreated like caterpillars into cocoons, unwilling to emerge for weeks. Do you remember the eerie quiet of those first few days and weeks of our statewide shutdown? With most venues closed, we hunkered down inside our homes, glued to computers and TVs for news of the worsening pandemic. As the case counts rose unabated, some of us lost livelihoods. Some of us lost friends and loved ones. We became stressed and irritable, anxious and argumentative. But as the weather warmed and the infections and deaths plateaued, we began to reclaim some things we had lost as they again became available to us. Among the first was the use of our wonderful system of county parks. And no wonder. In our parks, distancing was easier than in confined spaces. The warming, open air made transmission of the virus less likely, and the chance to breathe free and to exercise was the perfect elixir to the stresses and anxieties of COVID. There were days when our biggest challenge was finding enough places to park as people streamed into our parklands after we unlocked the gates last April 20, almost a month after shutting them down. Now in its 68th year, our Bucks County Parks and Recreation Department was wonderfully equipped to meet our needs, and remains so as we continue to step out of the pandemic’s shadow. With eight county parks, an assortment of historical sites, trails, campsites, nature centers, pools and tennis courts, there is no shortage of things to do and see. With more than 9,000 acres of land for recreational activities, ours is the third-largest county parks operation in Pennsylvania. Our programming is beginning to return, we are hiring for warm-weather seasonal work, and we look forward to seeing more of you once again hiking our trails, kayaking our lakes, or even swinging a fairway iron at our county-owned Oxford Valley Golf Course. Please browse this guide for schedules of activities, information about rentals of cabins, campsites, pavilions, and boats; tennis offerings at Core Creek Park and Frosty Hollow Tennis Center; swimming at Oxford Valley Pool; and a range of offerings at our nature centers. At the same time, we encourage everyone to be mindful that COVID-19 is still out there, and still a danger to the many among us who have yet to be vaccinated. Please see the outdoor etiquette tips on page 5 to help protect yourself and others against the spread of the virus in our parks. In closing, we would be remiss if we did not recognize a man who is in great measure responsible for the excellence of our parks system. William Mitchell, our longtime Executive Director of Parks and Recreation, is retiring this April after almost 32 years at the helm. In appreciation for Bill’s faithful service to our county and its parks system, we have named our Park Administration Building in his honor. This is only appropriate, as the name Bill Mitchell has become synonymous with quality parks in Bucks County. Please join us in wishing Bill much happiness in the years to come. 2021 Board of County Commissioners Diane M. Ellis-Marseglia, LCSW, Chair Robert J.
