  • Pathways Newsletter
Pathways Newsletter and Program Guide Spring/Summer 2021 www.buckscounty.org 2 Commissioners’ Message Spring 2021 A MESSAGE FROM THE BUCKS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is appreciation of even the simplest pleasures in life: the freedom to explore new places, to be out in the fresh air and to exercise in the great outdoors. When the coronavirus began spreading across our region last spring, shuttering our workplaces, our schools, our stores and our social gathering spots, many of us retreated like caterpillars into cocoons, unwilling to emerge for weeks. Do you remember the eerie quiet of those first few days and weeks of our statewide shutdown? With most venues closed, we hunkered down inside our homes, glued to computers and TVs for news of the worsening pandemic. As the case counts rose unabated, some of us lost livelihoods. Some of us lost friends and loved ones. We became stressed and irritable, anxious and argumentative. But as the weather warmed and the infections and deaths plateaued, we began to reclaim some things we had lost as they again became available to us. Among the first was the use of our wonderful system of county parks. And no wonder. In our parks, distancing was easier than in confined spaces. The warming, open air made transmission of the virus less likely, and the chance to breathe free and to exercise was the perfect elixir to the stresses and anxieties of COVID. There were days when our biggest challenge was finding enough places to park as people streamed into our parklands after we unlocked the gates last April 20, almost a month after shutting them down.
