GENERAL NOTES LOGAN TURNER PRIZE THIS prize was founded by the late Dr. Logan Turner to commemorate his editorship of the Journal. The value of the prize is £100 and the subject is THE PLACE AND MANAGEMENT OF TRACHEOSTOMY IN RESPIRATORY INSUFFICIENCY This prize is open to British Medical Graduates. The Essay should be not less than 10,000 words and should be sent to the Editor by June ist, i960. BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF OTOLARYNGOLOGISTS POLIOMYELITIS INOCULATION AND THE REMOVAL OF TONSILS AND ADENOIDS The Council recommends that children should be inoculated against poliomyelitis before the removal of tonsils and adenoids. As a safeguard the ear, nose and throat specialist should ascertain from the parent whether the child has received its second inoculation. It is appreciated that no direct pressure can be brought to bear on parents if they do not wish to have their child inoculated and they can only be warned of the possible risks. NORTH OF ENGLAND OTOLARYNGOLOGICAL SOCIETY "THE GEORGE SEED MEMORIAL PRIZE" (previously known as the "Fifty Guinea Prize") will be awarded in i960 for an Original Paper on work in Oto- laryngology carried out in the North of England. The investigation must have been carried out during the tenure of a post as senior registrar, house officer, registrar or clinical assistant. THE INSTITUTE OF LARYNGOLOGY AND OTOLOGY 330-332 GRAY'S INN ROAD, LONDON, W.C.I. Professor F. C. Ormerod vacated the Chair of Laryngology and Otology in the University of London on the 30th September, 1959, and has been elected Professor Emeritus by the Senate. The University has not for the time being made a new appointment to the Chair. Professor Ormerod has been appointed Director of Research at the Institute and in addition he will continue, in collaboration with the Dean, to be concerned with the organization and co-ordination of the teaching of students. The teach- ing arrangements generally will be carried on as at present. The post of Reader in Otology has been advertised and will shortly be rilled.
