PRESIDENT’S & CEO’S REPORT

We have pleasure in submitting this report to members on Swimming Queensland‟s activities for the 2008/09 financial year.

2008 Beijing Olympic Games

The performance of the Queensland contingent of swimmers at the Beijing Olympics was simply sensational – so great in fact that, if classified as a nation, Queensland would have finished in second place on the swimming medal table.

At the forefront of our swimmers‟ many exceptional accomplishments at Beijing was Stephanie Rice‟s success in the 200m and 400m Individual Medley events in world record time. Stephanie underlined her amazing talent and versatility by linking with fellow Queenslanders Bronte Barratt, Linda Mackenzie and Kylie Palmer to win the 4 x 200m relay. Rated an outside chance of winning a minor medal, Stephanie, Bronte, Linda and Kylie won decisively, smashing the world record by a massive 6 seconds, and breaking the USA‟s stranglehold on the event, in which it had never been defeated at an Olympic Games. In recognition of her stunning achievements, Stephanie was chosen to carry the Australian flag in the closing ceremony.

Libby Trickett won gold medals in the 100m Butterfly and 4 x 100m Medley Relay, in which she shared glory with , and . Leisel, who relocated to Victoria leading up to the Games, also won the 100m and finished second in the 200m Breaststroke, while Jessicah won bronze medals in the 100m Butterfly and 200m Butterfly.

Brenton Rickard and Andrew Lauterstein both won medals in individual events – with Brenton taking second place in the 200m Breaststroke and Andrew winning the bronze medal in the 100m Butterfly. They were also members of the Australian quartet that finished second in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay. Cate Campbell won bronze medals in the 50m Freestyle and 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay.

Other medal winners were , Nick Ffrost, , Tarnee White, Leith Brodie, and .

Queensland coaches on the Australian team were Michael Bohl, Matthew Brown, Stephan Widmer, Ken Wood, Shannon Rollason, and Vince Raleigh. Technical Official Julie McGinley officiated at the open water swimming events.

2008 Beijing Paralympic Games

Three Queensland swimmers won medals at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Marayke Jonkers was the silver medallist in the 150m Individual Medley SM4, while Michael Anderson and Blake Cochrane achieved the same result in the 100m S10 and 100m Breaststroke SB7, respectively.

2009 World Open Water Championships Trials

At the Australian Open Water Championships, five of the eight-member team selected for the 2009 World Championships were from Queensland. John Rodgers was selected as a coach on the team.

2

2009 World Championships Trials

Queensland‟s strong representation on national teams continued following another dominant performance by our swimmers at the 2009 World Championships Trials in . Both the women‟s and men‟s trophies were won by Queensland. For the fourth year running, Queensland swimmers and coaches made up half of the team selected from the annual trials – on this occasion for the 2009 World Championships in Rome.

2009 Australian Age Championships

The 2009 Australian Age Championships produced a number of momentous results for Queensland: for the 10th consecutive year Queensland won the W.B. Phillips trophy as champion State; in winning the trophy, Queensland, for the first time, scored more points than all the other States combined, and markedly so; and every Olympian Christian Sprenger receiving the Kieran Shield for Champion State (men’s) from SAL one of the eight State relays was won by a Queensland President David Urquhart at the 2009 Australian team – an unprecedented feat – six of which were swum in Swimming Championships Australian record time.

3

Mikkayla Maselli-Sheridan won 10 individual medals, nine of which were gold, while Regan Leong claimed seven individual gold medals. Regan also won two gold medals in relay events.

For the second year running and for the third time in the past five years, Pro-Ma Miami was the Premier Club. St Peters Western finished runner-up.

At the Open Water section of the Championships, five events were won by Queensland swimmers.

2008 Zoggs Queensland Championships

The 2008 Zoggs Queensland Championships attracted 5,497 nominations from 1,665 swimmers from 164 clubs/teams for individual events.

Mikkayla Maselli-Sheridan was named Swimmer of the Meet; Jayden Hadler, Age Swimmer of the Meet; Regan Leong, Country Swimmer of the Meet; and Nerice Holland and Brendan Hall were joint winners of the SWD Swimmer of the Meet award. St Peters Western was the champion club.

Athlete and Coach Development

The major athlete and coach development activity undertaken during the past year was the London Calling camp at the Gold Coast. Aimed at the 2012 Olympic Games, the one-week camp hosted 90 emerging swimmers and 20 coaches. Another major activity was a trip to Shanghai for members of the Gold and Silver Squads.

Regional camps were conducted at Townsville and Toowoomba for the Junior Development and Bronze Squads, while a team of Bronze Squad members competed at a meet in Gladstone, and a 40-member team defeated Victoria at Caloundra.

Financial support was provided to several swimmers to help them access competition. This included regional Flippers and Bronze Squad swimmers wishing to compete at the Queensland Short Course Championships, talented Swimmers with a Disability, and leading open water swimmers.

A new initiative for junior swimmers saw 58 swimmers selected from the Junior Excellence Program (JX) participate in an offshoot of JX called Developing Medley Excellence. Guest speakers at the inaugural assembly of the group were Stephanie Rice and Michael Bohl.

4

Swimming Queensland‟s 2008/09 squads comprised 435 swimmers, representing every region.

Coach education courses were delivered to 350 participants at various locations. The Mentor Coach Program assisted six emerging coaches to gain invaluable experience alongside leading Queensland coaches. This program was complemented by a new mentoring initiative successfully trialled at the Australian Age Championships where Queensland coaches at the meet with a small number of swimmers under their care were invited to spend their spare time observing and assisting selected senior coaches.

Technical Official Development

Mentoring continued as a top priority in the development of Technical Officials. Formal assessor and mentoring training was delivered to 34 Technical Officials from around the State. Mentoring of regional officials was once again undertaken at the Queensland Championships, and, under a reciprocal arrangement with Swimming NSW, two open water officials gained valuable experience at the NSW Open Water Swimming Championships. Two Queensland officials attended an Assessor and Trainer workshop conducted by Swimming Australia in conjunction with the Duel in the Pool Meet held in Canberra, and another four officials participated in a Swimming Australia FINA Open Water Swimming clinic.

A workshop for Starters, both theoretical and practical, was conducted in Brisbane for 11 Starters from five regions.

Membership Development

New membership development initiatives implemented during the year were the McDonald‟s Participation and Improvement Programs, a fun book tailored for learn-to-swim children, and novelty swim meets in swim schools called Macca‟s Mini Meets. The Mini Meets are offered to swim schools as a great way to give added value to their students by introducing them to the joy of racing in the pool. They are also seen as a vehicle for encouraging children to try competitive swimming when they finish their swim school tuition.

The Participation and Improvement Programs were created to help clubs recognise and reward swimmers who achieve targets set by their club based on participation in club activities and on personal improvement. To support the programs, major prizes were supplied by McDonald‟s and Retravision for swimmers and their coaches and clubs.

Established programs were continued. Approximately 6,500 kits were distributed to new swimming members to welcome them to club swimming; 1,000 Swim Star caps were supplied to clubs to enable them to give recognition to swimmers for exemplifying their clubs‟ values; clinics for swimmers with a disability were held at Gladstone, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Townsville; prizes, including a school visit by Jessicah Schipper, and more than 10,000 certificates were supplied to Primary School swimming; and several thousand participation ribbons were given to clubs for swim meets and club championships.

3,150 junior swimmers qualified for the Junior Excellence Program (JX), which was conceived and developed in Queensland and then transformed into a national scheme. Pool sessions for JX children featuring elite swimmers and coaches were conducted in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Maroochydore, Toowoomba, Nerang, Robina, Goodna, and Brisbane.

Awards

The long list of people from the Swimming Queensland community recognised by the Sports Federation of Queensland, now named Q Sport, increased sharply with the inclusion of Stephanie Rice (Sports Star of the Year), Emily Seebohm (Junior Sports Star of the Year), Michael Bohl (Coach of the Year), and Linda Mackenzie, Kylie Palmer, Bronte Barratt and Stephanie Rice (Team of the Year). Since the inception of the awards in 1995, there have been 27 winners from swimming – well in excess of any other sport.

Swimming Australia Awards were presented to Stephanie Rice (Telstra Swimmer of the Year), Lisbeth Trickett (Telstra People‟s Choice Swimmer of the Year), and Michael Bohl (Telstra Coach of the Year). Stephanie‟s spectacular performances at the Beijing Olympics earned her the title of Female World Swimmer of the Year.

Swimming Queensland Hall of Fame inductees were Arch Steinbeck OBE, David Carter (posthumously), Jeff Hardy OAM, and Scott Volkers. Life Membership was conferred on coach Peter Diamond, and Awards of Excellence were presented to Guy Bagot LVO (GC), Susan Brown (CQ), Ted Curtis (BSA), Alan Johnston (NQ), Wayne Sexton (FNQ), Michele Watson (WB), Bob Wharton (DD), and to Nicole Yates (posthumously), a much-loved and respected staff member of Swimming Queensland who tragically passed away in December 2008.

John Keppie was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the 2008 Queen‟s Birthday Honours List for his profound contribution to the sport of swimming in Australia, both as an administrator and as a Technical Official.

Acknowledgements

In concluding our report, we refer again to the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the phenomenal accomplishments of Queensland swimmers at those Games. As well as confirming the greatness of our swimmers in the most compelling style, the Beijing success reflects enormous credit on every person and organisation supporting the sport of swimming in this State. Sporting history has proven time and time again that success at the highest level of competition relies on a massive team effort from large numbers of people dedicated to helping others to succeed. Most of these servants of sport contentedly work out of sight behind the scenes, humbly unaware of just how vital their individual contribution is.

On behalf of Swimming Queensland and the swimmers and coaches who represented their State and country with such great distinction at Beijing, we salute you, we thank you, and we congratulate you. As we direct our focus towards 2012, we look forward to continuing to work with you to ensure that Queensland remains the strongest swimming province in the world.

Finally, we thank Mrs Margaret Pugh OAM for the enormous contribution she made to the sport of swimming in Queensland over the two decades that she was a member of the Swimming Queensland Board. Margaret, who served as President of Swimming Queensland from 2002 to 2008, was appointed to the Board of Swimming Australia in September last year.

TREASURER’S REPORT

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I submit the Treasurer‟s Annual Report, together with the audited Annual Financial Report, for the year ended 30 April 2009.

An operating surplus of $15,717 was recorded by the Association in the 2008/09 financial year. Total Accumulated Funds now stand at $497,832.

Total revenue for the year was $1.48m, up from $1.351m in 2007/8. Similarly, total expenditure increased from $1.355m last year to $1.464m. As was the case in 2007/8, these increases were largely due to continued growth in Swimming Queensland‟s sponsorship income. It also reflects our closer working ties with the Queensland Academy of Sport and improved returns on our cash investments.

The financial status of the Association is excellent, with a strong balance sheet and a healthy level of liquidity.

As I am now ineligible to stand for re-election to the Swimming Queensland Board at this year‟s Annual General Meeting, having served three consecutive terms under the new constitution adopted in 2002, this will be my last report as Treasurer. I have enjoyed the role and responsibility a great deal and am pleased that I can step down knowing that the Association is in a financially robust state and, as reflected in this year‟s audit report, is operating with sound accounting practices and procedures.

Assisting me on the Finance Sub-Committee over the past year were Mrs Margaret Pugh OAM, Mr John Keppie OAM, Mrs Suellen Hardie, Dr Simon Hooton, Mr Joe Dixon, and Mr Jeremy Turner. I express my sincere appreciation to each of them and to Swimming Queensland‟s staff for their help and comradeship.

Peter Plumridge Treasurer

VALE In 2008-2009, Swimming Queensland lost members Thelma Osborn (SQ Life Member), and John Carew (SQ & SAL Life Member) each of whom made significant contributions to our sport.

The sympathy of Swimming Queensland goes to the families and friends of those no longer with us.

REGIONAL REPORTS

BRISBANE SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC.

President: Terry Major Secretary: Jill Ryan

Congratulations to all Technical Officials, Swimmers, Coaches, Volunteers and Parents on another successful Brisbane Swimming Association season.

The Brisbane Swimming Association would like to acknowledge the great input of our Sponsors; McDonald's Family Restaurants Brisbane and Vorgee. These sponsors go above and beyond expectations to support the Association and its members. Representatives from both of these organisations are a constant presence at our meets and clinics. Mrs. Erica Clydsdale, Marketing Manager for McDonalds, has provided even more for us this season, taking on the task of providing the Officials and Volunteers with treats for lunch and morning/afternoon teas at meets, and has also provided a coffee machine that has proved to be extremely popular. This coupled with the great merchandise provided for the Teams and Clinics provides great rewards for the swimmers.

Mr. John Vorgias, Mrs. Leigh Dempsey-McCoy and Quintin McCoy are constantly in attendance on the gate at our meets, helping the ladies and displaying merchandise. John also supplies the Association with wonderful merchandise for our Brisbane merchandising shop, Torpedos teams and also donates regularly as prizes.

Thanks also to Retravision who also helped us out with prize vouchers for the Officials and Timekeepers draws throughout swim meets. This is a great initiative which we hope they will continue.

The Competition program this season featured one less meet but that only provided us with more enthusiastic swimmers. All meets were well supported. Closing of some of the meets to Brisbane Swimmers only allowed the meets to run to a better time line.

The Divisional Competition again proved to be hotly contested. The Premier Division was taken out by Brothers Swimming Club followed by Duncan swim Demons. The First Division won by Clayfield Aquatics from Redlands Swimming Club. Honours in the Second Division fell to Logan Aquatics from Jamboree Heights. The competition in this division was very close with second to fifth only separated by eight points. Division Three saw Newmarket Racers win from Woogaroo Swimming Club. The Fourth Division was topped by Dunlop Park Swimming Club, second was Lowood and District Swimming Club. Grammar Sports won Division Five in another close finish with Boondall Chermside. Congratulations to all Clubs, Swimmers and Coaches for their support of our competition. It is particularly pleasing to see the Clubs that joined the Brisbane Association more recently featuring so well.

The Brisbane Swimming Association Presentation Day was again held at Brisbane City Hall. This is proving to be a very popular occasion with Swimming Award Winners, Parents, Club Award Winners, Coaches, Officials and Volunteers coming together to celebrate the successes of the season. It is also an opportunity for all to meet our wonderful sponsors and give them the thanks they deserve. The Lord Mayor's representative was Councillor Miss. Krista Adams. The day was very ably organised by Mrs. Gayle Black. During the Presentation a cheque for $2,000 was presented to Mr. Rod Chiapello for the Ronald McDonald House Fund.

Thanks must go to the members of the Management Committee who have worked tirelessly throughout the season. It is exciting to have so many ideas to work from but we all have the one purpose and that is to provide the swimmers in the Brisbane Swimming Association with the best quality competition and opportunities for developing in this great sport.

Thanks to Messrs. Col Carter, David Gregory, Mark Ziviani, Fred Goddard, John Whitlock and Jeff West and Mesdames Maria Gregory, Jill Ryan and Gayle Black. Mr. Col Carter has been kept busy in his role of Deputy President, ensuring that the wheels continue to turn in my absence and providing me with valuable support throughout the season. Mrs. Maria Gregory has kept a watchful and diligent eye on the finances, and Registrar Mrs. Gayle Black has kept a close eye on memberships and in partnership with Mrs. Margaret Squires she has also maintained the front gate for all meets. Thank you ladies.

This season has seen Mr. Mark Ziviani complete the Strategic Plan, which is a great asset to the Association. Mr. David Gregory has worked closely with Mr. Forno over the season to provide Technical Officials for meets. He has also taken on the role of Risk Management Officer. Mr. Fred Goddard has provided a second voice in the Open Water arena and organised and managed the Team for the N.S. W. Open Water Championships.

Two members who have not nominated for the Management again are Mr. Jeff West and Mr. John Whitlock. Both have been members of the Management for several years. Mr. West joined us to provide the bridge between Ipswich and Brisbane in the early days of the amalgamation of the two Associations. His support and advice has been invaluable. Mr. Whitlock has also been a valued member who can be relied upon to give clear direction and advice. We thank them both for their diligence in supporting the Association.

The Management is also supported by the Sub-Committees and we must thank members of these committees for their input and support. Our Technical Manager duties this season have been overseen by Mr. Glenn Forno. We thank him for organising the Technical Officials for all BSA meets and for the Club meets; a huge job, well done. He was the well deserved recipient of the Official of the Year Award.

We must thank our Records Steward, Mrs. Kate Forno who has done an impressive job of keeping the records up to date.

Thanks go to our parent body for their support and guidance over the season, in particular, we thank Swimming Queensland President Mr. John Keppie and C.E.O. Mr. Kevin Hasemann, who have made themselves available to meet with the President and Committee. Our thanks go to our Administration Officer, Mrs. Trudee Stafford, for her work over the season. We also offer our congratulations on her recent marriage.

SWIMMING GOLD COAST

President: Tiana Van Burck Secretary: Diane Daw

As I sit here and revise the last six years I see a Region that has not only come together, but a Region that has come of age. Thank you all for your support over the six years and to those volunteers filling the various important positions of the new season; you will continue to take the Region forward.

Our swimming numbers have remained viable and from those swimmers many World, Olympic, Age, State and Regional Champions have emerged. With our very important sponsorship from McDonald‟s the Region has been able to give swimmers the advantage of competing locally and interstate, as well as attend the many camps provided by the Region.

24

The format of development over the past years has changed from the once Junior Development to concentrating on ensuring the younger swimmers known as JX to have the opportunities to emerge into the wider more challenging areas of swimming.

Our Regional Relay teams competing at State titles continue to have success, with our younger age Groups taking out the State titles, our seniors winning the Open Age Freestyle Relay for the last 4 years. The Regional Swimmers proudly swimming with their McDonald‟s caps endorsing the Region‟s most significant sponsorship. Clearly the Region‟s sponsorship of McDonald‟s is noted each year, when attending the Twin Towns Meet.

With this continued sponsorship, the Region over the past 2 seasons has been able to return funds to the Clubs from Gold Coast Championships, to assist the finances of the swimmers. This season the Region was able to pay the pool entry fees, of swimmers, attending the Gold Coast Championships. This action, the Region will endeavour to keep in place and include the Short Course Meet in August.

I have worked with some remarkable people all giving more than what their positions equate. I have to first thank Sue Larsen who was my first secretary, who with boundless energy gave the Region extended boundaries and moved us forward at a rapid and fruitful pace. Diane Daw took over this demanding position, spending endless hours not only at meetings, but driving miles to ensure the smooth organisation of the Region and the many carnivals, the Region holds each season. Diane extended herself even further by taking on the role of operating and maintaining our timing equipment. Diane took on the role of teaching those enthusiastic parents who wanted to be involved in this vital area of officiating at our many Carnivals. Diane now has a band of parents who help operate the computers and timing equipment at the 30 plus swim meets the Region is involved in administering each season.

The treasury position being a very involved and accurate area was headed by Norm Fyffe who with wonderful accounting ability, put the region on the straight and narrow ensuring the region‟s books were always up to date and accountable. Michelle Sabotic then took over this daunting position keeping the Region on the straight and narrow ensuring we had money to spend on our many swimmers and their programmes of development, as well as keeping the Region well equipped.

Thank you to Mandy Savage, who was not only Registrar of the region but also Race Secretary, not only ensuring the Regional Meets were accounted for correctly, but the many Regional Club meets, Mandy formatted together the meets in the various Meet Manager files, plus sending the programme files to the many clubs in Queensland and N.S.W.

Thank you to a remarkable man called Bruce Welch. Bruce gave so much to Gold Coast Region ensuring there were always sufficient officials to attend the many meets. Bruce taught us all so much about swimming and his prodgie Karen McLeod now a Fina referee has a large band of many accomplished officials to attend the high demand of meets during a hectic season. Thank you to all officials who give up their valuable week-ends to ensure meets, whether they are a Regional “A” qualifying or Junior 12 and under meet, are administered successfully.

To the many parents who became involved with Junior Development programmes, took Swimmers on camps or just gave up their weekends at an SQ or Regional Development program, these would never have happened without your dedication to swimming. This programme is only going to enlarge with a further increase in demand of parent time.

McDonald‟s have become a big part of the Region‟s development. Thank you to McDonald‟s for its continued sponsorship over the past five years. McDonald‟s has ensured the evolvement of many of the Junior Development programmes with its continued sponsorship. McDonald‟s has supplied the Region with uniforms, tents, sponsorship of our major

25

Carnivals, sponsored the successful Regional teams at Qld Championships, Patron‟s Shield and the Twin Town Meets. The swimmers have received copious sponsorship from drink bottles, to vouchers, towels and swimming bags. The Region says thank you, in the most positive way and asks that the sponsorship continues for many years to come, to ensure the growth of swimming for the youth of the Gold Coast.

Thank you to Peta-Kaye Croft and Stephen Ciobo who have given generously in printing our very large programmes for the Regional Meets. Their generosity has meant that vital money from the sale of these programmes goes back into the many swimming and community programmes the Region supplies.

Finally thank you everyone who has made Swimming Gold Coast the success it is today.

DARLING DOWNS SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC.

President: David Sondergeld Secretary: David White

It is with pleasure that I present this report regarding the progress of the DDRSA over the past twelve months. It has been a busy season. Working tirelessly for this great sport, the members of the Management Committee, members of various sub committees and a whole range of technical, professional and voluntary providers have assisted to guide and influence swimming on the Downs.

Development The weekend of 26- 27th October was set aside for the Regions Development program. With help from Swimming Queensland and the DDRSA volunteers our Regions Development Head Coach Gail Smail was able to ensure the provision of suitable education and support programs for the coaches, swimmers and officials on the Darling Downs.

Swimming Queensland ran a JD squad weekend clinic at Fairholme College. Also a Junior and Assistant Coaching Course was conducted by Judy Dickson. Along with the swimmers, the coaches that attended gained valuable information and a rewarding experience.

The DDRSA ran a JX clinic at the Glennie pool with over 100 members attending, of which approximately 56 were swimmers. Swimming Queensland guest speaker Christian Sprenger and Paul Simms held a pool session. Katie Clewett (Exercise Physiologist) also spoke about her swimming career and put the swimmers through some swim specific core strengthening exercises. Christine White (Queensland Health) discussed the physical activity benefits of our sport and the dietary requirements of Junior Swimmers with the parents and swimmers. Ray Henderson and Bob Wharton ran a series of Technical Officials forums for parents wishing to gain accreditation. The weekend was very well organized and the feedback has been positive.

Following the Country Championships a clinic was held in Miles on Sunday 18th January for all interested swimmers. Approximately 40 swimmers attended with Paralympian Darren Thrupp putting the swimmers through some core strength exercises before undertaking a water session with Gail Smail and coaches.

However as with any Development programs there is room for improvement and therefore the Association is keen to run it again next season implementing helpful ideas gained from feedback. This is an evolving process, but one which is important to swimming on the Downs, continuing to assist our swimmers to the “next level”. The majority of our Region‟s development programs involve the swimmers being in the JX program. For many of the swimmers this is an achievable goal.

26

Registration System On the 10th August the DDRSA hosted a workshop presented by Gloria Williams and Dinah Glykidis from Swimming Queensland. They presented a forum on the new registration system and addressed any issues the clubs had. The clubs took some time to understand the system and as with any new system there have been teething problems. These are being worked through and the Association is sure the new system will make it easier for the Registrars of Clubs.

Accreditation of Technical Officials The Association received a Grant of $4000 from Dept of Sport & Recreation to undertake a program to increase the number of Accredited Officials on the Downs. With the Assessors and Trainers assistance this program has been a success with approximately 128 new Accredited Officials in various positions and 23 Accredited Officials continuing with further accreditation.

Regional Events The Regional Championships were held in Toowoomba on the 28th- 1st February 2009. The standard of swimming was very high and the Championships ran smoothly with keen officials and volunteers helping over the weekend. Mr Simon Hooton attended the Championships and his input was most welcome. The Country Championships were held in Miles on the 17th January. This continues to be an important event in the Region‟s Calendar as it provides country swimmers and clubs a chance to lift their profile outside Toowoomba. The Regional Short Course was held at Warwick in conjunction with the McNamara Sprints Open. This meet continues to meet our goal to have a Short Course meet that recognises the Region‟s Swimmers Short Course achievements. The Darling Downs Unique meet was held at Highfields. This meet ensures recognition for improvement rather than placings. The DDRSA Presentation Night was held on Saturday 21st March. This event gives the Region a chance to recognize our swimmers. This was a big occasion for the Association and was very well supported, beyond our expectation. The planning for this night started some 12 months before and the Association thanks Rhonda Sondergeld for all her work in making it a success. Hayley Wolff was our region‟s winner of the Swimmer of the Year award.

Congratulations The Association is proud to congratulate Bob Wharton on being awarded the Swimming Queensland Award of Excellence for his dedication to swimming. Bob is still a selector for the Association and is still working on pool deck as a Technical Official.

The Association also rewarded Life Membership to Gail Smail and Jenny Veivers for their tireless work for our Association over many years.

Lance Reddick was rewarded the title of "Patron Emeritus' at the Association‟s AGM as he has achieved great merit in his service to swimming.

Also congratulations to David Sondergeld who has gained his accreditation as a Referee.

Conclusion The Association would like to thank the staff of Swimming Queensland for all their help and support throughout the season and thank Queensland Sport and Recreation, Retra Vision and our local sponsors for their support. With continued support swimming on the Downs has a positive future.

WIDE BAY REGIONAL SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC.

President: Michele Watson Secretary: Gail Dowsett

WBRSA has had another very successful season.

Wide Bay held its Winter Short Course Championships in August 2008 at Mt Creek. The meet coincided with the Olympics in Beijing. 220 swimmers from 23 clubs nominated a total of 1214 individual swims. That is one third more nominations than last year. Special thanks go to Mt Creek Mooloolabah for their help and also the Mt Creek lessees Gen and Michael King. The facility was extremely well set up and the food and coffee were delicious.

Wide Bay scheduled a relay meet for early in April but after a change of date due to a clash with school swimming the meet was cancelled due to lack of nominations. It is a difficult task we face each year as our planning gets underway prior to the announcement of other dates. As we have already found this season our calendar has needed to change even after approval from SQ.

Wide Bay relay teams performed very well at the state relays in December. Our younger swimmers particularly enjoyed being part of the relays. Once again the format of having the relays on one day worked well from a regional perspective. Wide Bay results were really pleasing this year with a couple of teams all but filled with replacements. Wide Bay relay selections give some swimmers the opportunity to represent our region who sometimes do not meet squad eligibility.

WB Championships were held at the Noosa Aquatic Centre with the home club, Noosa taking the Championship crown. This ended the 7 year reign of Fairymead. Congratulations to Noosa and especially Brian Stehr for the success. The program was revitalized with heats and multi aged timed finals in the morning followed by finals and relays in the evening. Finals followed on from events on the Sunday. Mr Peter Plumridge represented SQ at the Championship taking feedback to the Board. The most important being that Wide Bay swimmers need more access to electronic timing in the region. At our winter short course a swimmer broke a state record but this could not be recognized as electronic timing was not used. At Wide Bay LC championships a protest would have been much easier sorted if timing had been present. I urge more clubs to apply for grants for electronic timing if their pools meet the required length. We need to move the Championship events around the region but must consider facilities.

A full development program kept many people busy this season as over 400 swimmers were offered places in a development program within the region. Many more also participated in SQ and SAL programs. JX Clinics were held in September, the Junior skills clinics in Burnett Fraser and the Sunshine Coast and later in the South Burnett. Early Achievers and Achievers attended the Supercamp held in Bundaberg and the development squad went to Mt Maunganui, NZ for the Spring meet in September. The relay teams competed at States in December. This coming season will see some changes to the selection and funding of squads. Wide Bay has always provided an exceptional development program with very limited funding. This coming season we are fortunate to have financial support for our development program from Swimming Queensland. This has enabled us to provide development programs at no cost to swimmers. Our current development program will be split into development and participation. Development will include JX clinics, Early Achievers, Achievers and State relay teams. Our Participation program will include Junior Skills clinics and the Development Squad.

Congratulations to all the people across the region who are making gains in helping to increase technical official numbers. Something we have found very positive is the number of people coming to the forums who are able to complete their general principles as a group.

28

Thanks to David, Dale and Paddy for their guidance and to Bobbi who has helped a lot on the coast.

Forums have changed a little over the season. The close of the Gympie Conference centre last July saw our September forum being held at the Gympie South School. Gloria Williams from Swimming Queensland attended and introduced the new online system to the region. Gloria has been very helpful in providing information as required as regions are not able to access they online system directly. Our December & March forums and this AGM have been held at the Gympie Civic centre. Delegates voted to keep the forums in Gympie being central to the region. Thanks go to Gayle who has managed the bookings, catering and advertising of the forums. A special thanks go the delegates who attend. It is important that the region involves delegates in the decision making process and keeps them informed of progress.

Sincere thanks to Kevin Hasemann and the staff of Swimming Queensland for their ongoing support of the Wide Bay region.

Special thanks also go to Gareth & Suki Sykes from Swimeroo for their ongoing support of Wide Bay Swimming. The shirts for squads were great and our championship tees were well received again.

Our presentation evening capped off a great season with a really enjoyable dinner held at the Boat Club in Hervey Bay. Paralympian Marayke Jonkers was our guest speaker. Special thanks to SQ for the gifts given to swimmers. Samantha Hamill was awarded WB swimmer of the year. Irene Armstrong WB volunteer of the year.

Points score – Winners of our divisional points score were Div. 1 Coolum; Div. 2 Kingaroy. Div. 3 Kawana Waters; Div 4 Nanango; Div 5 Bribie Island; Div 6 Cooloola Coast Crocs. Overall winner was Kawana Waters and overall handicapped winner was Burpengary.

Our trial of the 1800 number had mixed results. While limited calls were received website hits were significantly increased around the time of the screening of the TV and radio ads. Our sincere thanks go to John Wallace, Brett Mills and SQ for their contributions to the venture.

Membership across the region is down slightly on last year and interestingly Burnett Fraser and Sunshine Coast both have 44% membership. The South Burnett has 12%.

My heartfelt thanks go to each committee member. It is a time consuming job taking on a role on the WB committee The Management Committee has worked hard and had lots of fun as we meet, plan and implement things across the region throughout the season.

Donna Clark is leaving the Wide Bay committee this year. Donna has given so much of her time to swimming. She was the first person in Wide Bay to use Meet Manager and has helped person after person from clubs in side our region and some outside too. One of Donna‟s highlights during our trip to NZ last year was to spend some time with the SNZ officials in their recording room. While Donna shifts her focus she assures us she will keep in contact and help where possible.

As our season draws to a close the planning for the next 12 months of swimming is almost complete and with the support of each club in the region there is no reason why the next season will not be as good as the past. The one thing that has really improved a lot over the past few seasons is the friendship and willingness to assist the neighbouring clubs in and around our region. I really believe that forums help this process as delegates discuss the achievements and problems facing club committees. We have some amazing volunteers in the Wide Bay region. Congratulations everyone on another successful season.

CENTRAL QUEENSLAND SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC.

President: David Milburn Secretary: Lynne Furness

I express my thanks to management committee members (Geodd Rafter, Jodie Hiron, Glenda Eiseman, Jenny Smith & Rhonda Hite) for their pro-active efforts to improve swimming in CQ and ask club delegates to support their nominations for re-election onto the new committee along with the nomination of Naomi MacGilvray (Moranbah) for the position of CD Association Secretary.

The success of our swimmers at State and National level are noted and the addition of two National Age Champions in the 13 year & under age division is very exciting for Central Queensland. It confirms the swimming talent that Central Queensland possesses and encourages this committee to continue implementing initiatives designed to develop our region‟s swimming talent further. Certainly, with some many young, enthusiastic swimmers coming through, I believe swimming standards will continue to rise.

CQ coaches are congratulated for their efforts in developing our swimmers talent, which, given the achievements that are being made by their swimmers, indicates their own strong commitment to advancing CQ swimming. Our children are benefiting from this collective coaching effort and with an increasing number of young swimmers participating in our CQ Championships, our sport is looking very healthy. During our this year‟s Championship event, Olympian commented on the swimming ability that these young swimmers displayed during the meet.

We are now generating very strong, home grown competition here in CQ which, with increased level of competitiveness, will enable club‟s to further improve the swimming standard of their members. Our younger swimmers now have role models who they can closely relate to and because of this, will be inspired to believe and achieve for themselves.

I am mindful of the important part our parents play in supporting the efforts of their children and I congratulate each of you for this. Similarly, the contribution made by our officials, who, by ensuring Swimming Queensland criteria are always met, make it possible for our swimmer‟s efforts to be recognised by their governing bodies. In contributing this support of our children, I ask clubs to encourage their adult members to become SQ qualified for the technical positions they accept on their club nights. Regional success, which is very much the result of a team effort between swimmers, coaches, officials and parents, starts at club level.

The CQ Sprint Meet in January (jointly hosted by Yeppoon and Caribeae clubs) that provided a lead in meet for our swimmers attending State Sprint Championships was successful, as was the Central Queensland Regional Championships (hosted by Mighty Vikings). The new CQ Championship meet format, that includes competition on the Friday evening, was well received. There were many fine individuals throughout the meet, with new CQ records established by Katelyn Lynch, Todd Russell(2) and Matthew White. I also congratulate all our swimmers on their success. Similarly, I congratulate the Caribeae Swimming Academy Club on winning both The Martin Hansen “High Point Club Trophy” as well as the Applied Chemical Trophy” for most points won in finals.

I am pleases to acknowledge the financial assistance (received from Mr.Tony Gilligan and Rockhampton‟s Regional Council) which ensured CQ was successful and I express gratitude to Mr. Tom Upton for his efforts in this matter and thank the Rockhampton Regional Council on behalf of our association.

30

Support for Swimming Australia‟s JX Program continues to grow and more of our clubs are using it to their advantage in developing, acknowledging and rewarding young members. The CQ Emerging Squad camp was again very successful and Swimming Queensland provided development opportunities for a number of swimmers throughout the region, in addition to providing this association with financial and other benefits received from its own sponsors.

As well as seeking grant and other funding opportunities that can be used to our association‟s advantage and enable financial assistance to continue to be provided to swimmers, coaches, technical officials this coming season, I re-affirm that the management committee has been committed to supporting the efforts and initiatives of all affiliated clubs.

For Central Queensland, this coming season appears full of promise and with individual clubs, committees and coaches developing and growing their memberships, the natural competitiveness of our children will ensure swimming becomes faster and faster. Especially if clubs adopt a team philosophy that embraces the word FUN and continue supporting each other‟s meets throughout CQ.

NORTH QUEENSLAND SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC.

President: Alan White Secretary: Judy Hicks

2008/09 has been a successful season in so many ways. We have had 100% hit rate with applications for grants and every meet had or would have had an increase in nominations. The one thing we were not able to control was the weather with what seemed like never ending rain from January to March and then cyclone “Hamish”.

There‟s a name we will not forget in a hurry. Some meets were cancelled half way through or altogether and some went on regardless. However it did not make for ideal conditions for our swimmers to achieve their best.

The new wireless Semi Automatic Timing system which was acquired via a grant from “Gambling Community Benefit Fund” was a great investment. The system has lessened the overall time line of meets and is so efficient. NQSA clubs have embraced the system with enthusiasm and on the odd occasion where stop watches were used due to the system not being available or not required there were many polite grumbles.

Other grants received were from Volunteers Grants Program for fuel expenses for officials & volunteers to attend meets & meetings, Breakwater Island Casino Community Benefit Fund for lap counters and 2 small marquees, Dept of Sport & Recreation for financing „Come n Try Days‟ and the Telstra Assistance Fund for a large marquee and marshalling board. It is timely here that we thank sincerely Ms Jenny Talbot from Charters Towers for collating and submitting the grant applications on behalf of NQSA. Great job Jenny well done.

Our Regional Relay Teams at the State Championships this year did us proud as usual While the change of programming for the relays is not ideal for our region the swimmers chosen excelled themselves and for that we thank you.

North Queensland Championships this season was one the meets that had to be postponed due to the cyclone threat and was eventually held in late March. Due to this it was not our best year for attendance as the Australian Open Championships and State School Championships were on around the same time, although we did manage to have 175 swimmers. For the swimmers that did attend it was an opportunity to shine and shine they did. The meet was held in beautiful weather and went off without a hitch.

31

This season sees the largest number of North Qld swimmers qualify for both Open and Age Nationals in both the pool and open water. It is tremendous to see our swimmers doing so well and we look forward to further achievements on this level.

As this is my last year as Regional Secretary it is with sincere thanks I acknowledge the assistance of Louise Baker, Theresa Manning, Alan White, Derek Taylor, Luc Sennet, and Peter Powell. Without these people the position of Regional Secretary would almost be a full time job. Recognition and appreciation must also go to Swimming Queensland and their staff for their continued assistance and support, without them most regions would be working blind.

Also special thanks to the Technical Sub Committee and their Chairperson Alan Johnston who once again kept things moving with a positive outlook on their duties.

To all the volunteers throughout the region from timekeepers to club Secretaries and Presidents, congratulations on a wonderful job and keep up the great work. The swimmers of North Queensland thank you.

I am proud to say we end this season in a great position both financially and competitively which is a far cry from where we started 6 years ago. Here‟s hoping for another successful season in 2009/10.

FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND SWIMMING ASSOCIATION INC.

President: James Crompton Secretary: Dr. Roxanne Wu

The fourteen clubs in FNQ have enjoyed an enthusiastic season with membership increasing for the first time in some years. Our carnival circuit has been well supported, especially by the younger swimmers who have attended from as far away as Cooktown and Weipa.

The season started with the excitement of visits from the Australian Olympic Women‟s Waterpolo team and a contingent from the national Olympic team. What an inspiration for our kids to see how hard these champions work!

Back to Earth, up and coming JX swimmers got a lot of inspiration and top tips from the SQ JX Clinic, mentored by Brian Stehr and early in the Season.

Our region has sent competitors to all major Queensland State Championships. The seventeen relay teams brought home three medal placings and we are proud that TAS Swimming Cairns achieved the Best Country Club aggregate at Zoggs State championships 2008, for the second year running.

The FNQ region was proud to host the Queensland Primary Schools championships this year at the Smithfield Pool. This event was well attended and supported by our regional swimmers and the travelling did not stop participants from creating several new State records.

Our region is determined to help all our swimmers achieve their best in the coming season, while never losing sight of the enjoyment of swimming and joys of sport.
