Fennica 4:115- 129. The possible use of secondary genitalia (styles and spiculum ventrale) for the identification of females of Altica is investigated. Two identification keys are presented, one using both morphological and secondary genital characters and one using secondary genital characters only. The Finnish species are reviewed: A. cirsii Israelson is deleted, and A. quercetorum saliceti Weise and A. carduorum (Guerin-Meneville) are added to the Finnish list, now comprising 12 species. The geographical and temporal aspects of the distribution of the species in Finland is shown on UTM maps. Häuser2, Vo Dinh Ba3, Bui Dinh Duc4 1Vietnam National Museum of Nature, VAST 2Natural History Museum Berlin, Germany 3University of Science, Hue University 4Vietnam National University of Forestry SUMMARY The study on swallowtail butterflies (Papilionidae) of three protected areas of Thua Thien Hue province was carried out sometimes between April and June from 2015 to 2018, at different habitats and altitudes in Bach Ma National Park (NP), Phong Dien Nature Reserve (NR), and Sao La Nature Reserve (NR). Butterflies were observed and collected randomly by insect nets in the surveyed areas. In additional, butterfly species were also referred from previous works on butterflies in the area to make a list of Papilionidae species. The similarity of species composition between three protected areas was analyzed with Cluster Analysis by Primer V5. Total 36 species of the Papilionidae family has been recorded in three protected areas. There are 4 species listed in the Red Data Book of Vietnam (2007): Troides helena, T. aeacus, Teinopalpus aureus, and Papilio noblei. Among them, first three species are listed in the CITES (2018). Teinopalpus aureus is in the Red List of IUCN (2018). The similarity of species composition between protected areas is rather high (67%), highest between Phong Dien NR and Sao Lao NR (69.8%). The species composition of Bach Ma NP is slightly different from Phong Dien NR and Sao La NR as Bach Ma NP has 7 species not found in two other protected areas.

The results were compared with public data available for West Papua in the Barcode of Life Data System. During two training courses in 2013 and 2015, 1,052 specimens of insects were collected at eight sites near Manokwari in northern West Papua. The DNA sequences obtained from these specimens were assigned to 311 Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) and represent species in 27 families of Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera and Coleoptera. Of those BINs, 294 (95%) were new to West Papua.

Se añaden 27 nuevas citas y se discute la eliminación o la identificación taxonómica de determinados taxones que incrementan el catálogo faunístico hasta las 793 especies. Se dan nuevos registros de las especies endémicas Charissa assoi e Idaea korbi , mientras que otras especies como Proserpinus proserpina, Euclidia glyphica y Polyphaenis sericata , extendidas por la mitad septentrional de la Península Ibérica, son confirmadas en el área de estudio. Se aporta un nuevo dato de Polymixis germana , una especie rara conocida solamente del hábitat estepario xerotermófilo del sureste de la Península Ibérica.

These insects can cause impressive economic and ecological damage in the invaded environment. Thus, several countries use traps baited with pheromones and plant volatiles at ports of entry and surrounding natural areas to intercept incoming exotic species soon after their arrival and thereby reduce the likelihood of their establishment. In this study, we investigated the performance of eight trap colors in attracting jewel beetles and bark and ambrosia beetles to test if the trap colors currently used in survey programs worldwide are the most efficient for trapping these potential forest pests. In addition, we tested whether trap colors can be exploited to minimize inadvertent removal of their natural enemies.

If interspecific competition is ever important for phytophagous insects, it is likely to be observed in the insect guild that feeds in the phloem of trees. We tested for signals of interspecific competition in co-occurring species of pine sawyer beetles Monochamus Megerle (Coleoptera Cerambycidae), generally the largest phloemophagous insects in pines. We evaluated patterns of body size and its correlation with other life-history traits. By studying pine sawyer beetles in different areas (Northeast USA, Southeast USA and Portugal) we assessed the interaction with climate. As predicted under the hypothesis of interspecific competition, there were always clear size differences among coexisting species. As predicted if competition is asymmetric, smaller species were less abun- dant and emerged earlier than the larger species. In the larger and numerically dominant species, sexual size dimorphism was more pronounced and the sex ratio was skewed towards females. In the smaller species, males emerged earlier (protandry), whereas the larger species lacked differences in emergence time or displayed protogyny. Effects of climate only seem to have been expressed in the larger dominant species of each area, whereas the effects of competition in smaller species probably overshadow the effects of climate.

Nomura URBAN NATURALIST Developing Biodiverse Green Roofs for Japan: Arthropod and Colonizer Plant Diversity on Harappa and Biotope Roofs Ayako Nagase1,*, Yoriyuki Yamada2, Tadataka Aoki2, and Masashi Nomura3 Abstract - Urban biodiversity is an important ecological goal that drives green-roof in- stallation. We studied 2 kinds of green roofs designed to optimize biodiversity benefits: the Harappa (extensive) roof and the Biotope (intensive) roof. The Harappa roof mimics vacant-lot vegetation. It is relatively inexpensive, is made from recycled materials, and features community participation in the processes of design, construction, and mainte- nance. The Biotope roof includes mainly native and host plant species for arthropods, as well as water features and stones to create a wide range of habitats. This study is the first to showcase the Harappa roof and to compare biodiversity on Harappa and Biotope roofs. Arthropod species richness was significantly greater on the Biotope roof. The Harappa roof had dynamic seasonal changes in vegetation and mainly provided habitats for grassland fauna. In contrast, the Biotope roof provided stable habitats for various arthropods. Herein, we outline a set of testable hypotheses for future comparison of these different types of green roofs aimed at supporting urban biodiversity. Introduction Rapid urban growth and associated anthropogenic environmental change have been identified as major threats to biodiversity at a global scale (Grimm et al. 2008, Güneralp and Seto 2013). Green roofs can partially compensate for the loss of green areas by replacing impervious rooftop surfaces and thus, contribute to urban biodiversity (Brenneisen 2006).
