Cellist Christophe Coin Makes Tafelmusik Debut as Guest Director The Eloquent Cello, Oct 5–9, 2016 “The integrity and musicianly character of these performances is in no small measure heightened by the presence of Christophe Coin.” – Gramophone Toronto, Canada, September 14, 2016 … One of the world’s foremost period cellists, Christophe Coin makes his Tafelmusik debut in The Eloquent Cello, October 5 to 9, 2016, at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre. Designed as a showcase for early classical cello repertoire, the program includes music by CPE Bach, Boccherini, Dittersdorf, and Haydn. “We are very excited to be working with Christophe Coin,” says Tafelmusik cellist Allen Whear. “He has done so much for the reputation of the historic cello as a soloist, chamber music collaborator, and influential teacher. I am eager not only to hear him play with us, but to have him share his musical insights and considerable experience. Vive le violoncelle!” The Eloquent Cello opens with Coin leading Tafelmusik’s first-ever performances of the atmospheric Symphony no. 4 in F Major by Dittersdorf—a work inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, specifically the story of Andromeda’s rescue by Perseus. Coin will be featured as soloist in Haydn’s Cello concerto in C Major, a cornerstone of the cello repertoire that dynamically demonstrates the instrument’s many facets. The work is considered among the best concertos for any instrument from the early classical period. Coin’s "immense talent, meticulousness, and virtuosity" (Infoculture.biz) will be front and centre in the Cello concerto in D Major by Boccherini, the Italian composer often cited as the first cello virtuoso. The program includes CPE Bach’s Symphony for strings in B Minor, characterized by “strong themes, sensitive melodies, and startling harmonies set in unconventional structures” (Allmusic.com). ABOUT CHRISTOPHE COIN Acclaimed French cellist, gambist, and orchestral director Christophe Coin specializes in baroque and classical repertoire. After studies with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Vienna and Jordi Savall in Basel, he quickly established a solo career, and in 1987 formed le Quatuor Mosaïques, a renowned period-instrument quartet whose impressive discography includes works by Haydn, Mozart, Arriaga, Boccherini, Jadin, Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn. Coin’s own discography encompasses solo and ensemble repertoire, and includes a recording of the Haydn cello concertos with Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music. He teaches baroque cello and viola da gamba at his alma maters, the Conservatoire de Paris, and the Schola Cantorum in Basel. Audience members are invited to join Tafelmusik orchestra members and cellists Allen Whear and Christina Mahler for a pre-concert chat one hour before each performance. Christophe Coin offers a Guest Artist Masterclass on Saturday, October 8 from 1 to 3pm at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre. Tafelmusik’s Guest Artist Masterclasses are open to the public and admission is free. Christophe Coin’s appearance is generously supported by the Ontario Arts Foundation.
