    A Discursive Thematic Analysis of Audience Response Towards the Portrayal of Mental Distress in United Kingdom Soap Operas EDWARD SMITH A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the University of East London for the doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology July 2012 ABSTRACT The potential for stigmatising public attitudes to have a negative impact on the wellbeing of individuals identified as experiencing mental distress has been widely documented. The contribution of the mass media towards public attitudes surrounding mental distress has attracted particular interest, particularly that of television portrayals. Research into the influence of the media towards public attitudes has focused on a ‘strong media’ model that assumes a direct influence of the content on viewer attitudes. Recent theory has suggested an ‘audience response’ model whereby audience attitudes towards the subject matter, genre and purpose of viewing can influence their understanding of the content; however this approach is under-represented in research. In the United Kingdom the soap opera genre in particular is positioned to have a potential role in influencing public attitudes towards mental distress, frequently depicting mental distress within a realist frame and being presented as having a public service function. This thesis aims to explore the ideas that viewers take from soap opera portrayals of mental distress within an audience response approach. Soap opera viewers were interviewed about the ideas of mental distress they developed from storylines they had watched, and these interviews were analysed using a discursive thematic analysis, taking into account their beliefs about mental distress, the soap opera genre and their viewing purposes.

    Piers Morgan outrage over Brandpool celebrity trust survey Submitted by: Friday's Media Group Monday, 19 April 2010 Piers Morgan has expressed outrage at being voted the sixth least trusted celebrity brand ambassador in a survey by ad agency and creative content providers Brandpool. Writing in his Mail On Sunday column, the Britain’s Got Talent judge questioned the logic of the poll, which named the celebrities the public would most and least trust as the faces of an ad campaign. But Brandpool has hit back at Morgan for failing to recognise the purpose of its research. Morgan, who also neglected to credit Brandpool as the source of the study, said: “No real surprises on the Most Trusted list, which is led by ‘national treasures’ such as David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Richard Branson and Michael Parkinson. “As for the Least Trusted list, I find the logic of this one quite odd. Katie Price, for example, comes top, yet I would argue that she’s one of the most trustworthy people I know… Then I suddenly pop up at No 6, an outrage which perhaps only I feel incensed about. Particularly as that smiley little rodent Russell Brand slithers in at No 7. Making me supposedly less trustworthy than a former heroin junkie and sex addict.” Morgan was also surprised to see Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Sharon Osbourne, Tom Cruise and Jonathan Ross in the Least Trusted list. However, he agreed with the inclusion of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Tiger Woods and Tony Blair, all of whom, he said, were “united by a common forked tongue”.

    Tuesday June 24, 2014 THE BIRDS ARE BACK WITH A BRAND NEW SERIES OF BIRDS OF A FEATHER, PREMIERING ON UKTV FROM JULY 6 Sixteen years after the show ended, Chigwell’s most famous daughters are back with the revival of 90s hit comedy series, Birds of a Feather premiering in Australia on UKTV from July 6. The new series (8 x 30’) has been a massive ratings hit in the UK, attracting audiences of up to 9.5 million making the 2014 series the most successful comedy launch for ITV in over a decade. Another series has been commissioned. The revival offers fans a dose of nostalgia with all three original actresses - Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph reprising their roles as the original Essex girls. Also making a comeback are original writers Laurence Marks, Maurice Gran, Gary Lawson and John Phelps who teamed up to write the new eight-part series.
