The cultura jonda (“deep culture”) comes alive in his cante (flamenco singing). At the peak of his maturity as an artist, Menese has become the most authentic symbol of a decisive period in the history of flamenco art, one that began in the 1950’s and 60’s and was known as the flamenco renaissance. José Menese played a crucial role in this renaissance and he has been loyal to his lineage long enough that now, thirty years later, he has again become a point of reference for the new flamenco renaissance that fans of the purest cante (flamenco singing) are currently demanding. José Menese. He was born and raised in 1942 in La Puebla de Cazalla (Seville), where, from an early age, he first began to discover his love of cante (flamenco singing). In 1959, having sung at La Puebla and at El Café Central, Menese debuted at the Carretria de Osuna movie theater alongside Antonio Mairena himself. Menese moved to Madrid in the early 60’s, under the patronage of Francisco Moreno Beltrán (La Puebla’s lyricist). -

Para demostrar que esta consideración es el resultado de un largo proceso de transformación, se analizan los escritos sobre tonás y martinetes y se compara el contenido de sus coplas con las descripciones de ciertos hechos históricos. En múltiples casos coinciden los fragmentos, aunque sean muy breves, con determinados acontecimientos reales, lo que se puede interpretar como un indicio de que las letras efectivamente derivan de unos textos de romances noticiosos, narrando sobre asuntos carcelarios y la persecución de los gitanos. Uno de los hechos concretos constituye la Prisión General de los Gitanos, realizada en 1749, incluyendo su preparación y sus consecuencias. -

EMBODIED IDENTITIES: NEGOTIATING THE SELF THROUGH FLAMENCO DANCE by PAMELA ANN CALTABIANO Under the Direction of Emanuela Guano ABSTRACT Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Atlanta, this study analyzes how transnational practices of, and discourse about, flamenco dance contribute to the performance and embodiment of gender, ethnic, and national identities. It argues that, in the context of the flamenco studio, women dancers renegotiate authenticity and hybridity against the backdrop of an embodied “exot- ic” passion. Then, slowly, distant birdsong becomes audible. Long panning shot: blue sky cut by two 1 tall cypresses. The camera pans down into a small square in a cemetery in Barcelona. The square is flanked by the traditional stacked tombs, buried into deep walls, festooned with flowers, photographs, trinkets and other mementos of dead loved ones. As the camera pans down, the floor of the small square is revealed, a dusty sandy surface floor over paved bricks, parched by the hot Spanish sun. A woman appears from the far right-hand corner, in traditional Andalusian dress, fluttering a fan in the heat with her right hand. She makes her way uncertainly into the square, left hand on hip, and sways her hips slowly. She saunters over to the wall on the left of the shot, slowly checking some tombs as she passes, walking towards the camera. As the camera closes in on her, we see she is wearing a mantilla or black lace head scarf over a peineta or ornamental comb: traditional Andalusian dress. Yellow flowers emerge from under the mantilla. Slowly, respectfully, she surveys more tombs, as if looking for someone. She continues to waft the fan swiftly, nervously, in a manner close to ritual. She wears the demeanour of a woman de luto riguroso, in deep mourning. -

A great deal of emphasis is placed on purity and its loss, relating nuevo flamenco with the whole history of flamenco and its discourses, as well as tracing its relationship to other musical genres, mainly jazz. While centred on the process of fusion and crossover it also explores through music the characteristics and implications that nuevo flamenco and its discourses have impinged on related issues as Gypsy identity and cultural authenticity. -

It is not beautiful in the operatic sense, but its expressive power is extraordinary.”—Allan Kozinn, New York Times Critic, 1997 (Kozinn) Carmen Linares is arguably the most important singer active in the world of ! amenco today. Born in 1951 in the town of Linares, in Eastern Andalusia, Carmen Linares (Mari Carmen Pacheco Rodríguez) has been pursuing her career in ! amenco cante ( singing ) since her childhood. # e daughter of a ! amenco guitarist, young Linares was o$ en escorted by her father to attend ! amenco recitals (Chuse, “Anda Jaleo” 140). In addition to being one of the % rst ! amenco artists to perform at the Lincoln Center (singing de Falla’s “El Amor Brujo” with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra), Linares also currently has eight studio albums to her name. Of particular note is her Antología de la Mujer en el Cante (1996), the % rst album of its kind to compile music composed or sung by cantaoras ( female singers ) (Chuse, Cantaoras 136). Her newest album, Raíces y alas (2008), was awarded “Best Flamenco Album” in the thirteenth edition of the Spanish Premios de la música (2009) and was a candidate for the 2009 Latin Grammys (Linares, “Discography”). Comprised entirely of settings of poetry by Juan Ramón Jiménez, Raíces y alas channels together the art forms of poetry and song in the medium of Linares’s voice. -

LAS RAÍCES DEL DUENDE: LO TRÁGICO Y LO SUBLIME EN EL CANTE JONDO DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Francisco Javier Mora Contreras, MA ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Samuel Amell, adviser Professor Stephen Summerhill ________________________ Professor Jorge Abril Trigo Adviser Spanish and Portuguese Graduate Program ABSTRACT Within the world of Andalusian music called flamenco, popular language first, and later intellectualised reflections by cultural elites have coined a term, duende [charm, charisma, magic…], whose purpose is either the process of generation of artistic creation, or the specific manner of emotional intercommunication between artist and audience, or the formal objectifying of the tragic spirit in a peculiar manner of flamenco expression called cante jondo [deep song]. Ever since Federico García Lorca in the 1920s, and from very distant disciplines and sciences, a number of theories have emerged, one of whose main axis has been the attempt to clarify such an ineffable experience. Therefore, this work intends to do a critical survey of some of the texts which flamencology considers canonical for the understanding of duende and cante jondo. We will not regard cante jondo here as a subset of styles within the flamenco musical current, but as a particular way of interpreting this kind of music, consisting of the expression of tragic and pathetic contents subjected to minimalist, primitivist forms developed during the second half of the 19th century, following the premises of romantic aesthetics. For that very reason, we thought it necessary to do research into the concept of the tragic and its links to the aesthetic category of the sublime in the context of the reflections on art produced in European pre-romanticism and romanticism. -

The program consists of four levels of educational nature, with the aim of teaching / as dancers / as everything related to the world of flamenco both in theory and in practice. We know that flamenco tiptoes through the conservatories and what we try is to strengthen parallel with this program and thus add knowledge and job training needed for working life. School Flamenco de Andalucía is an entity with legal capacity for the official accreditation of vocational training flameno and Spanish Dance all artistic and professional levels.
