Catholic University of America N THE present article a study will be made of Saint Augustine's doc I trine of the Mystical Body of Christ. This subject is, as it will be later pointed out, timely and fruitful. It is of unutterable importance for the proper and full conception of the Church. This study may be conveniently divided into four parts: (I) A fuller consideration of the doctrine of the Mystical Body of Christ, as it is found in the works of the great Bishop of Hippo; (II) a brief study of that same doctrine, as it is found in the sources which the Saint utilized; (III) a scrutiny of the place that this doctrine holds in the whole system of his religious thought and of some of its peculiarities; (IV) some consideration of the influence that Saint Augustine exercised on the development of this particular doctrine in theologians and doctrinal systems. THE DOCTRINE St. Augustine gives utterance in many passages, as the occasion de mands, to words, expressions, and sentences from which we are able to infer that the Church of his time was a Church of sacramental rites and a hierarchical order. Further, writing especially against Donatism, he is led Xo portray the Church concretely in its historical, geographical, visible form, characterized by manifest traits through which she may be recognized and discerned from false chuiches. The aspect, however, of the concept of the Church which he cherished most fondly and which he never seems tired of teaching, repeating, emphasizing, and expound ing to his listeners is the Church considered as the Body of Christ.1 1 On St. -

Teresianum 45 (1994/2) 439-455 THE POINT OF DEPARTURE OF FUNDAMENTAL THEOLOGY EDWIN DINIZ The course of fundamental theology is still subject to morphological changes and the various endeavours in the course of the history of theology show, that this course still re mains to be defined, if it is to be defined at all. Attempts have been made in this brief reflection to give a short historical glimpse on the subject and then to decipher its identity in the context of theological studies. Finally, without entering the field of the scope or aim of fundamental theology, attention has been concentrated on the point of de parture in the study of fundamental theology. REFLECTIONS ON THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY RAOUL DEDEREN Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan Faith in the living God has been rejected time and again by the ignorant and the indifferent, as well as by many of the learned and the thoughtful. It has been especially chal- lenged today. Such theologians as Bishop John A. T. Robinson of Woolwich, honestly seeking to be Honest to God, urge Christians to abandon most of the phrasing which historically has been used to convey Christian thought. Similarly, the late Bishop James A. Pike of California dismisses many traditional doctrines as old bottles which will inevitably burst and whose bursting should occasion no regrets. In this kind of context many men, even ministers, feel uneasy when they think about the Trinity. The question before us is whether it is time to renounce a doctrine which, by affirming that there are three persons in God, seems to have produced confusion rather than clarification, or whether it was designed to embody values that are a vital and necessary part of the Christian faith. From the days of Arius it has been a chosen scheme with his disciples to represent the doctrine of the Trinity as an artificial theological construct, and consequently unimportant. To a large number of Christians, however, it is a doctrine fundament4 to Christianity since it deals with a correct knowledge of God. Related to the divine Being, his nature and mode of being, this knowledge affects every man's understanding of God as the object of his worship, whether he regards him as one in essence and one in person, or admits that in the unity of the Deity there are three equally divine persons. -

Gospel Ferment in India among both Hindus and Christians Jesus, My Master: “Jesu Bhakta” Hindu Christian Theology by Herbert Hoefer n my last trip to India, Professor Ravi Tiwari of Gurukul Lutheran Theological College in Chennai kindly gave me a copy Oof his biography of his father, a Brahmin convert and theological professor: Yisu Das: Witness of a Convert (ISPCK, Delhi, 2000), Dr. Yisu Das, of course, was a member of the church, though—as with most non- dalit converts—he did not fit in. As I mused on the elements of Dr. Das’ theology, I started pulling together other experiences of theological thinking that I had found among “Christian Bhaktis” (as Dr. Das called himself), particularly among the non-baptized believers in Christ. At the start of Professor Tiwari’s stimulating biography, he provides the sum- mary of his father’s faith, as he had presented it to a conference in 1963. Listen to “The elements of the Christian Faith, which have appealed to me” (p. 5): 1. The presence of the living Christ. He quotes the Christian mystic Thomas a Kempis: “That man only is rich with whom Jesus delights to dwell.” 2. A person worthy of our devotion. In contrast, Dr. Das speaks of the Hindu Bhakti tradition in which “the devotees have a nobler character than the gods they wor- ship.” I am reminded of the anthropological axiom: People become like the gods they worship. 3. Jesus’ teaching of God as our personal Father. “This teaching has given to Christian prayer simplicity, directness, dignity, which is seldom found elsewhere.” 4. -

WTJ 69 (2007): 1-19 HISTORICAL AND THEOLOGICAL STUDIES PATRISTIC EXEGESIS AND THEOLOGY: THE CART AND THE HORSE DONALD FAIRBAIRN his article grows out of two dominant perceptions that I have developed Tthrough my work with theological students and teachers. The first of these perceptions is that there is strong and growing interest in patristic interpretation of the Bible among evangelical biblical scholars and theologians. The second perception is that virtually all biblical studies students and professors I have encountered are working from a model for understanding patristic exegesis that is inadequate and does not reflect what patristics scholars have been writing about patristic exegesis for the last several decades. I have in mind the model that divides patristic exegesis into two competing—and largely mutually exclu- sive—schools, one based in Antioch and the other in Alexandria. Now I should hasten to add that the inadequacy of such a model is not some- thing that biblical scholars and theologians could necessarily have recognized themselves, and I hope that nothing I am about to write will be taken as a criti- cism of contemporary biblical scholars. Rather, the prevalence of this model is an unfortunate example of the way the scholarly arena sometimes works. What patristics scholars were saying seventy or eighty years ago about patristic exege- sis has worked its way into the historical theology, church history, and herme- neutics textbooks in the last forty or fifty years. As American patristics scholar Charles Kannengiesser recently pointed out, a great deal of work on patristic exegesis done by biblical scholars from about 1950 onwards treated the literal and figurative senses of biblical passages not as interpretive options for the texts under investigation, but rather as general exegetical methods, and these methods were bound to local ‘‘school’’ requirements. -
