INDOOR MEETINGS AT FORMAL INDOOR MEETINGS, illustrated talks are given and questions invited. Booking or door charge may be required. INFORMAL INDOOR MEETINGS are a forum to exchange natural history ideas and problems. Members are invited to report observations and bring specimens/pho- tos.

FIELD MEETINGS Bring lunch and tea on whole-day meetings. Stout shoes or boots are advisable. Binoculars and/or hand lenses are recommended. Cars not needed unless otherwise specified. The surveys are opportunities for individual or group studies to investigate and monitor aspects of the natural history of 400 acres of deciduous woodland and scrub grassland, with a stream and nine ponds, on this N.T. common. Large scale maps, aerial photographs, progress reports, identification handbooks and charts available. Explorer No 146 recommended. Meetings are held on the second Saturday in each month. Meet at Society’s hut (TQ125563) at 11am or between 1pm and 2pm. Car parking on common at grid ref. TQ121567, 134569 and 130557. HAMPSTEAD HEATH SURVEY

The Survey is a long-term project to record the flora and fauna in this large area (more than 300 ha) of semi-natural habitat entirely surrounded by the urban environment of North London. Walks and study events, focused on various aspects of the ecology and wildlife of the Heath, are held throughout the year. All are welcome, experts and beginners alike, so come along and bring your friends if you want to discover more about Hampstead Heath's diversity of wildlife. Wed Wild Philippines 11 7pm – 8.30pm (Doors open at 6.30pm) Nigel Hicks TALK Burgh House, New End Square, Hampstead, NW3 1LT Through his talk, Nigel summarises the essence of his book ‘Wild Philippines’ (due Summer 2019), concentrating especially on some of the Philippines' many endemic species, particularly its birds. He describes a few of these species, and outlines both the huge problems faced as a result of habitat loss and some of the progress being made by the country's increasingly active and prominent conservation movement. Nigel has worked off and on for around 20 years in the Philippines and the talk will be richly illustrated with images of its fauna. Richard will walk us through the various options now available, from mobile phone clip-ons through extension tubes and purpose-made lenses for DSLRs, showing the macro is open to all, no matter what skills you may have or what your budget is. He will also show you tips and tricks and talk about composition and post-processing. Although this talk is geared towards beginners, those with some experience will also learn something new!

Wed Earthworm ID Day at 20 10am – 4pm The FSC BioLinks Project has teamed up with the Earthworm Society of Britain to help launch an exciting new For Garden Earthworm Monitoring Programme. This expert-led identification day will involve sorting through earthworm samples and recording the numbers of juveniles present, as well as identifying adult earthworms to species level using the FSC AIDGAP Key to the Earthworms of the UK & Ireland. Participants will be encouraged to complete the survey prior to attending in their garden (or a local site that they have permission to survey). Please note that this course will be using specimens that have been killed and preserved. Booking is essential. A small booking fee of £5 is required to reserve a space as places are limited due to microscope availability. Sat Hampstead Heath Extension Grazing Zone Survey 4 10.30am – 3pm Led by representatives who will help us look at the diversity of botanical, entomological, arachnid, ornithological and other biological groups present in and around an area of rough meadow/scrubby grassland to the North-west of the junior cricket field, often called the Extension meadow ant grassland, which has been earmarked for a likely grazing trial. Continuing our surveys of wildplants on allotment sites. 13 LIBRARY The Society has an extensive library of books, journals and other publica- tions on British natural history, with a particular emphasis on the London region. It is housed in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD. There is a drop-in enquiry service 10:30–17:00 Monday to Friday and the first Saturday of the month (second after bank holidays) when you can use the Library, get identification help from the staff, or consult the British collections. Senior Members: £16.00 Over 65 years of age and who have been continuous members of the Society for 10 complete years. Family Members: Where members of one family live at the same address only one need pay the full subscription. Others pay £4.00 and do not receive the publica- tions, except the Programme. Corporate Subscribers: £20.00 Available to organisations such as companies, local authorities and colleges. Carries the same privileges as ordinary membership including the annual journals at no extra cost.

The first annual payment of members elected after 1st October in any year shall cover the year following that of their election. Application forms for new members can be downloaded from the Society’s website.

PUBLICATIONS The London Naturalist, London Bird Report, Newsletter and Programmes are sent to all members other than family members as they are issued.

SOCIETY GRANTS The Society sets aside a sum of money each year to assist conservation work, the establish- ment or maintenance of nature reserves and scientific investigation in the London area. Applications for grants and loans are considered by the Administration and Finance Commit- tee. Enquiries should be addressed to the Society’s Secretary. Papers reporting research supported in this way must be submitted for publication in the Society’s journals. London
