The Voices of NPR
Episode 11 – Michael Goldfarb – All Along the Watchtower The Voices of NPR And now a personal word, Michael Goldfarb has the voice of a journalist who has witnessed important events. He speaks with weariness and authority. His voice evokes a chorus of NPR announcers who report from near and distant places. Writer Dierdre Mask noted in an article in the Atlantic magazine, “We can’t see NPR reporters, so we have to picture them. And because they are with us in our most private moments—alone in the car, half-asleep in bed—we start to think we know them.” And we do think we know them. Their voices are iconic: distinct, informative, comforting, familiar. Their voices are the sounds of our better selves when we are bright and learned and engaged in the affairs of the world. No matter the day’s events, they give us hope that in a crazy world, sense and sensibility will prevail. Here are a few names I grew up with: Susan Stamberg, Bob Edwards, Carl Kasell, Noah Adams, Linda Wertheimer, Robert Siegel, Scott Simon, Cokie Roberts, and Bob Mondello. Each name evokes a voice, a style, a beat, that is the news soundtrack of our lives and shared imagination. We hear their stories as they report from bureaus from foreign capitals: Eleanor Beardsley, Paris; Rob Gifford, London; Ofiebea Quist-Arcton, Dakar; and, of course, Sylvia Poggioli, Rome. We hear war correspondents in the thick of battle: Michael Golfarb in Northern Ireland and Bosnia; Kelly McEvers in the midst of death and kidnapping in the Arab Spring, Tom Bowman among the fire and mortars of Helmand Province, and David Gilkey ambushed and killed by the Taliban. -

Drag Queens and Farting Preachers: American Televangelism, Participatory Media, and Unfaithful Fandoms by Denis J. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Studies of religion and fandom have generally considered sincere devotion a fundamental point of contact between the two cultural phenomena, an assumption not reflected in fan studies proper. This dissertation aims to expand the scope of research on religion and fandom by offering cultural histories of “unfaithful” fan followings of three controversial American televangelists – Robert Tilton, Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner, and Jim Bakker – dating from the 1980s to 2012, and consisting of individuals amused by, rather than religiously affiliated with, their chosen television preachers. It is argued that through their ironic, parodic, and satirical play with celebrity preachers widely believed to be religious fakes, these unfaithful fans have engaged in religious work related to personal and public negotiations of authentic Christianity. Additionally, it is demonstrated that through their activities, and in particular through their media practices, these fans have impacted the brands and mainstream representations of certain televangelists, and have provoked ministry responses including dismissal, accommodation, and counteraction. iii Acknowledgements Family comes first. FILMMAKER BIOS ALICIA SAMS Alicia Sams has extensive production experience in both documentary and feature films. Prior to Arab American Stories, she was producer/director (with Amy Rice) of the Emmy-Award winning film BY THE PEOPLE: THE ELECTION OF BARACK OBAMA which premiered on HBO in 2009. Also in 2009, Sams was executive producer of Cherien Dabis’ award-winning debut feature AMREEKA, which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and went on to win the Critics Prize at the Director’s Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival. Sams traveled with the film to Tunisia in December 2010 as part of the Sundance Institute’s Film Forward program. She is also developing the feature films PEACE LIKE A RIVER with Warner Bros and Dreamworks pictures, and CATCH THE MOON, a romantic comedy set in Gaza. Past productions include: TOOTS; WANDERLUST; GRATEFUL DAWG; HELLO HE LIED: AND OTHER TRUTHS FROM THE HOLLYWOOD TRENCHES, PRESS ON, KEEPING TIME: NEW MUSIC FROM AMERICA’S ROOTS, SUNBURN and OFF THE MENU: THE LAST DAYS OF CHASEN’S.
