Declared the World Year of Physics by the United Nations, the year provided a unique opportunity for the international physics community to reach out to the general public while celebrating the centennial of Einstein’s “miraculous year.” The year started with an international Launching Conference in Paris, France that brought together more than 500 students from around the world to interact with leading physicists. -

The physical proof of this is a large box of stationery with my return address that says (I am not making this up) “Office of the President.” If you receive a letter from me, you can check it out for yourself. AAS Elections Final Slate As incoming President, I got to sit at the left hand of NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe during lunch before his presentation at the Denver meeting. He had a little trouble with the vacuum seal on the coffee 6 pot, and there were no dexterous robots at the table, so I used my human ingenuity to hold the top Committee News firmly while rotating the coffee pot clockwise with the handle. Exactly like opening a bottle of champagne: hold the cork and rotate the bottle. But not as much fun. 7 International Travel O’Keefe’s speech was quite passionate and made it very clear that he does not want to send astronauts Grant Application to refurbish the Hubble Space Telescope. Chapter 16 The Sun and Stars Stargazing is an awe-inspiring way to enjoy the night sky, but humans can learn only so much about stars from our position on Earth. The Hubble Space Telescope is a school-bus-size telescope that orbits Earth every 97 minutes at an altitude of 353 miles and a speed of about 17,500 miles per hour. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) transmits images and data from space to computers on Earth. In fact, HST sends enough data back to Earth each week to fill 3,600 feet of books on a shelf. Scientists store the data on special disks. In January 2006, HST captured images of the Orion Nebula, a huge area where stars are being formed. HST’s detailed images revealed over 3,000 stars that were never seen before. Information from the Hubble will help scientists understand more about how stars form. In this chapter, you will learn all about the star of our solar system, the sun, and about the characteristics of other stars. 1. Why do stars shine? 2. What kinds of stars are there? 3. How are stars formed, and do any other stars have planets? 16.1 The Sun and the Stars What are stars? Where did they come from? How long do they last? During most of the star - an enormous hot ball of gas day, we see only one star, the sun, which is 150 million kilometers away. Surfing on a Flash of Light from an Exploding Star _______ By Abraham Loeb on December 26, 2019 A common sight on the beaches of Hawaii is a crowd of surfers taking advantage of a powerful ocean wave to reach a high speed. Could extraterrestrial civilizations have similar aspirations for sailing on a powerful flash of light from an exploding star? A light sail weighing less than half a gram per square meter can reach the speed of light even if it is separated from the exploding star by a hundred times the distance of the Earth from the Sun. This results from the typical luminosity of a supernova, which is equivalent to a billion suns shining for a month. The Sun itself is barely capable of accelerating an optimally designed sail to just a thousandth of the speed of light, even if the sail starts its journey as close as ten times the Solar radius – the closest approach of the Parker Solar Probe. The terminal speed scales as the square root of the ratio between the star’s luminosity over the initial distance, and can reach a tenth of the speed of light for the most luminous stars. Powerful lasers can also push light sails much better than the Sun. The Breakthrough Starshot project aims to reach several tenths of the speed of light by pushing a lightweight sail for a few minutes with a laser beam that is ten million times brighter than sunlight on Earth (with ten gigawatt per square meter). Achieving this goal requires a major investment in building the infrastructure needed to produce and collimate the light beam. -

Ever since Galileo first turned his new-fangled one-inch “spyglass” on the moon in 1609, the popular image of the astronomer has been someone who peers through a telescope at the night sky. But astronomers virtually never put eye to lens these days. The main source of astronomical data is still photons (particles of light) from space, but the tools used to gather and analyze them are now so sophisticated that it’s no longer necessary (or even possible, in most cases) for a human eye to look through them. But for all the high-tech gadgetry, the 21st-Century astronomer is still trying to answer the same fundamental questions that puzzled Galileo: How does the universe work, and where did it come from? Webster’s dictionary defines “astronomy” as “the science that deals with the material universe beyond the earth’s atmosphere.” This definition is broad enough to include great theoretical physicists like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking as well as astronomers like Copernicus, Johanes Kepler, Fred Hoyle, Edwin Hubble, Carl Sagan, Vera Rubin, and Margaret Burbidge. In fact, the words “astronomy” and “astrophysics” are pretty much interchangeable these days. Whatever you call them, astronomers seek the answers to many fascinating and fundamental questions. Among them: *Is there life beyond earth? *How did the sun and the planets form? *How old are the stars? *What exactly are dark matter and dark energy? *How did the Universe begin, and how will it end? Astronomy is a physical (non-biological) science, like physics and chemistry. -

Hubble’s images have made careers, paved the way for a Nobel prize and inspired a generation of astronomers. In this series, Nature Video asked five scientists to tell us about their favourite Hubble moment. Nature Video Episode 5: Robert Kirshner, astronomer at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was part of the supernova team that used Hubble to discover the accelerating expansion of the universe, for which the team leaders received the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics. Kirshner also used Hubble to probe the ashes of supernovae, most famously one that appeared in the southern sky in 1987. Episode 4: Mike Massimino, former NASA astronaut. Massimino has had a closer relationship with Hubble than almost anyone else on Earth — or off it. As an active astronaut, he helped to service the telescope in orbit on two space-shuttle missions, in 2002 and 2009. 1 Episode 3: Antonella Nota, at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland, and the European Space Agency, uprooted her life and moved from Italy to Maryland to join the Hubble project, just weeks before the 1986 Challenger explosion delayed the launch for three years. -

Name: fXPLORING SOLAR fNfRGY student Guide WHAT IS SOLAR ENERGY? Every day, the sun radiates (sends out) an enormous amount of energy. It radiates more energy in one second than the world has used since time began. This energy comes from within the sun itself. Like most stars, the sun is a big gas ball made up mostly of hydrogen and helium atoms. The sun makes energy in its inner core in a process called nuclear fusion. During nuclear fusion, the high pressure and temperature in the sun's core cause hydrogen (H) atoms to come apart. Four hydrogen nuclei (the centers of the atoms) combine, or fuse, to form one helium atom. During the fusion process, radiant energy is produced. It takes millions of years for the radiant energy in the sun's core to make its way to the solar surface, and then ust a little over eight minutes to travel the 93 million miles to earth. The radiant energy travels to the earth at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light. Only a small portion of the energy radiated by the sun into space strikes the earth, one part in two billion. Yet this amount of energy is enormous. Every day enough energy strikes the United States to supply the nation's energy needs for one and a half years. -

A star is a large, hot ball of gases, held together by gravity, that gives off its own light. A constellation is a group of stars that appear to form a pattern. As Earth revolves, different constellations can be seen, like Orion, which is a winter constellation in the Northern Hemisphere. Constellations are classified by the seasons they appear in. Finding the Big Dipper in Ursa Major, the Great Bear, can help you find Polaris, the North Star. If you are unsure of directions, the North Star can help you. Because of our perspective, the stars in the sky form pictures, as we look at them from Earth. If we looked at the same stars from outside our solar system, the pictures would not look the same. Finding the Distance to a Star . Viewed from different points in Earth’s orbit, some stars seem to change position slightly compared to stars farther away. The apparent shift in an objects position when viewed from two locations is called parallax. Astronomers use parallax to find the distance of a star from Earth. -
