Names of the Accused in the Rivonia Treason Trial. The charges are under the Sabotage Act – the General Law Amendment Acts of 1962 and 1963. The accused who were detained at Rivonia, the home of Alfred Goldstein. 1. Walter Sisulu, 50 years old former Secretary-General under sentence of 6 years imprisonment. 2. Aligned Kathrada, youth leader of the Transvaal Indian Congress of one of the accused in the former Treason Trial. 3. Lionel Bernstein, architect, Johannesburg. 4. Dr. Hilliard Festenstein. 5. B.A. Hoppel, barrister in Johannesburg, son of Alex Hoppel, former M.P. and leader of the South African Labour Party. 6. Denis Goldberg. 7. Nelson Mandela, leader of the African people already serving a sentence of 5 years imprisonment. 8. Govan Mbeki, African. 9. Raymond Mahlaba. 10. Elisa Matsoaledi. 11. Andrew Mlangeni. 12. James Cantor, Partner of legal firm and brother-in-law of Harold Wolpe who escaped. Abram Fischer, Q.C., is appearing for most of the accused. Mr. H.C. Nicholas, Q.C., is appearing for Cantor, and four of the accused, Mahlaba, Matsoaledi, Mlangeni and Hoppel are not represented. The accused first appeared before the Judge-President of the Transvaal Surpeme Court, Mr. Justice de Wet on Wednesday, 9th October and on the application for the Council for the Defence the judge adjourned the trial for 29th October.
