2019 Pocono UJA Campaign Opening Program hailed “a success” by all Close to fifty people from Scranton and throughout the Poconos enjoyed a delicious dinner and a truly informative lecture at Temple Israel of the Poconos in Stroudsburg on Sunday evening October 14, 2018. Colfax Avenue Enterprises prepared a beautiful buffet including fruit and vegetable appetizers, as well as a sumptuous dinner and a wide variety of desserts. Cold and hot beverages were available to all. The program formally opened the Federation’s 2019 UJA Campaign for its Pocono affiliates. Bernie Driller, representing Temple Israel of the Poconos, welcomed everyone. Doug Fink, President of the Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania, explained to the guests the importance of Federation’s work and Esther Adelman, Administrative Vice-President of the Federation then introduced the guest speaker for the evening - Jonathan Tobin. Tobin is the award-winning editor-in-chief of the Jewish News Service (JNS.org) and a Contributing Writer for National Review which is considered to be the nation’s pre-eminent conservative magazine of opinion and ideas. In addition, he is a regular columnist for the New York Post, the Federalist, Haaretz, the New York Jewish Week, MiDA and the Gatestone Institute and his specialty includes the American political scene, U.S. foreign policy as it relates to the U.S. -Israel relationship, Middle East and the Jewish world. Each year at this time the Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania calls upon members of our community to assist in defraying the expense of issuing our regional Jewish newspaper, The Reporter. The newspaper is delivered twice of month (except for December and July which are single issue months) to each and every identifiable Jewish home in Northeastern Pennsylvania. As the primary Jewish newspaper of our region, we have tried to produce a quality publication for you that offers our readership something on everything from opinions and columns on controversial issues that affect our people and our times, to publicity for the events of our affiliated agencies and organizations to life cycle events, teen columns, personality profiles, letters to the editor, the Jewish community calendar and other columns that cover everything from food to entertainment. The Federation assumes the financial responsibility for funding the enterprise at a cost of $26,400 per year and asks only that we undertake a small letter writing mail campaign to our recipients in the hope of raising $10,000 from our readership to alleviate a share of that responsibility. We would be grateful if you would care enough to take the time to make a donation for our efforts in bringing The Reporter to your door.

As always, your comments, opinions & suggestions are always welcome.

As of September 21st we know that Temple of Israel and Congregation B’nai Israel in Wilmington and Temple B’nai Sholem in New Bern (both in North Carolina) have already sustained significant damage and many members of the Jewish communities from those cities as well as from Myrtle Beach (in South Carolina) remain displaced.

The Jewish Federation of Raleigh (being the closest Federation to those coastal communities) and the Raleigh Jewish Family Service agency will be the central point of intake for aected families.

Their lives hang in the balance. As Jews we must do our part in relieving their suering as we have always done when faced with national catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina (2005), Hurricane Sandy (2012) and Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria (2017).

Immediate aid is needed to help these communities get back on their feet. Afterwards, rebuilding and strengthening resilience can take years. We must be there for them. The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) has also set up a donation page for donors who wish to contribute cash or make contributions through their credit cards. Here is the link: https://www.jewishfederations.org/Hurricane-Relief-Fund-2018. Note however, that with additional hurricanes anticipated during this hurricane season, JFNA has incorporated language that allows it to help victims of any hurricanes that make landfall this 2018 season.

Thank you for your generosity.
