Frank Joseph Rodimer was born in the heart of the Paterson Diocese in Rockaway on October 25, 1927, the second of the three sons of Frank G. Rodimer and Susan Hiler. He was bap zed at Saint Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway by Monsignor Joseph H. Hewetson whom, forty years later, he would succeed as pastor in Cli on. He was educated in the Rockaway public schools, and then at Seton Hall Preparatory School, then in South Orange. As a high school student he was accepted as a seminarian for the fledgling Paterson Diocese, and a er gradua on from Seton Hall Prep in 1944, he was sent first to Saint Charles Seminary at Catonsville, Maryland, and then to Saint Mary’s Seminary on Paca Street in Bal more. A er college gradua on in 1947, Rodimer was sent to Immaculate Concep on Seminary, Darlington, New Jersey for theological studies. He was selected to complete his final year at The Catholic University of America in Washington where he received the S.T.L. degree in 1951. Bishop Thomas A. Boland ordained Rodimer and his five classmates to the priesthood on May 19, 1951 at Saint John the Bap st Cathedral, Paterson.
Rodimer’s first assignment was a temporary one, as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Camp at Culvers Lake in Sussex County. At the end of the summer, while a ending the funeral of Father William Thompson in Hawthorne, Bishop Boland told him that he was being sent back to Washington for graduate studies in Canon Law. In 1954 Catholic University awarded him the doctor of canon law degree. Upon his return to the diocese he was named assistant chancellor of the diocese and assistant pastor of Saint Brendan’s Parish, Cli on. This marked the beginning of a fi y-year career in the Paterson Diocesan Chancery Office.
The coming of Bishop James J. Navagh as Paterson’s fourth bishop in May 1963 marked a shi in Rodimer’s career. Upon his arrival, Navagh named him his secretary, and nineteen months later, Chancellor of the diocese. Pope Paul VI named him a papal chamberlain (monsignor) in 1963. Rodimer’s experience was broadened by the responsibili es Bishop Navagh entrusted to him and by the confidence the Bishop had in him. He accompanied Navagh to the third session of the Second Va can Council in Rome. At the me of his death Rodimer was one of the last of the American bishops to have been at Va can II. A er Navagh’s sudden death in October 1965, he was succeeded by Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence B. Casey of Rochester, New York. Bishop Casey was not interested in having a priest-secretary and this freed Rodimer to accept pastoral responsibility. While remaining diocesan chancellor, he was named Administrator of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Sparta in April, 1967, and then pastor of Saint Paul’s Parish, Cli on in January, 1968.
Bishop Casey resigned due to ill health on June 14, 1977 and died the following day. The day before Casey’s resigna on, the diocesan Vicar General, Monsignor Joseph R. Brestel, had a stroke and became incapacitated. When the diocesan consultors met to select an interim administrator of the diocese on June 15, Monsignor Rodimer was elected. Rodimer’s experience was varied and extensive. In a quarter-century as a priest, Rodimer had tempered academic training with administra ve and pastoral responsibili es. He was responsible for diocesan ini a ves in the areas of liturgy, communica ons, and social jus ce. He had been on hand for the Second Va can Council, the watershed Catholic experience

A er six months as Diocesan Administrator, Rodimer was named 6th Bishop of Paterson by Pope Paul VI on December 5, 1977. He was ordained and installed by Newark Archbishop Peter L. Gerety on February 28, 1978 in Saint John the Bap st Cathedral with Archbishop Emeritus Thomas A. Boland of Newark, the bishop who had ordained him a priest, as one of the concelebrants.
Rodimer’s more than twenty-six years as bishop is the longest episcopate of any of the Bishops of Paterson. During those years he established twelve new parishes, ordained sixty-seven diocesan priests and over a hundred permanent deacons, and welcomed twenty new priests into the diocese through incardina on. His long-standing interest in the liturgy and emphasis on the liturgical life of the parishes resulted in the building or renova on of more than fi y churches in the diocese, culmina ng in the renova on of the diocesan cathedral of Saint John the Bap st in conjunc on with the observance of the Diocesan 50th Anniversary in December, 1987. He also encouraged the establishment of the Rite of Chris an Ini a on for Adults in the diocese, and led the first Rite of Elec on. Rodimer led the diocese in two successful capital campaigns in 1984 and 2000, and was responsible for the establishment of the Tri-County Scholarship Fund to assist inner-city children in a ending Catholic schools. His emphasis on youth ministry led him to raise the age of Confirma on to the high school years and resulted in his personally Confirming over 100,000 teenagers in his years as a bishop. On a na onal level he served on several commi ees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and was chairman of the Subcommi ee for Sacred Art and Environment.
Bishop Rodimer submi ed his resigna on on his seventy-fi h birthday on October 25, 2002. Nineteen months later Pope John Paul II accepted his resigna on on June 1, 2004, with the appointment of his successor, Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli. In re rement Rodimer took up residence in the Green Pond sec on of Rockaway Township and con nued to be an ac ve presence in the local Church, being present for most diocesan events and o en helping his successor and neighboring bishops with Confirma on. Declining health and mobility occasioned his move to Saint Joseph’s Home of the Li le Sisters of the Poor in Totowa in August, 2017.
During his years as Bishop of Paterson, Bishop Rodimer hosted an annual party for all the bishops of New Jersey on the Feast of Saint Nicholas, the 4th century bishop noted for his charity. Rodimer died at Saint Joseph’s Home during the Hour of Mercy on the Feast of Saint Nicholas, the model bishop, December 6, 2018.
-Reverend Monsignor Raymond J. Kupke, Ph.D. Pastor, Saint Anthony Church, Hawthorne
Bishop Rodimer was always a priest and I know that he was at peace in reaching the end of his earthly journey. The words of his great hero, Pope Saint John XXIII might as well have been his own as he faced death, “My bags are packed.” Having served him for ten years in the Chancery and as his Priest-Secretary, I take this moment to honor him and to commend him to God’s mercy. Like many of you, I have many memories of Bishop Rodimer. He accepted me as a student for the priesthood, ordained me priest, and taught me countless lessons about what it means to be a priest. I am grateful to him beyond measure. He loved the People of God whom he served with great fidelity. Bishop Rodimer would usually end his le ers: “Faithfully yours in Christ.” He surely was. May he rest in peace.

The Third Sunday of Advent already; these days of Advent cascade by with increasing rapidity. We shouldn’t miss the opportunity in this season to immerse ourselves in the beau ful mysteries of our faith. The Third Sunday of Advent is usually everyone’s favorite – there is something about it that speaks to us deeply as it takes its name from the La n entrance an phon to Mass for this year. It is also in our second reading for this liturgy from the Le er of Saint Paul to the Philippians: Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete: modes a vestra nota sit omnibus hominibus: Dominus prope est – to paraphrase this quote from Saint Paul’s Le er to the Philippians (4:4-5): “Rejoice in the Lord always: again I say rejoice. Let your good sense be obvious to all. The Lord is nigh.” As we now more directly prepare ourselves for the Solemnity of the Na vity of the Lord, Christmas, Saint Paul gives us good and encouraging advice. We are encouraged by the Lord’s presence
Continued on Page 6... December 16, 2018 - Third Sunday of Advent Page 5 Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5) among us and we take joy in the gi of being able to encourage one another in the faith.
Christmas is a celebra on of God’s nearness to us in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. Our first reading for this liturgy from the Prophet Zephaniah also takes up our cause for rejoicing in the Incarna on, the Son of God taking on our humanity in flesh and blood: “The L , your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior, he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, he will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at fes vals” (Zephaniah 3:17-18). In a 2007 homily on Gaudete Sunday, Benedict XVI noted that: “the whole of Advent is an invita on to rejoice because ‘the Lord comes,’ because he comes to save us.” That is the central truth of Advent, God comes to save us. That is why we can rejoice no ma er how we feel about life, the future, or the past.
In the midst of our own prepara ons for Christmas we are called to take up the a tude of John the Bap st and look for our direc on, our life, from Christ. John understands his own place in the period of prepara on for the Messiah: “I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will bap ze you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn in unquenchable fire” (Luke 3:16-17). They don’t exactly seem like reassuring words on a Sunday when we are called to “rejoice.” But, in fact, they are. Our challenge is to clear away everything in our lives that stands as a distrac on, an obstacle, to a deeper friendship with the Lord Jesus.
John the Bap st had the gi and the voca on to call others to their truest selves through his preaching and example. When we prac ce jus ce, mercy, and reconcilia on, we too are doing the work of the Bap st by beginning with ourselves and giving others cause for rejoicing through the example of our faith. Our task is to make a pathway open for the Lord to travel thus giving others something to rejoice about by encountering his presence in us, faithful disciples sustained by his word and strengthened by his sacraments, par cularly the Eucharist.
No one can solve all problems, either for individuals or for society generally, but there are opportuni es that we have every day to put our faith into ac on by lightening the burdens of others and showing them that even in difficulty or anxiety we can rejoice because of the nearness of God and the strength that he gives us. But it takes pa ence and perseverance. That is why the words of Saint James’ Le er are so appropriate for Advent and the whole year: “Be pa ent brothers and sisters, un l the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being pa ent with it un l it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be pa ent. Make your hearts firm because the coming of the Lord is at hand” (5:7-8). As we move closer to Christmas we pray for the grace to always pa ently rejoice in the presence of God in our lives and that we respond to his call with the gi of our lives to do his will for us.

Advent is a good me to take the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. Individual confession and absolu on is available on Saturday, December 22nd: 10:00-12:30 PM. The Sacrament of Penance, Reconcilia on, is a wonderful way to prepare for the Christmas celebra on with a heart and mind renewed and freed from heavy burdens. In the Sacrament of Reconcilia on we humbly confess our sinfulness and ask pardon from the Lord Jesus and his Church. People will o en say that they have been away from confession “too long.” Not possible. The Lord is always wai ng for us with the gi of his merciful love that brings us healing and wholeness.
