Buchanan, Chair Professor Emeritus Thomas Turino Professor Gabriel Solis Professor Maria Todorova ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the multilayered connections between music, emotionality, social and cultural belonging, collective memory, and identity discourse. The ethnographic case study for the examination of all these relations and aspects is the Pontic muhabeti or parakathi. Parakathi refers to a practice of socialization and music making that is designated insider Pontic Greek. It concerns primarily Pontic Greeks or Pontians, the descendants of the 1922 refugees from Black Sea Turkey (Gr. Pontos), and their identity discourse of ethno-regionalism. Parakathi references nightlong sessions of friendly socialization, social drinking, and dialogical participatory singing that take place informally in coffee houses, taverns, and households. Parakathi performances are reputed for their strong Pontic aesthetics, traditional character, rich and aesthetically refined repertoire, and intense emotionality. Singing in parakathi performances emerges spontaneously from verbal socialization and emotional saturation. Singing is described as a confessional expression of deeply personal feelings -

BODIES IN THE MARGINS Refiguring the Rebetika as Literature Sophia Schlesinger Faculty Advisor: Andrea Kaston-Tange Macalester English Department Submitted April 25th, 2020 Abstract This thesis engages a literary analysis of a corpus of songs and recordings known as the rebetika (sing. rebetiko), which prospered in the port districts of major cities throughout the Aegean in the early 20th century. Engaging the rebetika as literary texts, I argue, helps us understand how they have functioned as a kind of pressure point on the borders between nation and Other. Without making unproveable biographical claims about the motives of the music progenitors, I examine why so many have reached for the rebetika as texts with which to articulate various political and cultural desires. I argue that it was the ambiguous play between Greek music’s discursive value (its “image”) and the semiotic potential of its sound and music-adjacent practices, that allowed for its double-reception by Euro-Israeli elites and Working-class immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries (Mizrahim). -

Withers University of Pittsburgh, 2010 The video sharing website YouTube represents a vibrant space for sociomusical interaction. The use of the space in Turkey is characterized by a particularly high level of politicization, as seen through the ban of the site in that country (current as of the time of writing). As a musical medium, YouTube provides a space where users can post and view videos that combine music with imagery and commentary. Being one of the most popular international video sharing websites, YouTube might seem to be an apolitical, borderless arena for a completely new kind of interaction. However, videos of Turkish folk songs, which have been used by the state in nationalist discourse, often serves as a forum for expressing nationalist feelings. By focusing on videos of one particular folk song, “Kalenin Bedenleri” (“The Walls of the Castle”), this study analyzes contested representations of Turkish identity. -

Theodorakis visit: June 15,2015 Why do people have the natural desire to meet with superstars of diverse fields, talk to them and take their autographs? I believe that it comes down to sheer respect for their contribution and for having a chance to personally express their admiration and love for their work. Meeting celebrities is not easy since the “Superstars” are, in most cases, inaccessible to the general public for the obvious reasons. So, when the dream finally comes true, it is a major event with long-lasting memories. My own admiration for the work of Mikis Theodorakis goes back more than 50 years. I have seen him perform live from a distance at various venues but never got close or had a chance to chat with him. Ten years ago I corresponded with his personal assistant and came close to setting-up a short visit, but alas, no luck. He had some medical issues at that time and a formal meeting was never scheduled. A new opportunity had arisen a few months ago (May- June 2015). The International Society for Enzymology (ISE), a biomedical society promoting the use of enzymes in diagnostics, was having its annual conference in Corfu, Greece, from June 29 to July 1, 2015. The ISE executive, under the author’s leadership, decided to recognize Mikis contributions to the Greek and international culture by electing him as an honorary lifetime member. Mikis was not fit to travel to Corfu for the ceremony and we arranged to present him with his award at his home in Athens, 2 weeks earlier. -
