“You have to picture this scenario — it’s 40-below Fred Koe outside and 45-below inside, and me, Linda, Kevin, Jamie and Kerry are all carrying hoses and flooding the ice at five in the morning. There were other people around but they were pretty hard to get up at that hour. “So that’s where it all started. It had to be at least 15-be- low to freeze the ice at all. Twenty-below would be pretty good. Once it got that cold you’d flood as quick as you could. Every six hours we used to put a flood on. “Kevin always wanted to practise, always wanted to throw rocks when he was nine-, 10-years-old. He’d put two feet in the hack and heaved it for all he was worth and it barely got over the first hogline. “But before he did that he had to come with me and scrape, pebble and run the rocks on the ice. And then he could throw. And that’s where he started.” It didn’t take the twins long to follow suit. “Kerry was the last one to pick up the game,” recalls Dad. “Like she always says, she’s done much better than the boys, she’s been to more nationals. “There’s a lot of good-natured family rivalry there. The twins both keep representing the Territories. It’s awe- some. Jamie, on Twitter, calls Kerry ‘my evil twin’. But they each support each other, they each watch each other. I mean, Jamie was on Twitter during the whole Hot Shots at Red Deer.” It was a competition Kerry wound up winning. “Jamie was phoning and texting every minute from Inuvik,” Dad reiterates. And Kevin and his family were in the stands at Red Deer by way of support for his sister. “Jamie’s more of a fun kid,” assesses Dad. “Looser. More lively, I’d say. He picked it up quickly. He had more spirit. He enjoys the game. Kevin’s a little cooler, a little calmer under pressure. Kerry’s very similar to Kevin’s demeanour and approach to the game. Not as vocal, not as lively.” Texting and Twittering is a big part of the Koe family’s modus operandi nowadays. “We’re sitting at home and we can’t go to all the events and Kevin’s here and Jamie’s here and Kerry’s there,” says Dad. “I know Linda spends an awful lot of time on the refresh button. And thank God for live streaming now, we can keep up with what’s going on. “You know, curling has been a major factor in the bonding of our family? But it’s funny. Mike Gaudet will be seeking redemption of sorts at the Saskatoon Tim Hortons Brier. Gaudet, who skipped a Charlottetown team to the Prince Edward Island men’s title on Jan. 30 at Cornwall, P.E.I., played third at the London Brier a year ago for Ed- die MacKenzie. That team finished with an inglorious 1-10 record. A Summerside native, Gaudet skipped Is- land reps at two previous Briers — 1994 at Red Deer and 2007 at Hamilton. His teams finished 2-9 in each instance. This time around, with Tyler MacKen- zie, Tyler Harris and Sean Clarey in front, Gaudet won six of seven matches to win P.E.I., defeating former Canadian junior champion of Charlottetown 7-5 in the final skirmish. Backing up Gallant were Eddie MacKen- zie, Anson Carmody and Alex MacFadyen. Gaudet exploded for three in the fourth end to overhaul a 2-0 Gallant lead but the younger skip posted a single in the fifth to square the account. The sixth end was blanked and Gallant stole a single in the seventh.
