The KDevelop IDE closes this gap and makes it a joy to work within a complete, integrated development environment, combining the use of the GNU standard development tools such as the g++ compiler and the gdb debugger with the advantages of a GUI-based environment that automates all standard actions and allows the developer to concentrate on the work of writing software instead of managing command-line tools. It also offers direct and quick access to source files and docu- mentation. KDevelop primarily aims to provide the best means to rapidly set up and write KDE software; it also supports extended features such as GUI designing and translation in con- junction with other tools available especially for KDE development. The KDevelop IDE itself is published under the GNU Public License (GPL), like KDE, and is therefore publicly avail- able at no cost—including its source code—and it may be used both for free and for commer- cial development. -

How to use Geany Geany is essentially a text editor. To begin writing your program, you will need to create a new, blank file. Click on New. A new file called untitled will appear. You may start writing. As soon as you do, the option to save the file will be available. If the name of your file is in red, it means that it hasn’t been saved since the last change that is made. Click on the button called Save next to the New button. Save the file in a directory you had previously created before you launched Geany and name it main.cpp. All of the files you will write and submit to will be named specifically main.cpp. Once the .cpp has been specified, Geany will turn on its color coding feature for the C++ template. Hans Hagen VOORJAAR 2004 21 The Scite – TEX integration Abstract Editors are a sensitive, often emotional subject. Some editors have exactly the properties a software designer or a writer desires and one gets attached to it. Still, most computer experts such as TEX users often are use three or more different editors each day. Scite is a modern programmers editor which is very flexible, very configurable, and easily extended. We integrated Scite with TEX, CONTEXT, LATEX, METAPOST and viewer and succeeded in that it is now possible to design and write your texts, manuscripts, reports, manuals and books with the Scite editor without having to leave the editor to compile and view your work. The article describes what is available and what you need with special emphasis on highlighting commands with lexers. About Scite Scite is a source code editor written by Neil Hodgson. After playing with several editors we found that this editor is quite configurable and extendible. At PRAGMA ADE we use TEXEDIT, an editor written long ago in Niklaus Wirth’s MODULA as well as a platform independent reimplementation of it called TEXWORK written in PERL/TK. Although our editors possess some functionality that is not (yet) present in Scite, we decided to use Scite because it frees us from the editor maintenance chore. Installing Scite Installing Scite is straightforward. We assume below that you use MS WINDOWS but for other operating systems installation is not much different. Text Editing in UNIX A short introduction to vi, pico, and gedit Copyright 20062009 Stewart Weiss About UNIX editors There are two types of text editors in UNIX: those that run in terminal windows, called text mode editors, and those that are graphical, with menus and mouse pointers. The latter require a windowing system, usually X Windows, to run. If you are remotely logged into UNIX, say through SSH, then you should use a text mode editor. It is possible to use a graphical editor, but it will be much slower to use. I will explain more about that later. 2 CSci 132 Practical UNIX with Perl Text mode editors The three text mode editors of choice in UNIX are vi, emacs, and pico (really nano, to be explained later.) vi is the original editor; it is very fast, easy to use, and available on virtually every UNIX system. The vi commands are the same as those of the sed filter as well as several other common UNIX tools. emacs is a very powerful editor, but it takes more effort to learn how to use it. pico is the easiest editor to learn, and the least powerful. pico was part of the Pine email client; nano is a clone of pico. 3 CSci 132 Practical UNIX with Perl What these slides contain These slides concentrate on vi because it is very fast and always available. First, I’ll describe my own experience randomly trying various TEX environments. I suspect that some other users have had a similar introduction to TEX; and perhaps other users have just used the environment that was available at their workplace or school. Then I’ll consider some categories for thinking about options in TEX setups. Last, I’ll suggest some follow-on steps. Since I use Microsoft Windows as my computer operating system, this note focuses on environments that are available for Windows.1 2 My random path to choosing a TEX environment 2 I started using TEX in the late 1990s. 1But see my offer in Section 4. 2 While I started using TEX, I switched from TEX to using LATEX as soon as I discovered LATEX existed.
