34th Annual Summer Survival Guide 2020 COVID online edition Welcome to the 34th Annual Summer Survival Guide From Your Pullman Radio Stations For 34 years, Pullman Radio has produced the Summer Survival Guide. Over the years it has become a valuable summertime companion for longtime residents as well as newcomers and visitors to our area. This year, along with everything else, it is being done differently. We have included as much information as we can, but also know that right now everything is very fluid. We hope that many acitvities in our Guide are able to still take place, and that many other activities will be able to happen. We ask you to visit the websites and social media of the businesses and events throughout our book for more up to date information. We hope that you find thisGuide valuable in finding things to do, places to go, recipes for food and fun, along with the area’s most comprehensive calendar of regional events.

We would like to extend a special thanks to Margo Balzarini for compiling much of the information in the Guide. She spent countless hours researching and redoing the calendar with all the changes due to COVID-19. Thank you also to our editor Danielle Kallaher. To everyone who contributed recipes, calendar events, articles, and things to do ... we truly could not do this without you!

We are able to provide this guide to you for free because of our gracious advertisers. Could you please do us a favor, and stop by or give them a call to let them know that you appreciate having this free Summer Survival Guide each year. They value your feedback, and so do we. If you have any ideas or events you would like to have included in next year’s Guide, please let us know: Pullman Radio, PO Box 1, Pullman, WA 99163 or email [email protected].

Robin’s Chip Cookies Robin McDougle, mom of Hallie, Elise and Evan shared this recipe with Danielle during the Stay Home restrictions. They quickly became a staple for the Kallaher family. These cookies are delicious, and can be done with a variety of chips to make them just how you like them.

1 cup butter, softened 1 cup cake flour 3/4 brown sugar 1 3/4 cup flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp baking powder 2 eggs 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp salt 3-4 cups chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or peanut butter chips - or mix them however you like.

Mix the butter, brown sugar and sugar, add eggs and vanilla and mix. Add cake flour, cake flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and mix. Stir in chips. Scoop cookies onto cookie sheet and bake for 7 minutes at 400-degrees. If you wish to make larger bakery style cookies, you will need to cook longer. 4 Area Chambers of Commerce When you want to know what is happening in a community, local Chambers of Commerce and Visitors Bureaus are excellent resources for picking up detailed information on many travel opportunities. There are many businesses that have come and gone in downtown Pullman. For one reason or another, businesses have come and gone, but a few have been staples to the downtown scene. Rico’s Smokehouse and Pub and Neill’s Flowers and Gifts are the two businesses that have been downtown for 100 years. They have survived through wars, depression, and pandemics, but through it all they have remained in Pullman to serve their community. Neill’s Flowers is celebrating 100 years at their Main Street location this summer. Roy Neill started Campus View Greenhouses in 1909 on Military Hill. He grew and sold flowers in the greenhouse, and set up a flower stand inside Dutton’s Confectionery in downtown. In 1920, Roy and and his wife Maude decided they needed their own presence on Main Street so they opened Neill’s Sweet Shop. A soda and sandwich shop with a flower counter. For the first 20 years, it served as a combination fountain, grill and flower shop. In 1940 they closed the fountain and grill and changed from Neill’s Sweet Shop to Neill’s Flowers & Gifts, and closed the greenhouse in 1943. Shortly after the remodel, their son Greg returned to Pullman after serving in World War 2, and continued to operate Neill’s with his wife Tillie. In 1978, the Neill’s sold the shop to Mitch and Mary Jo Chandler. The Chandler’s have continued to operate the flower shop in the same location to the present time. This spring, the Chandler family was given the opportunity to bring a new version of Neill’s Sweet Shop back to downtown, when the Daily Grind Coffeehouse closed their doors. Neill’s Coffee and Ice Cream will be opening this summer in the former coffeehouse location, which coincides with the 100 anniversary of Roy and Maude opening their Main Street location. In July we will be opening Neill’s Coffee and Ice Cream bringing back ice cream, shakes, soda’s and other great treats. They are excited to return a part of Pullman’s history to downtown Pullman.

It’s a delicious, quick pan bread. It is reprinted here by permission of Joseph’s Grainery.

1 cup hard red wheat flour 1 cup barley flour 2 Tbsp baking soda Pinch of salt 2 Tbsp honey 2 Tbsp vegetable oil 1 Tbsp molasses 1 Tbsp brown sugar 1 1/4 cup buttermilk

Mix dry ingredients together. Add wet ingredients. Mix by hand until combined in even consistency. Spread evenly in a 10 inch well seasoned cast iron skillet. Skillet should be well greased with liberal spray of Pam or other vegetable oil spray.

Bake for 15 minutes in a 400 degree oven. At the end of 15 minutes, lower the temperature to 350 degree and bake for an additional 10 minutes. It usually will not need a full 10 minutes. Check at 7 minutes or less.

Best served warm. Will last only a few days in storage if there is any left! 41 Strawberry Sauce Mary Jo Chandler shared this recipe from her longtime friend Val Pruitt. It is delicious, and tastes amazing on ice cream.

Mix together and put in the fridge over night: 1 lb strawberries rinsed, hulled and thickly sliced 1 1/3 cups of sugar

The following day, combine sliced strawberries and the items below in a medium saucepan: 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (1/2 lemon) 1 small bag frozen strawberries

Place over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer 20-23 minutes or until sauce is thickened, stirring occasionally. Mash the berries after cooking. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.

Serve over ice cream along with the Fried Crunchy Ice Cream Topping from page 62. The Palouse’s New Country Leader!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we’d like to share a few that we’d like you to continue to keep in mind as our communities begin to open back up, in hopes that we can stay open and healthy. You can find more information by visiting cdc.gov.

•Wash your hands using soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. o If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. o Wearing gloves when using a shopping cart or using an ATM will not necessarily protect you from getting COVID-19 and may still lead to the spread of germs. The best way to protect yourself from germs when running errands and after going out is to regularly wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid close contact with others. Especially those who are sick, even inside your home. If possible, maintain 6 feet between the person who is sick and other household members.

• Put distance between yourself and other people outside of your home. o Remember that some people without symptoms may be able to spread virus. o Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from other people. o Keeping distance from others is especially important for people who are at a higher risk of getting very sick.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when around others o You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. o Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when you have to go out in public, for example to the grocery store or to pick up other necessities. o Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. o The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. o Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker. o Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.

• Cover coughs and sneezes o If you are around others and do not have on your cloth face covering, remember to always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you 58 cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow and do not spit. o Throw used tissues in the trash. o Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks. o If surfaces are dirty, clean them. Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection. o Then, use a household disinfectant.

• Monitor Your Health o Be alert for syptoms. Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of smell or taste, or other symptoms of COVID-19 o Especially important if you are running essential errands, going into the office or workplace, and in settings where it may be difficult to keep a physical distance of 6 feet. o Take your temperature if symptoms develop. Don’t take your temperature within 30 minutes of exercising or after taking medications that could lower your temperature, like acetaminophen. o Follow CDC guidance if symptoms develop.

Home Made Hand Sanitizer Many of us have headed ot the store to get some hand sanitizer to have on hand when handwashing is difficult to not find any on the shelf. We took our search to Pinterest, and found many to choose from. This one was based on handrub formulations from the World Health Organization.

4 cups Isopropyl Alcohol 70% (must be at least 60%) 3 Tbsp Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) 1 - 2 Tbsp glycerine Mixing container and individual bottles for dispensing

1. Pour the isopropyl alcohol into a clean container. It’s easiest to mix the sanitzer directly in the bottle in which you’ll store it. 2. Add 2T of hydrogen peroxide 3. Add 1-2T of glycerine. Make sure you get all the lycerine out of the spoon since it flows slowly. WHO only recommends 1T but two makes the sanitizer a litte easier to rub on. 4. Gently mix the ingredients together by either stirring or seasling and gently shaking the bottle. 5. Dispense the sanitzier into smaller individual bottles. This is a great way to refill sanitzer bottles which have run out. 59 Helpful Area Phone Numbers

She shared this recipe that she has made several times and is a crowd pleaser. 1 lb chicken, cooked and cut into bite sized pieces 3/4 lb deli ham, cooked and cut into bite size squares 1 15-ounce jar Alfredo sauce 3 Tbsp dijon mustard 1 12-ounce package won ton wrappers 2 cups Swiss cheese, shredded Press one won ton wrapper in the bottom of each of the cups of your mini muffin pan using your fingers. Add one, two or three slices of ham to the bottom of each cup. Put one or two pieces of chicken on top of the ham, they need to fit in a single layer. Whisk together your Alfredo sauce and dijon mustard. Scoop about a tablespoon of the sauce onto each cup, on top of the ham and chicken layers - using a cookie scoop makes it easier. You want them to be nice and saucy, but not smothered. Set aside leftover sauce, you can use it as a dipping sauce. Sprinkle Swiss cheese on each cup in a nice even layer. Don’t put on too much as it will make a mess in your oven. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Be sure to check it at 10 minutes to be sure you are burning the corners of the won tons. You want the tips to be a nice golden brown. Use a butter knife to gently slip down the sides of each one to pry it out - they should pop out easily. 65
