Manyand mingled feelings pervadehis mind, and hopeand fear vie with one another and alternatelyovercome one another, until at lengththe author finds someslight relief for his feelingsand a kind of excusefor his hook, by writing a preface,in which he states brieflythe natureand characterof the work,and begs the pardonof thereader for hispresumption in undertaking it. A winter in Kashmir mustbe experiencedto he realised. The air is most invigorating,and the* quiet is sublime. Even an ordinarily briny rniKsionnryenjoyH much leisurethrough sucha seasonin this beautifulcountry. I have now spent two long quiet wintershere, and this "Dictionary of Kashrnirf Proverbsand Sayings5*is the result of many hours of labour, Btu^y, and anxiety,during theseIcisurable months. As a missionary,on arriving in the Valley, I at oncedevoted my attentionto the study of the language;and believing tilt Proverbstaught "the real people'sspeech,** discovered "the genius,wit andspirit of a nation," and embodiedits **current and practical philosophy,5* iV PREFACE. I quicklybegan to makea collectionof them.* This book,, I believe,contains nearly all the Proverbsand Proverbial sayingsnow extant among the Kashmiri people. They have beengathered from varioussources. Sometimes the great and learnedPandit instinctively uttered a proverb in my hearing; sometimesI got the barber to tell me a thing or two, as hepolled my head; and sometimesthe poorcoolie said somethingworth knowing, as carrying my load he tramped along beforeme. A few learned Muhammadan and Hindii friends also,have very materiallyhelped rne in this collectionand its arrangement;and here I againheartily acknowledgetheir kind and ready service. Actuin est. It is done ; and now the manuscript has to be sentto the publishers,and noticeshave to be postedto the differentpapers and journals interested to advertisethe work as " in the press." What will the little world say, into whose handsit maychance to arrive? How will the philologist,the ethnologist,the antiquarian,the studentof folklore, and the generalreader regard this which has cost some considerable time and study. Dear reader, in order that your criticism may not be so hard as it might, perhaps,otherwise be, please permit me to remind you that Kashmir proper is but a small country, a little vale surrounded by snow-cappedmountain ranges, about eighty-four miles long from north-west to south-east,and from twenty to twenty-five miles in width, with an areaof about1,850 square miles; that the Kashmiri * '" The genius, wit and spirit of a nation are discovered in its proverbs." - Bacon. 11Proverbs embody the current and practical philosophy of an age or tuition."-- Fleming. *" Proverbsteach the real people'sspeech, and open up the hitherto sealed book of the native mind,"-John Beames. PREFACE* languageis virtuallyminus a Dictionaryand Grammar,,and that besidesone or two very unimportantworks* written in the Persiancharacter, all trueKashmiri books are printed in a kindof mongrel-Devanagaricharacter called Sharada, which onlya verysmall proportion of the populationcan properly read;that the Kashmirilanguage itself is very difficult,and is spokendifferently by differentpersons-the Hindus and Muhammadans,especially, speaking distinct dialects; that informationfrom booksof travel, &c., like Vigne's,.Hdgel's, Knight's,Drew's, Bellew's and others, is very crude,scanty, and contradictory,concerning the manners and customs of the Kashmiri; and that this individual is not naturally so com- municativeas might be expectedfrom his cheerylook and humorousdisposition. " Horacesays somewhere" Nonumprematur in annum; andperhaps it would have beenbetter to havekept by me whatI havewritten, for nineyears before publishing it. But otherwork demandsmuch of my leisuretime,,-the prepara- tion of a Kashmiri Dictionary,of which theseproverbs, and the words that contain them, form but a stepping-stone,and the translations of the <4Psalms of David" and " Proverbs of Solomon," which have beendeferred only becauseof the non- appearanceas yet of the revisededition of the Old Testament. However, I trust the reader will accept rny various excuses andforgive any error,whether in the romanizing,or the style, or the information, as the casemay be. Vi PREFACE* I heard; but the differentdialects made, this very confusing work; and therewere some sounds which could not possibly be written like Roman-Urdu,except with the following addi- tional vowels :- An o as the German o, but short. An o as the German o, but long and drawling, Thesetwo vowels,I believe,exist in Hungarian. An u as the German u. An u as the German M, but long and drawling. In addition to these there is a sound which is something like a very shorti, to whichI havegiven the nameof TMy &er; it is frequently the sign of the instrumental caseas a dog,huni by a dog,&c. This sound,I believe,is to be found in Russian, and is in that language written as/. In the Roman character this soundwill be representedby the simpleletter i9 and in orderthat this i may alwaysappear, I havealways written the finalhe (hd,e muJthtafi).With the exception of this i or fchiydli eer, I have, however, avoided introducing any diacritical points.
