Mary “Murl ”Feldschau March 26, 1929 - December 21, 2020 Celebrating the Life of Mary “Murl ”Feldschau Wednesday, December 30, 2020 2:00 p.m. One City Church Beaumont, Texas “For the Rest of Mine” by Trace Adkins Welcome Tim Hanley Family Remarks “Look For Me” by Christi Miranda Message “Love the Lord” Deuteronomy 6:1-5 (NKJV) Pastor Rick White Closing Prayer Pastor Rick White “Beulah Land” by Shenandoah 1 Mary “Murl” Feldschau, born to Burl and Mary Chance in Hemphill, Texas on March 26, 1929 graduated to her home in heaven December 21, 2020 at the age of 91. Mrs. Feldschau resided in Beaumont Colony, Kountze, Texas at the time of her passing and was a member of One City Church in Beaumont. Murl is survived by son, Mike Feldschau and wife, Pat of Nederland; daughter, Debbie Feldschau Hayes and husband, David of Kountze; son, Randy Feldschau and wife, Suzann of Beaumont, six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two brothers, Rev. Jimmy “Jim” Leroy Chance, Lawrence “Arlon” Chance and wife, Sally both of Fred, Texas along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry C. Feldschau, parents, Burl and Mary Chance, brother, James “Dalon” Chance, sister, Geraldine “Mutt” Easley, brother, Alfred Paul “Buster” Chance and brother, Douglas Rudolph “Boots” Chance. As a teen, Murl sold tickets at the Jefferson Theater box office where, in 1946 the motion picture “It’s a Wonderful Life” premiered, with James Stewart and Frank Capra in attendance. This fact seems prophetic, for her life truly was wonderful. Later in life, she worked at First Bank & Trust in Groves for 18 years as a loan officer and executive secretary to the bank president before retiring in 1982 to travel with her husband, Harry. -

DOLEMITE IS MY NAME Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski FINAL IN THE BLACK We hear Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" playing softly. VOICE I ain't lying. People love me. INT. DOLPHIN'S - DAY CU of a beat-up record from the 1950s. On the paper cover is a VERY YOUNG Rudy, in a tuxedo. It says "Rudy Moore - BUGGY RIDE" RUDY You play this, folks gonna start hoppin' and squirmin', just like back in the day. A hand lifts the record up to the face of RUDY RAY MOORE, late '40s, black, sweet, determined. RUDY When I sang this on stage, I swear to God, people fainted! Ambulance man was picking them off the floor! When I had a gig, the promoter would warn the hospital: "Rudy's on tonight -- you're gonna be carrying bodies out of the motherfucking club!" We see that we are in a RADIO BOOTH. A sign blinks "On The Air." The DJ, ROJ, frowns at the record. ROJ "Buggy Ride"? RUDY Wasn't no small-time shit. ROJ GodDAMN, Rudy! That record's 1000 years old! I've got Marvin Gaye singin' "Let's Get It On"! I can't be playin' no "Buggy Ride." (beat) Look, I have 60 seconds. I have to cue the next tune. Hm! Rudy bites his lip and walks away. Roj tries to go back to his job. He reaches for a Sly Stone single -- when Rudy suddenly bounds back up. RUDY How about "Step It Up and Go"? That's a real catchy rhythm-and-blues number. -

MORGAN: You don’t find this strange? (beat) The secret interview at a casual restaurant - using code names, for god’s sake - driving out to meet the woman I’m theoretically replacing at a backup television studio in the middle of nowhere? BRANDON: I just figured it was par for the course in the news biz. Or a ritual sacrifice. (beat) That last part was a joke. MORGAN: (without humor) It was funny. BRANDON: Morgan - Helen looks harmless enough - MORGAN: (chiding him) Ms. Macklowe - News 3’s executive producer - is no one to be afraid of. Unless you’re trying to hide a big story from her. BRANDON: And she said the job was yours. MORGAN: If Connie Ambrose signs off. (beat) Well, after all these years, I guess she has earned that right. BRANDON: There’s that accent. Does it always come back when you come home? MORGAN: No. And it’s not home. Not for years now. (beat) There - she’s turning up ahead. BRANDON: I see it. Wow. This is off the map. MORGAN: It’s their old studio. Apparently it’s the only place Connie will work. BRANDON: OK, that’s a little weird. MORGAN: I guess if you’re as big as she is, you get what you want. (explaining) (beat) There it is. On the right. SOUND: Car turns, road gets bumpier BRANDON: (beat) You know this would be a huge change for us. -

And people are always asking me, what was that like? Really not that different from here. I mean we played cricket, which is just a spicer version of baseball. And we prayed a lot. Well not a lot, just five times a day. And we marry someone our parents find for us. Arranged marriage, you know. For me, it was probably that we got episodes of the A-Team a little bit later. And by a little bit later, I mean we just got episode two. But other than that, it was exactly the same. A CREDIT SEQUENCE PLAYS. Kumail drives an Uber around Chicago with VARIOUS PASSENGERS in the backseat. INT. TRIPLE DOOR - PRESENT DAY - NIGHT Kumail walks into the comedy club as MARY is doing a set on stage. CHRIS intercepts Kumail as he walks backstage. CHRIS There's no bad crowds dude. Only bad comedians. KUMAIL You complain about the crowd like all the time. CHRIS Yeah, but that's when they're really bad. KUMAIL So like ninety percent of the time, they're really bad? 2 CHRIS Will you just watch and give me notes tonight? If we both give each other notes, I think it would be helpful. KUMAIL Your notes are just to add more "fucks" into the bit. CHRIS Fuck's a funny word. -

World-weary, has probably never left Wisconsin. Roger Early 30s male, small town alcoholic. Mark’s friend and former drinking buddy and Pam’s cousin. Roger and Lori have pronounced northern Wisconsin or “Yooper” (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) dialects. SETTING A recent fall in Carp Lake, a small town in northern Wisconsin This play can be performed with or without an intermission. In fact, judging was so close in a number of cases that winners tied. The happy result of this was that it enabled us to give more awards. We did not, however, receive funding this year to publish Scribendi 2008 in hard copy form. We hope, one day, to find a funding source for the resumption of printing and binding. This year's online version is designed by Natalie Young, who undertook the project as part of her MFA work at Lesley University. Natalie has designed Scribendi to be printable in a number of different ways, in part or whole, in black and white or color. We thank Natalie for her hours of work. We also thank Bria Jones, who has served as this year's intern. Melissa Hislop and Kristin Clove of the English Department staff also deserve thanks for finding time amidst their busy schedules to work on the contest. I have done stand-up for years and I usually don’t play to rooms this big. This is wonderful. So the topic is the ethics of humor. Now let me begin with an apology, see I’m a philosopher, and the way philosophers actually present is that we write papers and at our conferences we sit behind desks and we read our papers to the audience.
