Thailand is going “Green”. Visit and explore the country’s eco-friendly, attractions, services and more. Thai Tourism is going GREEN. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is asking you to ‘Enjoy Travel and Care for the Environment’. They are asking this of all parties concerned in tourism - you the tourists, hotels, attractions, transportation and tour agents. Reducing our carbon footprint, reducing pollution and maintaining and improving our environment are goals all of us should share. Message from the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Dear Readers, Every year, the hotel business is a part of the service sector which plays an important role in generating a large amount of income for Thailand. However, at present, while global warming results in climate change and there is an increase in severe disasters, international tourists have become more concerned about the significance of the global warming effects. Therefore, entrepreneurs of hotels and other forms of accommodation, besides focusing on the business benefits, have paid more attention on the campaign for decreasing the effects of global warming and protecting the environment. This in turn tends to be the first alternatives for tourists who would like to visit Thailand. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is aware of the effects of global warming, and has been supporting the supporting the operation of green hotels around the country which can provide visitors with a memorable impression and satisfy their needs. In this regard, TAT, in cooperation with the Green Leaf foundation and Red Mango Company Limited, has published the guidebook, Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand, with the hope that this would be beneficial for all stakeholders in the tourism industry, visitors, and the interested public. On this occasion, I would like to thank all hotels and resorts for their cooperation and participation in this campaign, and we wish the promotion of green hotels would contribute to environmental conservation and the growth of sustainable tourism in Thailand as well. SURAPHON SVETASRENI Governor Message from the President of the Message from the President Green Leaf Foundation Today, global warming has become a pressing issue affecting all people and economies. Immediate action must be taken to protect our natural resources and safeguard our future. The tourism industry acknowledged that it has an important part to play in reducing emissions and acting in a responsible and sustainable manner. As a result, several Thai and international organizations joined hands to establish an important environmental initiative called The Green Leaf Foundation. Partners who worked to create the foundation include The Tourism Authority of Thailand, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, United Nations Environment Program, Thai Hotels Association, and the Association for Development of Environmental Quality. From the outset, the intention was to set clear standards for hotel and tourism operators in order to help them implement a good code of practice, save energy and conserve the environment. The main activities of the Green Leaf Foundation focus on mitigating and adapting to climate change by saving energy in accordance with government policy. The foundation is united in its goal to find the best environmentally friendly solutions for the hotel and tourism industry. Part of the initiative is also the Health Promotion Hotel Programme which not only implemented a smoke free environment for hotels but also actively promotes health tourism across the entire industry. With constant reports concerning global warming and climate change, more people and businesses are looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Green tourism requires a balance between promotion and environmental protection. To better serve in Thailand’s quest to preserve the environment and to achieve sustainable tourism, TAT has identified four Green Initiatives. • Raising awareness of green tourism operators and services through the creation of a database of environmentally responsible businesses. • Recognizing, developing and rewarding green tourism role models. • Organizing green tourism conferences, meetings and educational seminars. • Implementing a “Seven Greens” program that helps in the accomplishment of the above three initiatives and that also promotes increased corporate responsibility (CSR). The “Seven Greens” program targets seven needs, including the need for everyone to take care of the planet. The “Seven Greens” are as follows. Green Heart Tourists are asked to be environmentally aware and to take an active role in the efforts to preserve and protect the environment at all tourist locales.
