In Springfield, she addressed her legislative colleagues, asking them to support same-sex marriage in this state. E. Patrick Johnson talks about ‘Sweet Tea’ BY Yasmin Nair

When E. Patrick Johnson conceived his book Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South—An Oral History, he did not think the project would ever extend beyond the printed word. Published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2008, the book was a collection of oral narratives. But halfway through the research and interviewing process, Johnson realized he would need to do more. As he explained to Windy City Times in a 2008 interview: “[H] earing them tell their stories in their unique E. Patrick Johnson. What would Sunday-Funday be without brunch, cocktails and fierce fashion? It wouldn’t. That was the scene at the Chicago House Spring Brunch and Fashion Show at the Harold Washington Library May 2. With more than 400 attendees, the event boasted a who’s who amongst Chicago’s LGBT community and its allies. And, this year’s circus theme, coined “Cirque,” showcased jug- glers and performers on stilts as well as a dazzling runway show emceed by musician and comedian Amy Armstrong. Beyond the glitz and glamour, however, the fundraiser had a much more important purpose: To raise money to provide housing and support services to people affected by HIV/AIDS, homelessness, substance abuse and mental illness. “This event and others like it helps people. The money we raise goes to serve people who may not qualify for a government contract, or who might otherwise fall through the cracks. We are so grateful for everyone’s continued support for this vitally important organiza- tion,” said Chicago House CEO the Rev. Stan Sloan. See www.chicagohouse.org.
