Both were important factors in the growth of Utah. Both are included in the exciting history of Park City. Silver Mining At one time, Park City mines were some of the richest in the United States! Silver mines, discovered in Park City, brought wealth, power, influence and opportunity to a few lucky men. While most miners remained poor and worked in dangerous conditions underground, a few used luck, hard work and knowledge to become extremely rich! One of these miners was Thomas Kearns. Kearns was a teenager when he left home to seek his fortune in the mines. After arriving in Park City, he first worked as a mucker (a poor worker who shoveled ore into the underground ore wagons). He used his knowledge of mining and ore veins to stake a claim in a mine that he thought might be rich in silver. His hunch proved to be correct, and he became a millionaire! The Silver King Mine, in Park City, provided this Irish Catholic miner with great wealth and power. At the beginning of the 1900’s, successful miners like, Thomas Kearns, changed the image of downtown Salt Lake City by building fabulous mansions on South Temple. The Kearns Mansion, an elegant reminder of Park City’s exciting past, was donated to the state and is now Utah’s Governor’s Mansion.

ASC TRAINING CENTER ALPINE – BIATHLON – NORDIC – SNOWBOARD FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BIATHLON HOW DO I JOIN ASC BIATHLON? To join the ASC Biathlon Program, you must first complete an Intro to Biathlon Clinic where you will learn the basics of biathlon marksmanship and what is expected in terms of safety on our range. Upon completion of the clinic, you will be eligible to join either our Devo or Novice Masters biathlon teams (depending on your age). These teams offer more in depth coaching and development of not only your shooting, but skiing technique and overall fitness. I'VE NEVER SHOT A RIFLE BEFORE. CAN I JOIN THE TEAM? Yes, you may! You must still go through the process of joining the team listed above, but no prior shooting experience is required. I'VE NEVER CROSS COUNTRY SKIED BEFORE. CAN I JOIN THE TEAM? Having little to no skiing background will make your involvement in biathlon difficult. Marksmanship is such a detailed and complex sport, it will be difficult to learn shooting and skiing at the same time. There is also a safety component to factor in; someone who is not competent skiing with a rifle is a danger to everyone on the team. Our suggestion is to take a season and commit to refining your ski technique before considering biathlon. I HAVE A 'GUN'. CAN I USE IT ON THE BIATHLON RANGE? Only Biathlon-specific .22 caliber rifles are permitted on the biathlon range. MY CHILD IS INTERESTED IN BIATHLON. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? This is great to hear! At ASC we value rifle safety above all else.

  • Comparison of Pacing Strategies Between Sprint and Individual Biathlon Competitions: Evaluation of Speed and Heart Rate Profiles
Master’s thesis in Sport science Comparison of Pacing Strategies between Sprint and Individual biathlon competitions: Evaluation of Speed and Heart Rate Profiles submitted to the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science Leopold-Franzens University, Innsbruck submitted by Daniel Langegger, BSc. Supervisor Univ.-Prof. DDr. Martin Burtscher 2nd Supervisor Univ.-Prof. Dr. Øyvind Sandbakk, PhD Trondheim, 16.2.2019 ABSTRACT The presented thesis aimed to investigate pacing profiles in two different types of biathlon races, the sprint and the individual discipline. Biathlon competition events in a 10-km sprint and 20-km individual discipline event were analyzed during 2 consecutive days by an integrated Heart Rate (HR) monitor and Global Positioning System (GPS). Nine elite male -1 biathletes (HRpeak 197 ± 7 beats min ), who regularly competed on National Championship races, were tested in the cross-country skating technique. Only comparable sections of the race were analyzed between disciplines and sprint laps 1-3 were equated with the starting lap, middle race lap and final lap in individual discipline, respectiviely, individual lap 1, 3 and 5. For results, speed profiles were viewed in relation to exercise intensity monitored by HR and further designated to a predefined pacing strategy. Results for pacing revealed positive pacing in the sprint competition, whilst reverse J-shaped pacing was found in the individual event. Sprint results demonstrated higher average speed in uphill and downhill sections (+ ∼4%, p <.001), respectively, in uphill sections (+ ∼10%, p <.001) throughout the race. HR profiles in individual were higher in both, uphill and downhill sections in the starting lap, and revealed higher HR profiles in sprint in the final lap (p <.001).
