Movie Review: Insidious(2010) Directed by: James Wan ÒMG!! The devil-monster entered Josh's (Patrick Wilson's) body. What's going to happen next?' is the first thing to come in my mind after watching this movie. Believe me this movie is so indulging that you can't stop yourself getting that thought. Its equally terrifying right form the beginning. Yes, I have never seen such a spine chilling opening sequence ever in any movie. The way it is presented: the colour tone, sound effects etc. really signal that something terrifying is about to come. Music composer Joseph Bishara and cinematographer John Leonetti have done an excellent job in this regard. Unlike other films in this genre, it is very well written and deftly handled. And for a horror admirer like me, this movie satisfied my thirst after a long time. I have seen a lot of horror movies and consistently look for some really terrifying horror stuffs, and finally I got this one. It forced me to cover my eyes with hands several times. Though some of its out of the world concepts like "astral traveller" and "the further" will bother you like "what is all this crap?", but once you accept them you are really going to enjoy it. Also there are certain moments in the movie that draw disbelief, like one can really question "how can the lady send anyone into the further?" or "how can voice from the present world reach the further?", but stuffs like these are unavoidable in any horror movie. Even the best ones have them. You will also find some weird stuff like the demon lives in a house, works in a 2 storey office outfitted with antiques, and listens to music. But who knows? Maybe this is the way they live. Overall, Insidious is certainly good, but it can entertain you only if you are ready to live in the alternate reality offered by it. Siddhant Saurabh 12715 1.

Anton Karl Kozlovic Murray Leeder’s exciting new book sits comfortably alongside The Haunted Screen: Ghosts in Literature & Film (Kovacs), Ghost Images: Cinema of the Afterlife (Ruffles), Dark Places: The Haunted House in Film (Curtis), Popular Ghosts: The Haunted Spaces of Everyday Culture (Blanco and Peeren), The Spectralities Reader: Ghost and Haunting in Contemporary Cultural Theory (Blanco and Peeren), The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film: Spectral Identities (Kröger and Anderson), and The Spectral Metaphor: Living Ghosts and the Agency of Invisibility (Peeren) amongst others. Within his Introduction Leeder claims that “[g]hosts have been with cinema since its first days” (4), that “cinematic double exposures, [were] the first conventional strategy for displaying ghosts on screen” (5), and that “[c]inema does not need to depict ghosts to be ghostly and haunted” (3). However, despite the above-listed texts and his own reference list (9–10), Leeder somewhat surprisingly goes on to claim that “this volume marks the first collection of essays specifically about cinematic ghosts” (9), and that the “principal focus here is on films featuring ‘non-figurative ghosts’—that is, ghosts supposed, at least diegetically, to be ‘real’— in contrast to ‘figurative ghosts’” (10). In what follows, his collection of fifteen essays is divided across three main parts chronologically examining the phenomenon. Part One of the book is devoted to the ghosts of precinema and silent cinema. In Chapter One, “Phantom Images and Modern Manifestations: Spirit Photography, Magic Theater, Trick Films, and Photography’s Uncanny”, Tom Gunning links “Freud’s uncanny, the hope to use modern technology to overcoming [sic] death or contact the afterlife, and the technologies and practices that led to cinema” (10).

The first sequel to James Wan's "Poltergeist" homage/ripoff features a couple of set pieces that Print Page are thoughtful enough to be scary. This goes a long way in a film where characters constantly explain why and how supernatural Like 21 happenings occur. And unlike its predecessor, this sequel doesn't overuse jump scares and loud noises. For better and worse, 0 screenwriter Leigh Whannell has brought the same klutzy ambition to the "Insidious" films that he did to the first three "Saw" movies (Whannell did not script "Saw"s 4-7, though he did co-write "Chapter Two"'s story with Wan). His ideas for "Insidious: Tweet 6 Chapter 2" are spectacularly misconceived, but they're also the main reason why the movie isn't that bad. "Insidious: Chapter 2" starts where the last film left off. The Lambert family is still haunted. The body of Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) is possessed by the spirit of a mysterious bride in black, and his wife Renai (Rose Byrne) doesn't know it—I mean, she should know it, after looking at a ghost-revealing photograph taken by Elise (Lin Shaye), a dead medium, but Renai is presumably not in her right mind after seeing this photo.Elise previously warned Renai that moving is pointless since her son is haunted, not the Lamberts' home, but Renai and not-Josh move back into Josh's childhood home anyway—which is also odd since Renai is told, both in the last film and "Chapter 2," that Josh was also haunted as a child.

Assembling Ghostly Voices: Music, Temporality, and Memory in The Conjuring (2013) Rachel May Golden George Lipsitz has commented upon a variety of complexities at work in the dialogues among cultural forms and historical memory. Among his observations, he notes that American cultural expressions, “speak to both residual memories of the past and emergent hopes for the future…. [employing] collective popular memory and the reworking of tradition.”1 This notion is apt for films revolving around ghosts, whose narratives disrupt the present time with the “spectral temporality of haunting,” renegotiating boundaries between nowness and history.2 Ghost stories and horror films typically invoke memories of the past and manifestations of the transgressive or immaterial. James Wan’s film The Conjuring (2013) intriguingly explores these themes, with striking use of music and sound, especially to realize audibly otherworldly elements of the film that are visually imperceptible or inexpressible. The film is based on a purportedly true piece of New-England history--the haunting of the Perron family during the 1970s in their newly purchased home in Rhode Island, and the investigation of the case by real-life psychic researchers Ed (1926-2006) and Lorraine Warren (b. 1927). Their investigations uncover the spirit of a nineteenth-century witch Bathsheba, who has cursed all subsequent occupants of the house. Bathsheba gradually occupies the body of the mother, Carolyn, aiming to compel her to murder her own daughters. Meanwhile, the soundtrack introduces numerous temporal markers that complicate this ostensibly 1970s real-life narrative. American 1950s and 60s pop tunes play diagetically as emblems of nostalgia, with Betsy Brye’s “Sleep Walk” (1959) addressing Carolyn’s spectral possession.

“Madness” As the Driving Force Behind the Monstrous in the Insidious Film Series
Outskirts Vol. 35, 2016, 1-20 Female “madness” as the driving force behind the monstrous in the Insidious film series Maja Pandzic This article offers a feminist reading of the Insidious film series through identifying the links between the monstrous and the female characters in the narrative. In reading the monstrous as the product of the anxious heroine, I draw upon Barbara Creed’s understanding of the “abject” and classify it as that which strives to destabilize the system of traditional gender roles confining female protagonists. I also maintain that the home in the films is presented as the primary site of horror because it is in fact the location of heroines’ imprisonment; of their false attachment, as the home in our society is principally a place concealing patriarchal power relations. By drawing upon Jane Ussher’s research on disorders I underscore anxiety in women as a social construct and a reasonable response to their repressive lives in patriarchal society. The anxiety of female protagonists is the result both of being overburdened with domestic/maternal duties and their inability to attain self-fulfilment. I propose the reading of the monstrous in the films as the combination of two strategies of resistance Ussher claims are central to battling this socially constructed/contracted “madness”. Firstly, it represents the rejection of idealized femininity. Secondly, it is a product of engagement in creativity, through which the heroine voices her distress. By thoroughly analyzing the experiences of female characters—a mother of three (Renai), two single mothers (Lorraine, Michelle) and a teenage girl (Quinn)—I not only trace the emergence of the monstrous to the climax of their anxiety but show that the demons with whom they share numerous similarities, are in fact disrupting the traditional family, punishing or forcing male protagonists to accept a share of domestic and parental duties, and thus improving the status of female characters.

Horror Tropes and Magic in the Age of Goethe Jack Mourouzis GERM 61: The Age of Goethe March 9, 2018 The novels of the Goethezeit incorporate a wide variety of themes, motifs, and tropes. Most notably, these novels – particularly those that draw upon more Romantic and fantastical elements, such as Ludwig Tieck’s der blonde Eckbert and E. T. A. Hoffmann’s der goldne Topf. These novellas in particular serve as an interesting reference point due to the prevalence of magical elements within the works, which contributes to an overall feeling of uncanniness and, ultimately, the appearance of the fantastic. These magical elements also serve as a clear foundation for common tropes found in modern horror stories, with these ideas stretching even into the 21st Century canon of fantasy and horror. In this investigation, I have decided to include five works – representative of five significantly different types of stories – that feature one or more of these three major tropes. Two of these works – der goldne Topf and der blonde Eckbert – were featured in the GERM 61 course, and represent the age of Goethe, Romanticism, the German Novella, and the concept of a Kunstmärchen. The other three works are representative of modern horror, and span the entirety of the genre’s lifespan, from the 1980s to the modern day. Each of them involves one of the major tropes that played a major role in both of the works of the Goethezeit. The first of the modern horror stories is Stephen King’s It. Based off a novel that was initially released in 1986, the 2017 film proved to be one of the most critically and financially successful horror films of all time.1 The story revolves around: the self-titled Losers’ Club, seven kids in their young teens… dealing with life in the small town of Derry.
