X-Men, Dragon Age, and Religion: Representations of Religion and the Religious in Comic Books, Video Games, and Their Related Media An Honors Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in International Studies. By Lyndsey Erin Shelton Under the mentorship of Dr. Darin H. Van Tassell ABSTRACT It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games.

  • THE DRINK TANK 399 1 the DRINK TANK 399 Editors - Vanessa, James, Chris
THE DRINK TANK 399 1 THE DRINK TANK 399 Editors - Vanessa, James, Chris The Second-to-Last issue of This Fine Fanzine Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shushter and first appeared in the fanzine Science Fiction issue 3, then first in regular comics in Action Comics #1. He’s been the backbone of DC Comics since 1938. For years and years, whenever a new comic was introduced, either Superman or Batman was used in the first issue of the new comic to help get them over. He has died once, killed by Doomsday, and has been re-invented more than a few times. 1 SUPERMAN VS. CAPTAIN MARVEL From Kingdom Come by Alex Ross When Vanessa asked to me marry her, she gave me a Superman ring. She said that I was her Superman. They say that men want to be Batman, but I was never, ever happier to be Superman! This issue is dedicated to Superman, of course. I grew up loving Plastic Man and The Flash, and Captain Marvel (who I always called Shazam, only to be corrected, but who is now called Shazam!), but Superman was, well, Superman. He could be a boring fuddyduddy, while Batman was always cool and anti-establishment, SUperman always played by the rules. Still, there is something magical about Superman that has allowed him to be re- imagined so often. The best of the Superman Elseworld’s were almost as good as those dedicated to Batman, and things like Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow were equally awesome.

Movies. Out in the real world flowers are blooming, the howling winds of winter are settling into the balmy breezes of spring. And life is underway in all its astonishing and terrifying and terrible and glorious connections and manifestations. Life. In the darkness of the theatre no real flowers bloom, and what winds howl howl only on recording tape. In the theatre Humphrey Bogart and Jack Nicholson share the same degree of life. And art is underway in all its astonishing and terrifying and terrible and glorious connections and manifestations. ■ Recently I was asked, "How do you get over it? I sleep a lot and read." ’’It"! a shattered love, an ugly turn. A connection and a manifestation of life at its most terrifying...a punch one can roll with and which one does roll with because one has to roll with it."How do you get over it?" I was asked * I smiled. "I suffer." Baloney; I do that anyway. What do I do to distract myself from the ache of a temporarily gutted life? I read poetry (Plath, Dickinsen, Yeats, Spenser, Joyce, Shakespeare). I go on long walks.. I go on trips (hi, Charlotte!). I go to the movies. Where the surprises of life make thematic sense. Where every story worthy of the name has a resolution,' an ending. Life -- the thing out there, rearing and grinding and growing and glowing right on along -- is not drama; its forms' are incomprehensible and baffling and painful. Here in the universe of pseudolife hurled upon a stationary screen the questions life itself cannot, will not answer are answered.
