Norway-AdvenTURes is a young company aiming to offer the ultimate natural experience in Norway for all kinds of people. Norway-AdvenTURes was started because they discovered the magnificent multitude of natural resources available in this coastal area with glaciers, mountains, fjords, cliffs, islands and the sea. 26 Storm photography on the Nordfjord coast

‘Storm at Stad’ is a very familiar expression in Norway, but photographing storms is about more than just standing outdoors in the middle of tempestuous weather with gusting winds and an angry ocean. Outer Nordfjord carries many traces of the forces of nature; the wind and weather have left visible marks on the landscape. Thomas Bickhardt attends to the professional content of the course: finding traces of storms to photograph, lectures and various equipment.

Course leader Thomas Bickhardt has photographed storms and the landscape in Nordfjord for several years, and he has published the books ‘Storm ved Stad’ (Storm at Stad) (2007) and ‘Panorama Nordfjord’ (2009). The course concentrates on dramatic composition, and how to tell the story of a storm using different angles, lenses and cropping. See also bickfoto.no for more information about Thomas Bickhardt.

27 Coastal walks Mt. Hornelen and Kråkenes Lighthouse

Legend has it that every year on midsummer night witches gather here on Europe’s highest sea cliff, which towers 860 metres above the sea. Thus you could argue that Mt. Hornelen is also one of Norway’s oldest ‘congress’ centres (since the witches’ gathering sounds not unlike an AGM). Ever since the first people settled along the Norwegian coast, superstition has clung to this fascinating and unusual mountain, and it has always been a landmark for seafarers. Today, Hornelen is a popular destination for walkers and climbers.

Friday: 19.00 Check-in at the Torget Hotel, welcome drink in Kraftstasjonen Restaurant. Dinner. Evening stroll through Måløy and a sociable get-together.

28 Sea kayaking

Our kayaks glide silently through the crystal-clear water. We take in the fantastic surroundings. The clear water gives us a great view of the fish and plants beneath us. Birds perched on rocks, steep cliffs and mountainsides, the odd cave and the open sea to the west. Two sea eagles circle high overhead. When the tide is with us, the paddling is almost effortless. Halfway up the fjord, there is an island where we eat our packed lunch directly beneath Mt. Hornelen’s dizzyingly steep cliff (860 metres). After lunch, we continue westwards. The fjord becomes wider and wider, and the swell tells us that we have almost reached the open sea. After a few hours, we glide into a bay with turquoise water and a white sandy beach surrounded by steep, green cliffs. We feel almost like Robinson Crusoe in this exotic place, just below the Arctic Circle, sitting around a campfire savouring the midnight sun.
