The aim is to focus on mutually identified relevant areas and to implement it in co-ownership, in order to increase the productivity, quality and impact of the participating institutions both in Finland and in Southern Africa. A central collaboration partner for the network is the Southern African-Nordic Centre SANORD.     Finland’s success hinges on skills – The next government will hold the fate of the country in its hands A high level of skills and their flexible development are the key strengths upon which Finland’s future welfare is built. That is why investment in education, research and innovation must become strategic focus areas for the next government. The only guarantee of Finland’s future success is ensuring the provision of sufficient funding for higher education institutions, research and skills. Universities and universities of applied sciences have committed to carrying out their significant societal duties, flexibly developing their operations to meet the needs of society. The successful execution of their mission also in the future requires improved guarantees for the stability, predictability and sufficiency of their core funding. We need a long-term strategy for a scientific policy and an innovation policy that serve both the research and higher education sphere as well as the business sector in a sustainable manner. Funding allocated to education and research must be considered an investment that will secure our continued success. Innovations and research that will lay a foundation for our welfare and growth for decades – even centuries – are being conducted right now. Finland cannot thrive without unrestricted top-level basic research, state-of-the-art applied research and interaction between academic communities and society. From the perspective of fostering employment and economic growth, other central factors include improving the level of education, as well as developing models and funding for life-long education. A highly educated workforce, products with high added value and attractive competence clusters draw more international experts, investments and businesses to Finland.

    Nordic ESPAnet workshop for doctoral students and early career researchers Social Citizenship, Solidarity and Sustainability – The changing landscape of welfare in the Nordic countries 10 December 2020, Online (Zoom), Oslo/Brussels time zone Ongoing changes in the Nordic welfare states call for new understanding of social citizenship and solidarity among citizens, communities and societies, as well as social and citizens groups. The Nordic countries are faced with unprecedented structural transformations in the labour market under the fourth industrial revolution (digitalisation, robotisation, automatisation) and stronger global interdependencies (immigration, transnational enterprises, off-shoring of production). Demographic ageing and climate change have intensified discussions on how to bring about social justice in an ecologically and financially sustainable manner. New social movements have mobilised for recognition of their demands and a right to representation in the deliberation of welfare policies. Shifting balances in power between the EU, national, regional and local level of governance have changed how welfare policies are deliberated and implemented. However, the effects are asymmetrical in terms of who has benefitted from these changes and where these processes have increased social inequalities. Nordic welfare states have been unequally affected by such processes of change and also responded differently to them. The second goal of the study is to create a model of the causes of discrimination against men. According to the model, which synthesizes administrative sciences, gender studies and memetics, gender discrimination is caused by a mental diff erentiation between men and women. This diff erentiation tends to lead to the segregation of societies into masculine and feminine activities, and to organizations and net- works which are dominated by either men or by women.
