Neumann University News One Neumann Drive, Aston, PA 19014-1298 For Immediate Release – October 24, 2018 Contact: Stephen Bell 610-558-5549 AFCU Appoints Executive Director for Mission The Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities (AFCU) has appointed Debi Haug as its executive director for mission. She will be based at Neumann University (Aston, Pennsylvania), one of 24 colleges that are members of the organization. Haug has 18 years of experience in Catholic ministry, including campus minister at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon; campus minister and wedding coordinator at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame; campus minister for Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina; and campus minister at Ball State University Newman Center and University Parish at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana; She has also served at parishes in Portland, Oregon and South Bend, Indiana. After graduating with a BA in Pastoral Leadership from Marian University, a Franciscan institution in Indianapolis, Indiana, Haug served as a youth minister for the Jesuit Retreat Program in Milford, Ohio. Her post-graduate education includes courses in Theological Studies at St. Meinrad School of Theology in Indiana and current matriculation in a Certificate in Franciscan Studies at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. Her roots in Franciscan education extend back to elementary school, where she was taught by the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, the same congregation that now leads the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana. “I feel honored to have been chosen,” says Haug, “and am eager to collaborate with the Board of the AFCU to enhance the mission effectiveness of the organization and its member colleges and universities.” The executive director for mission works with the AFCU leadership to set mission- related priorities for the organization and offer services that will support mission programs to member institutions. -

The district is comprised almost entirely of single-family dwellings. A large proportion of the district’s residents are well educated with a strong commitment to our students and their education. One of the largest IBM Corporation facilities in the country is located within the district. Vassar College, Marist College and Dutchess Community College (DCC) are located within 10 miles of the high school. SCHOOL Spackenkill High School is a four year public high school offering a strong college preparation program. Vocational programs are offered through Dutchess County BOCES Career and Technical Institute. Fourteen Advanced Placement courses are offered throughout the year. The school population is 502 with over 60 faculty members. Russell Sage College: The Journey Toward Thriving Abstract In partnership with Russell Sage College (RSC), the following service-learning project outlines our situation analysis, literature review and application plan to implement strategies and resources to enable RSC’s strategic initiative toward becoming a college known for well-being through an initiative called Thrive@Russell Sage. Leveraging research in Positive Psychology, and best practices from other colleges and universities, our team developed a Thrive “playbook” designed to support RSC’s ability to 1) communicate and engage the RSC community 2) expand Thrive through the curriculum beginning with RSC 101, an introductory freshmen course and 3) enhance and expand Thrive through appreciative inquiry. We suggest measuring Thrive@Russell Sage impact through an annual well-being survey of students and faculty and use survey data as input to evolve their strategic plan. -

News and Notes October 2014 OHIO NORTHERN JOINS NAC&U Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio, recently joined The New American Colleges and Universities (NAC&U), bringing the total number of members to 23. Read more about Ohio Northern and what impact NAC&U president Nancy Hensel hopes it will have. STEM Grants, Awards, Outreach throughout NAC&U The Hampton University First in the World Partnership (HU-FITWP) was awarded a $3.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase the access to and affordability of a university education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines (STEM) for underrepresented, and or low-income students. Read more. Westminster College computer science professor Dr. Helen Hu received the Education Excellence Award at the 2014 Women in Tech Awards. Dr. Hu was awarded a three-year $800,000 National Science Foundation grant to improve computer science education in Utah high schools. Through the NSF grant, Hu introduced a new high school course "Exploring Computer Science" to over 50 Utah schools. The program already has better gender equity than any other Utah high school computer science course. Read more. The University of Evansville was only one of only six colleges to receive a 2014 National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Award for Connecting Professional Practice and Education. For their entry, UE's civil engineering senior design team worked with faculty, residents of Fairfield, Illinois, and licensed professional engineers on the Fairfield Reservoir and Dam project in Fairfield. Read more. Three Manhattan College students and their professional mentor traveled to the village of Mbirbua in Cameroon on the first of five trips to build a bridge for the community.
